The iphone absolutely needs a UI refresh. The day can't come soon enough when it has folders, more settings, back ground processing, themeing...

For the most part it looks like we all have the same complaints. For me its just too simple. I want options! I am not used to being coddled by an OS and don't appreciate it on the iphone. I bought this to be a computer with a phone, not a phone pretending to be a computer. As we all know the iphone is capable of doing much more then Apple is willing to allow. Let the consumer make the choice to keep it simple or to allow some advanced options...

Its tempting to jailbreak...

lol. It is quite amusing to see who is using the iPhone with a PC and the old Mac purists. PC users insist on modding and theming and creating their own "personalized" mess under the guise of freedom of choice (which of course by then no longer look like a Apple product), and the long time mac users/purists who are happy to keep it simple and elegant, and are more than happy to put up with a few restrictions and quirks in the UI since they are already enjoying and appreciating the hell out of their favorite communication/entertainment device... Very amusing indeed. :)

And before some of you come back saying : "well I am a long time Mac user who wants to mod and theme my iphone", well, you are a freaky aberration of nature, so go and hide before the villagers fork you out of town. :p

Peace.

Overall, I like the iPhone UI.

Sure there are some areas that Apple could improve upon.

A couple that come to mind would be an easy way to enable autorotation or not. Another would be direct access to the network choices including BT.

I do wish they'd get rid of the ugly metal mesh on the dock. The reflective glass look of the original iPod touches was much more attractive.

Notification icons and a quick-access toolbar to turn off EDGE/3G/WiFI/etc. would basically nullify any reason to jailbreak, for me.

now this person knows what they're talking about. :)
that metal dock annoys the hell out of me.

Apple needs to change their notifications, maybe copy the Palm Pre or Android notifications. Also, they need to implement multitasking.

I know many people don't see a need for a physical design change, but that's what I'd hope for, over a UI change.

Amen... fingers crossed for something like this.

Now that would be cool, I would love something like that.

The UI though is fine, I wouldn't say no to a redesign though (unless it takes away from the usability of the device, the interface currently is so easy to use).

I do think background processes are needed though. And flash in the browser. Sick of my friend showing off stuff his Android phone can do that the iPhone can't.

Why are people getting HTC Hero when Android's overall UI sucks, and the marketplace is still not as comparable to the App Store? Well, because of its widgets and customizability, these are what people want. Android phones will definitely be widely-adopted as its marketplace get populated with more "quality" apps and phone-makers come out with UI and features that people wants. That day will come if Apple still sit back.

No, what people want is an easy to use phone. Other than a very small minority of users on forums like this people don't care about being able to customize their phones. As demonstrated by the home screens in this thread, or the mess that is Windows Mobile, people buy Apple products because they realize that most people (including themselves) don't know jack about designing a UI!!

ND, I'd love if it that was the new physical design of the next iPhone. Bigger screen but the phone size stays the same size. Also, a mate finish on the back, not this easy as hell to scratch plastic. I like the look of the chrome trim on the current phones, but that also scratches way too easily and wouldnt mind it being removed with something else.

I've been reading about all the new smart phones coming out. I have been seeing alot of the HT Hero. I don't plan on getting rid of my iphone for this phone, but I am a fan of the UI (Based on pics, not hands on). Im wondering if anyone else feels like Apple's UI is getting stale. There hasn't been a significant change since the launch of the iPhone. Im hoping these new phones make Apple step their game up a little. What does everyone else feel about it.

"Getting stale" and "not happy" are two different things. Are you just wanting a change for sake of change or "not happy"?

An easy to use phone? You mean like, say, a phone that displays the weather on the home screen instead of you having to open up a weather app? Or a phone that displays your contacts on the home screen instead of having to open up a contacts app? A phone with a WiFi/Bluetooth toggle button on the home screen instead of having to go through several menus? ;)

well, I stopped by a Sprint store today, basically to check out the phones as a friend of mine upgraded to a HTC Hero. Got to see it and the Palm Pre, ide by side with my iPhone.

My verdict? The UIs for both phones look flashy and are nice and all, but to me they aren't as intuitive and just aren't as efficient. There's flashy, which has its merits, but there's also useful. I guess I like the latter. Say want you want about the iPhone UI, but it works well, and it's just eye-catching enough without being gaudy.

If you wanna jailbreak to theme, that's your thing, and you do what what you want, but none of the things seem very useful to me. And although it's not all flashy and new, I don't need to have interface-ADHD if what I've got works well... something a phone UI really hasn't done for me before the iPhone.

qtf!!

Works fine.

iPhone leads in satisfaction for consumer, business smartphone users

However like anything there are always room for improvement, such as widgets on unlock screen. Write to apple at:

Yeah.

It's about ability to accomplish tasks, not about using your time to mess around and "theme" your UI, or hitting "start" to shut down.

=)

I think it needs a refined UI but not radically different. I think they should evolve it. Look at how Mac OS X has changed over the years. Basically the same but more refined.

I'm fine with the Jesus Phone, but I do have 4 requests:

1.) Unified Notification System

2.) Quick switching.
What I mean by this is to be able to rapidly go from one app to another. Some may call this multitasking, but I prefer a lighter route. Sort of how they handle some of the iPod controls. I realize the iPod app is running in background, but I'm wondering if Apple can do something for app devs for a "light" method of switching apps.

3.) Loosen up a bit on app approval.
Still upset with the Google Voice denial. Still *very* upset.

4.) Better dashboard/homescreen whatever you wanna call it.
There should be a customizable homescreen methodology to access our most commonly used tasks.

Beyond this, the iPhone is perfect for me. Just some tweaks like above, and I'm basically happy as a camper.

The iPhone has an excellent UI, but it could be better with more customization options such as background images and even button size. Perhaps an option to allow more icons on one page, etc. I'd also LOVE a profile button/icon because depending on where I am I keep changing the options on the phone (WiFi/BlueTooth/Silent/etc).
