My Macbook has never "Moo'd" or "Whined". This thread is insane. Could that many units really be making that much of an offensive noise for people to complain about it? Think about all the problems in the world for a second, then think about your Mooing computer and see how you feel. Disgusting! :p

The only noise I've ever really noticed is when I use the thing heavily and the fan comes on to cool the cpu.

Posts like these piss me off. If you have nothing to contribute then don't say anything, instead of patronizing everyone who has macbooks with problems. If you spend $1200 on a computer it doesn't help to think of the starving children in Africa. Just because YOU have a fully functional macbook doesn't mean that everyone else does as well. Check out this recording of the moo and tell me whether you'd take it to the study hall: http://www.theflowershoprecordings.com/moo.mp3

And posts like that piss me off. The thread was asking whether there were people that had computers that didn't whine or moo, and so far everyone who has replied that theirs doesn't has been insulted from every side. And he's right, a noise your computer makes, as long as it functions properly (which I've never seen any of these noises linked to improper behavior, except the rare few who actually have overheating from bad fans), is not a problem you should be worried about.

Just got my MacBook Pro (week 22)... No "Moo" and no "whine".. I've listened quite closely, and nothing.. Actually, this sucker is extremely quiet. The only noise I ever hear is the spinning of the DVD drive..

In my case I can hear moo and whine when the Macbook is running off the AC adapter... How much do you think a grounded outlet vs one that is not grounded affect the noise if any? Mine is not grounded. And in my experience it is the whine that is annoying to the point that I can get a headache. The moo is no problem at all. However if there is a slight noise in the room like I talking to someone or the TV being ON then I can almost not hear the whine either. It can be a problem in a dead silent library though... I doubt it is any problem in an airplane as there is a constant moo sound there anyway.

Post 1 complaining about Post 2, which is complaining about Post 3, which is complaining about the thread that all of these posts are on. Crazy :)

Wait a second.. is this the moo sound you guys are complaining about? This is just the fan spinning up and down.. Rarely happens in my case as I dont push the computer that hard.

I can personally here the high pitched sound, the same kind of noise you hear when a coil shakes very fast in a an electronic device like a computer.

Ok just because about 50% of the people who participated in the poll of whos Macbook Moos said that theirs does Moo, dosnt mean that ALL Macbooks are defective.

For one, only half of the ones on this site do, and another, those people are the people on this site who actually own a macbook (not everyone) and also just the people who decided to participate.

Saying someone is deaf just because they say theirs doesnt moo is completely rediculous.

Saying someone is an idiot just because they said that is also rediculous.

Not all Macbooks are created equal. Obviously.

So to review... Not all Macbooks are created equal.

Not ALL Macbooks are created EQUAL.

There is no way that anyone can dispute that, but now that ive said it, i might want to put on a firesuit.

Mine doesn't seem to moo or whine...

But this 512MB of RAM is killing me! I usually only have between 7MB and 5MB of free RAM...

Actually, I just reread his post, and I realise I misunderstood him. I thought he was saying that it was insane to have a thread like this cause people are crazy and the sounds aren't really any problems. My bad.

I suspect the OP has accidentally installed the mosquito as a background sound on his MacBook. ;-)

On a more serious note, anyone with a decent microphone and an oscilloscope or even just some shareware sampling software could verify if this whine is there whether they can hear it on not.

BTW, I am 43 and I can still hear the mosquito and those damn whining TVs. 10 years in a metal band didn't wreck my hearing after all ;-)

I really wonder if when Leapord comes out if the buzzing/whining/chirping sounds will die off for good. It seems like ever since Tiger showed up on the scene, macs started making strange noises. I remember having a PM G5 dual 1.8 that was slient (besides the fans) when it was running Panther. When I put Tiger on the system it started chirping like crazy!

Now that all these Intel machinse are out with dual cores it seems the problem continues on with us. It seems strange that the buzzing does not exist in windows and that the G5 chirping did not exist in Panther for many people. Also, the solution between making the G5 quiet and the Intel mahines quiet is very similar... place a load on the CPU to keep a core/CPU from idling. Has anyone else noticed this connection?

Mine has developed a very soft moo under load when it's in a position where it can't cool properly (i.e., on my lap and tilted slightly backward).

When placed on a flat surface it's dead silent. I spent a full day some of my DVDs and the only thing I heard was the Superdrive spinning.

I think the heat design of the laptop is somewhat flawed - by placing the main (and only) vent on the back of the machine, they've restricted how the laptop can be positioned and still dissipate heat properly.

I still love the machine, though.

My macbook doesn't moo or whinte at all- it's dead silent. I also didn't update to the intel 1.0. My brother's macbook also didn't whine, but then he updated to intel 1.0- instant whine. Reverted back to the original install, no more whine. So there you go- don't update to intel 1.0. :)

That's what happened to me! I've been thinking about reverting back. I don't need bootcamp that bad.

How do you do it?

Thanks!!!

So swap it out for a new unit. It's a revision A. Some are going to have some issues. You might also want to consider checking your rage at the door next time. Just a thought.

He already apologized for that and said he misread the original post. Cut him some slack. =)

I was using Firmware 1.0 on my MBP and it asked for 1.0.1 when i tried to use BootCamp so i installed it. I had the whine before but after the update it became a bit different and i also noticed that it gets a bit warmer.
I tried reverting back to 1.0 but i couldn't find any way to do it. There is this installer from Apple that is supposed to reset the firmware but it only works if the installation didn't go well. How did you revert yours??

haha, mine started MOOing last night. It's not as bad as the audio posted makes it sound. I'd rather have the moo as opposed to my Tibook's woodchipper...

Just for those of you that were doubting, I'm currently idling at about 72, and working my way up through the 60's and beyond I heard not one sound from the computer (except iTunes, but I muted that several times to make sure there was no moo or whine). Not that nermal0's gonna listen anyways. My hearing must just be awful.

I suggest that we all congregate in a very large, quiet warehouse with our Macbooks and Macbook Pros and spend the afternoon strolling amongst the other laptops, listening for any 'mooing' or 'whining' coming from our companions' computers. Seriously.

I like this suggestion! Or at least - does anyone who isn't experiencing any mooing/whining live near anyone who is experiencing it? Maybe they could visit and see if we're all stone deaf/overly fussy! ;)
