I came across this video, basically describing all the issues the vlogger has with his new MacBook M1.
In short, the problems are:
Slow down and loss of sound in FCP and having to restart
Mac screen would go blank
Ethernet speed is inconsistent with Finder
Slow external SSD
Only able to get 30Hz with an external display with Thunderbolt
Display won't turn back on after sleep
Mine is coming next month, would love to hear how the early adopters' experience.

I think he may have had a lemon. The performance reviews from a lot of other youtubers have been vastly different.

The 30hz issue I had to override the display refresh holding option while clicking in display. I don't run that display at 4k on the intel macs I have. This was nothing different.

I haven't seen any of those issues. I have had mine since Saturday.

Just saw this video... it felt like he was prying for things to be negative over. I was like pass... he should definitely exchange and see if he has the same issues but legit I'm on the 8gb MBP and have not had any issues. My Mini did have a slight video issue with Teams but exciting and coming back in fixed that, so I imagine the software will get better once they optimize for Silicon.

Well a friend just sent me notice that people are reporting issues with Logitech MX BT keyboards. It might be a application issue on Logitech’s side. On the other hand I ran that keyboard on my 2015 12” Macbook with a late Big Sur Beta. So, is Apple hardware contributing to the issue. Anyone out there running the MX Keyboard with a MacMini? Is it working?

I haven't experienced any of these. The only problem I have had is insane battery life and it's too fast.

the issues he is describing seem to be purely either a lemon or OS/software specific. if this was hardware specific it would have been consistent

remember that the M1 chipset has the same instruction sets and hardware levels among all the laptops so the issue would duplicate among all devices not just 1 or a few, if it is a few its either a lemon device or a software specific issue

examples of REAL hardware issues:

Bendgate
iPhone 4: you are holding it wrong
Macbook 2016-2019 Keyboards

Mine just woke up while connected to my monitor and the built-in screen stays dark and, according to system preferences, isn't even connected. Little weird. Other than that, I'm very impressed with Apple Silicon.

On my side I haven’t found any big issues. A couple of the problems in that video could be his own user error.

Example, how much RAM does his M1 have and how big was the file I tried to transfer or bench? Files are sent to RAM before they are sent to an external drive. If a file is bigger than available memory then transfer rates can be hit by CPU overhead.

Anyone who rants about the M1 Mac being problematic, without specifying things like the specs of their machine, what apps/drivers/software they installed, etc. may be just shoving bulldonkey in our face. I'd be leery.

Remember, drivers can cause more problems that apps can. Case in point: My Asus ROG Zephyrus G laptop. I downloaded a driver for my 512Gb Intel 660 SSD from iobit's Driver Booster. Never had an issue with driver downloads/installs before. Not a thing.

Suddenly, my Asus would NOT stop rebooting at the Republic of Gamers splash screen! From perfectly working, to a bricked laptop with 1 set of driver updates... except I didn't know WHAT was causing it at the time! I just knew it was an update of something I'd just done. Oh, the troubleshooting I had to do.

Come to find out, if I downloaded/installed the INTEL version of that same driver (downloaded from Intel), there was no problem! Worked great! So I'm a bit leery of iobit's Driver Booster now... at least when it looks like something involving my SSD or keyboard (another issues I was having where my keyboard stopped working; an external USB keyboard worked fine).

So, when it comes to Macs (or PC's/Windows), be careful what you do and keep track of what you do... it can save you a lot of headaches or at least explain what is causing them. ;)

I've had an issue where using wireless SideCar and my 2018 iPP would result in WIFI disconnect completely - even though the iPad remained connected (happened twice now). Pretty bad bug, but hopefully just that, a bug that can be sorted out quickly. Other than that, I had the M1 MBA reboot once when I was trying to use it with an off brand external portable monitor via USB-C cable; but I even had that issue with every Dell laptop I tried too, so I think they must be using some bad Chinese chips in there somewhere for the USB-C connection to the monitor.

Happened again just now - basically after an hour or so. I will no longer be connected to my home WIFI, but remain wireless connected to my iPad Pro for display. Weird bug!

I liked Youtube better before Google ruined it. It really WAS just a video sharing platform for the love of it and for sharing knowledge.

Well... after 10h using my new Apple Silicon MacBook Pro 16GB/1TB, I really have to say, in more than 10 years no Mac disappointing me more. Yeah, of course it's fast, the battery life is awesome, to run iOS Apps is a funny feature. But there are a few things which really sucks and nobody told before.

If you are a user of SwitchResX to create custom screen resolutions, in my point 1920x1200HiDPI which I used since 2013, Apple does not allow this anymore. Yeah, I know - it was unsupported before, but there was a way to do it. Now Apple says "Nope, you dumb user, you spend over 2 grand and we like to force you to our preferred ways..." I mean, wtf?! Why I can use 2560x1600, but can't use 1920x1200 anymore. There is no really good reason for it and Graig told in an interview you're still allowed to tweak your system, which you've paid a lot. This is the point why I hate the device the most. All my joy about this new MacBook was completely destroyed. As if it wasn't enough that with the MacBook Pro you finally have to live with the, for a developer, useless touch bar.

EDIT: I mean the internal display!
EDIT 2: Also they deleted the iMac Pro wallpaper, which I used for years. Happy a friend gave me his Wallpapers folder from macOS Catalina...

Another point is, if you do not want features like SIP and/or Gatekeeper, you wont be able to use iOS Apps. Fair enough, another user in another thread told it could be because of piracy protection - okay, got it.

Sometimes bigger Apps e.g. Keynote takes about an half hour to install over AppStore. The download is pretty fast. With my 250MBit DSL connection I get 32MB/s down, but then the App stuck at "Installing" for a loooong, loooong time. Even my 2017 MBP base with an i5 does it quicker. Yes, it could be a temporary thing, but come on...

For me, I really don't know if I'll keep this device. At the moment it just feels wrong. Recently I had this feeling when my company forced me to use a Thinkpad with Windows. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Apple fanboy, I only use Apple devices for decades now, I missionize everyone I know to buy the iPhone instead of the crappy Android phone, the iPad instead of the Lenovo tablet etc. etc. Now seems to be the time when I start doubting my own preaching.

Why do I see these things, which are actually little things, so doggedly? Well, this is the first device with Apple's own CPU and besides temporary incompatibilities there are massive restrictions for the user, for his personal taste and everything has to be as Apple wants it to be - even more than before. I am afraid of the future of the Mac, the Mac that will probably be just an iPad with a keyboard... ?

Please Apple, please - please give us back a little bit of self-determination...

You can click scale while holding option key. Check show low resolution modes. Not sure if that is enough options, but that should open a lot more choices.
