This is interesting. I hadn't heard much about the TomTom app but was seriously considering buying it. Sounds like I'm going to have to let it be tested before paying the big bucks. I must say I'm surprised no text-to-speech. That's why we'd buy the app.

I think you're confusing turn-by-turn directions with text-to-speech. Text-to-speech isn't important to a large number of people. They just want it to say turn left or right at a particular time, not necessarily the street name.

And you make this ridiculous statement based upon....?

There have been a significant number of people who have commented on this very subject in the many topics already running on the GPS variations available or coming who have said they don't care whatsoever if it reads the street names as long as it gives the left/right/etc in X distance instructions. Considering you have only made 4 posts in threads related to GPS (3 here and 1 otherwise) I suggest you actually go back and read all the threads that have spoken of text-to-speech thoroughly. This has been discussed quite a bit and there are many comments out there.

Hardware manufacturers make GPS receivers with and without text-to-speech. Some people don't deem it important. While I prefer it that has no bearing on what someone else wants. Some people find it an annoyance because of the bad pronunciation. It's just a feature, it's not a requirement.

Saying text to speech isn't important to a large number of people is ridiculous. You basically just proved my point, that you have no empirical basis. Macrumors hardly signifies any meaningful number of total iphone owners.

I can just as easily say "a large number" of people do prefer TTS.

So I just want to make sure I have this right.

TomTom App will not have "turn right at Fowler Ave, in 200 ft" It'll just say, "Turn right in 200 ft." (or similar wording.)

What is lane guidance?

Do all these apps give you average MPH and other smaller goodies?

Personally, i'd rather it said, "Watch for speed trap before Fowler Ave exit 200ft ahead". Thankfully that guy one lane over didn't slow down when i did and got both those Sheriff's after him :p (SB on the 275).

Of course, I figured out on the 2nd trip thru there where the speed limit was posted and was going 60 instead of still going 75! LOL!!

My Nav unit just does major highways for names, the screen is big enough to read the street name if i need it. With the way roads are all torn up around "here", i'm more worried about the exit even being in the same spot as the map says (Tampa is really bad on my maps, but they are 4yo - except friends had the same problem with newer maps too, just too much construction in these parts).

Um, yeah. Head on out to do a door-to-door poll on your opinion. Get back to me when you're done with that. I'll be waiting. Really. I will.

You mean like how macrumors represents a large share of iPhone owners and thus can be used to make your claim? Context clues.;)

You're the one who used that big word empirical. Now you have the responsibility to prove that people DO require text-to-speech. Oh, damn. Your mom called and said you were supposed to be in before dark. You'd better get home.

Text to speech is important.

If the GPS says "Turn left in 100 feet" then you have to take your eyes off the road to see what street you need to turn left on to. It may not be so terrible if you're in the middle of nowhere and there's only one street within the next mile you can go left on, but if you're in a city, there are going to be several streets coming up on your left. If it says "Turn left on Main Street in 100 feet" then you don't have to take your eyes off the road to see what street to turn on to.

My GPS does TTS and I would not buy one that doesn't do it. It's more than a convenience. It's a safety feature.

To play devil's advocate, is it not reasonable that one might just take a cursory look of their route before they take it? So in most cases you might already have a general idea of things like street names? Or are we going to get to the point where we are just auto-piloting around doing whatever a GPS tells us, resulting in us and Dwigt driving our rental car into the lake?

Regardless of whether people think tts is important or not.

It's still pretty lame that tomtom will not include it. Expecially if they plan to charge $100 for this app (speculation), at this price I would expect this feature to be present.

Text to Speech is definitely important for this kind of app.

But I still consider it Text to Speech even if it doesn't say street names, though that is nice to have.
