I wish we it were true, but no... Apple wants to dictate to us our hardware options. This is sooo sad. And I can not understand why here on the forums there is such an objection to giving us a cheap Mac tower.

What don't you get, dwl017?

Apple should give us the option. If you don't want a cheap tower, then buy the expensive one.

We do not object to apple creating such a tower, we object to the constant whining that they have not done so.

They will not give us the option because it's not in their economic interest to do so. Basically, it would be a low-margin sale that you could upgrade with 3rd party parts and keep for years. Much better to sell you a high-margin mac pro or a low-margin imac that you will have to update sooner.

Yeah it sucks, but apple is a business, and this makes business sense.

I'm dropping my MacBook into my shredding machine as we speak!

No you're not. Stop being dramatic.

I would buy a mini tomorrow if it had 802.11n, updated graphics, and was able to take 4 gb of ram. This would not require a lot of work on the part of apple.

Agreed. If they would just make the mini a headless macbook (2.0 and 2.2, x3100, 4 GB RAM ceiling, and wireless n) it would be pretty good.

2.) Apple favors making money, not winning your heart. Apple makes products for people in very specific categories. Those users who like to "mod" a lot won't find much joy from Apple's hardware options.

It's not part of the business plan, and won't ever be -- because it isn't anywhere near as profitable. Take a look at Apple's profit margins on hardware and you'll understand why it isn't an option.

Spot on grimace. The fact of the matter is we all love macs and we are going to buy them, Apple is the only company that can give us what we want because of OS X. As long as that is the case they will use the parts they want because they make big $$$ using them.
I am ordering my first iMac tonight because I can't afford a Mac pro.
I am still 'switching' although if i used the same money on a new PC it would probably be twice as powerful. But i want a Mac. The premium is a sacrifice I have to make.

people keep complaining about no cheap mac tower.....thats what the mini is for. You can connect a hardrive if you want more space, you can get a superdrive, and you pick the peripherals for it. The newer mac minis have enough speed and ram and if you want that much more performance, than you pony up for a mac pro.

Just because it is a short tower doesnt mean its not a tower. ...."thats what she said"

the mini

The only problem I have with the mini is its crappy integrated graphics. I would happily pay an extra £150 for a dedicated GPU. If you check all the games on the mac site, they don't work on the mini. Before you all start shouting, I know its not a games machine, and thats why I have a Ps3, but it would be nice to play Eve or something once in a while.....

Other than that, It is gorgeous:)

I would still like to see a mini tower.
The main reason is multiple monitors. The mini can only drive one.
I've been in offices where everyone in the office has dual monitors.
I see 2 Apple options, neither very good.
- iMac with external monitor. The displays don't match. Looks like a patch job. Not very Apple. Two external monitors could add symmetry, but ...
- PowerMac. Perhaps too much power, but I don't think there is such a thing :D. But the computer is physically too big for the task.

So a mini that could drive two monitors would work.
Or maybe something the size of the Cube, with two DVIs.
Or Cinema displays that match the iMac.

Just my thoughts.
