And will be closer to $300 when you add the sales tax...
Nah I think airpods will likely be around £69 after tax.

The air power to me is only worth it if you have the series 3 and air pods. Even if you have just two out of 3 it won't be worth it as you can get cheap wireless chargers quite easily afterall

Cost of airpower $199+wireless charging case for AirPods $69+ sales tax = almost $300.

But the guy a few posts before me has it right too. If you own a watch or iPhone from before this latest release, the cost of wireless charging is way high.

I charge my AirPods like once a week, so going wireless isn't worth it. I have a series 2 watch I'm more than happy with, and wont be upgrading anytime soon. I do have the 8 plus, but found a cheap ($10) wireless charger I use bedside.

Perfect alignment does sound good.

I'll probably end up doing the having to align my Qi pad with my 8 and X and use my puck for AW for a while yet, but I do love Qi charging, though - saves wear on the lightning connectors and a bit of time.

And even then it becomes a stretch. I hate this game Apple has started to play as of late, announce something only to have it released almost 8 months later, and then to have "stock-outs" or "half baked stuff" (I'm looking at you HomePod.)

Have you never heard of something called the CES? Something the entire industry leverages to show off new and upcoming products. Products that are often months or years out? Some technologies never even see the light of day.

My thing is Apple talked crap about the way Samsung and other brands had wireless charging they basically called it a gimmick and said it wasn’t truly wireless charging then 3 years later released the same damn thing. That kinda pisses me off...
Well, they probably still think its a gimmick, but a flagship phone in 2018 MUST have a wireless charging ability, wether they like it or not.

I suppose it could be really useful to someone with multiple wireless devices, i.e. airpods and apple watch. I might consider it if I had either of those and found charging to be cumbersome. But I don't and $200?! That charger better physically stimulate me for that grip. I don't charge that often and my wireless charges seem to work fine without any inconvenience that I can think of.

I am very excited about the AirPower because of one aspect that I think has been over looked: the ability to charge multiple devices without having to align them on the pad.

Other multi device Qi chargers require you to place the devices on a specific space because every device needs to be aligned to its own charging coil but Apple seems to have invented a technology that allows any of three devices to be place however the user wants to place them.

That opens the door to a counter top which is Qi enabled on its entire surface so people can put their devices on it without having to worry that they haven't aligned them properly. Maybe one day we can have a Qi enabled Macbook or even iMac! (Qi supports up to 120 Watts)

Put me in the yawn category. It doesn’t really fit my needs at this time. I’d have to get a AirPods wireless charging case ontop of the 99 for the AirPower.

Maybe they could make an AirPower mat version that's large enough to have the HomePod on top of it in case you happen to have some oiled wood furniture you'd like to put it on...

;)

I'm definitely holding off on this (and also on buying AirPods) until the dust settles. After AirPower and the next iteration of AirPods with charging case are available, the reviews come out and I have time to play with them at the Apple Store I'll make a decision. Until then, I'm happy with plugging in my phone to charge it.

And I understand that but imo they should’ve offered wireless charging a long time ago or offer some sort of short distance wireless charging. Something that charges 5-15 feet away. Don’t talk bad about something then offer the same damn thing 3-4 years later. Makes no since to me. Same with how they said no one wanted big phones. Now they offer all the options on just the big phones. Resolution is better on them and dual camera lens.

Why would I want to be tethered to a mat for charging?

Technically you’re not tethered per se (Unless you use the iPhone while it’s connected to the cable). But the idea is the convenience that somebody can simultaneously charge three devices or set one device down without having to use a cable or eliminate the clutter of cables.

I am very content with my Mophie charger and will not be buying the Airpower.

ETA: Wireless charging is nice but for the price Apple will be asking its a no deal for me.

Apple has always announced new product categories way a head before launch. The iPhone was announced 6 months before for example.

For me, I continue to use and receive messages on iPhone while it's charging. I have a couple of 20,000 mAh power banks at home for charging devices while on the go. So a wireless mat becomes very restrictive.

Unless the AirPower mat is a $30 product, I'll continue to charge my Watch, and AirPods the same way as before.
