Are the Mac Pros ever coming???

While I'm sure you'll get some strangely sure-of-themselves answers as well as some rude responses to the tune of "Who cares? [insert discussion of iPads]", the answer may be a 'no'.
It's just been so long, but then again, there are some rumors to the contrary, that one is on its way.

I, too, am anxiously awaiting a new MacPro. Not that the current ones aren't fine machines, but I don't see the point of getting one of those when either we get a new one real soon, or Apple discontinues them entirely in favor if iMac and it's ilk (I hope not ...).
I have an aging G5 Quad, and while it's a fine machine (got it in 2005) and it still works fine, but since it can't run any new stuff, it's time to retire it. With mobile me going away in June, I need to get on the iCloud (and a new file sharing system to replace iDisk, and new web server to replace iWeb on Mobile me ... ). So I'll be getting something. SInce I also do video editing, I'd like a more powerful engine than iMac provides.

But is it worth it to Apple? Having a muscle Mac in its lineup used to be important to Apple when it had to battle for attention against Windows PCs, but its not necessary anymore. If Apple doesnt make an announcement in the upcoming weeks, we may have our answer.

I don't think we have an answer until Apple discontinues it.
Apple's not going to mess around and keep something in the store that uses an outdated CPU that's probably going to run low on stock.
If they don't like it, they'll kill it. If they're working on an update, it'll stay in the store.
I think if they were going to dump the Mac Pro this round, they would have issued a discontinuation notice by now like they did with the XServe. That they haven't yet is sort of telling.
The Mac Pro still being on the front page is also telling. Both the XServe and the Macbook moved off the front page about a year before their final discontinuation.
I'm hoping my super-awesome updated-by-me Mac Pro will last me past the next 6,1 update and into a 7,1 update, if there are such things.

I hope that I'm right. My analogy is this: imagine a diner. They are famous for their fried chicken platter; at $6.99 it can't be beat, and they sell over 200 of them every day and 400 on Saturdays. But they also sell a $34.99 surf & turf. They only sell about two of those a day. But they have a few dozen regulars who come in just for that. It's worth keeping those regulars, and they also bring family and friends. As long as the diner's cooler isn't crammed too full of stuff that is more profitable, it's no sweat off the owner's nose to keep some filets and lobster tails on hand. I know this is oversimplified and that maintaining the MP line is a wee bit more involved than keeping animal parts in a cooler...
.. but please may I be right!
(If not, then when that becomes clear, I'll be stockpiling the fastest MPs I can put together from refurbs, CPUs etc....)

Exactly. Look at the facts before getting worked up. The HP workstations that will be based on the E5 won't ship until April, and the E5s themselves weren't even released until a few days ago...in the middle of the iPad 3 launch/shipping frenzy.
Apple just announced the "New iPad" on March 7th, which they will be officially releasing, officially selling, and officially delivering at the official launch on this Friday, March 16th.
I am in serious doubt that Apple will immediately announce or release a new Mac Pro, or any Mac computer for that matter in the period following this major product launch. Apple normally waits at least a month to a month and a half between each major product announcement, and they will be busy promoting, marketing, and selling these "New iPads" for the next few weeks while the iPad hype is still strong and in everybody's minds. Apple does not want to "taint the waters" or divert the focus from the "New iPad" which is the current focus of product sales for the time being.
With that said, I think we may be looking at late April/May right now before we see new Mac (or Mac Pro) announcements. That would indeed put everything around 600 days.

I don't think that's it at all.
Apple won't announce until they can ship at least one version in volume. Otherwise they've killed sales of the old Mac Pro completely and can't ship anyone a new one, thus turning the Mac Pro in a zero profit line for a month or two. Nothing to do with the iPad.
There will be no announcement until they can ship one version, and considering no one else is shipping until April/May, the Mac Pro announcement will likely be in April/May.
In other words: People need to cool it.
They've never been verbal on updates.
You could just look at shipping parts rather than starting another thread. The last of the cpus just started shipping. Appropriate gpus are released and about to start shipping assuming they go with solely AMD options. NVidia would be a bit longer, but given how long it's been already, I imagine they would want all options in place given that Apple doesn't do minor updates or spec bumps. If anything was coming in that regard, it would have been last year anyway.
These analogies don't convert well to computers
. The 7980 makes sense in such a machine as it fits with their typical options (although a Firepro option with full driver features would be nice). People are obviously stressed because an extended refresh has them holding a particular machine longer than they anticipated, and possibly through several generations of software. Then of course no one wants to buy a machine late in a development cycle, not that I blame them. I could have seen Apple wanting to get an update out quickly if it was feasible late last year to address year end IT budgets, but at this point they're not yet behind the other oems comparing comparable lines.
But this uncertainty is very frustrating.
My mac pro 1.1 is pimped to the max with RAM and disk space, and in urgent need of upgrade, but I would be crazy to do it now. I am seriously looking at other platforms which deliver way more sheer compute power at a fraction of the price. Apple may not worry about the sale of 1 mac pro, but that machine sits at the heart of a small video production company employing 4 people all of whom use macbook, ipads and iphones simply because it is a mac-based business.
If the primary machine was changed, they would quickly drift away. I imagine that pattern is repeated all over the place.

Why? All it would do is further tank sales of the existing Mac Pro.
They won't say anything until they have something to ship.
If they were going to cancel the Mac Pro, chances are good they already would have announced it's cancelation, so if that's what you're looking for them to clarify... No news is good news.
(Besides, if/when they cancel the Mac Pro, they'll stay on sale for a limited time after the announcement, so you'll have time to snatch one up. They won't just disappear from the store one day.)
