Are you moving back to a desktop?

In the last few years smart phones and tablets have gained a lot of traction in the market.

I've seen a lot of my family members and friends replacing their laptops with cheap desktops and a smartphone/tablet.


How many of your are transitioning from laptops to a desktop?

Not a chance... portability. Smartphones ( or tablets, i.e., iPad, for that matter ) can't do what I need a laptop to do.

I find it interesting that people would move from a laptop to a desktop though....

I'm lying in bed right now. Kinda hard to drag a desktop all the way from my desk to my bed in a room on the opposite side of the house don't you think ?

Combine that with the fact that I'm never able to find a comfortable position to hold a tablet in, and the laptop is the clear winner (I just rest it on my lap and tilt the screen to line-up with my eyes. No need to hold it at arm's length and get tired after 2 or 3 minutes of holding something up).

+1 I have an iMac for heavy duty work, an MBP for studio stuff and an MBA for speed...My problem is a new desk to fit this all on...And I think I've found one!

I couldn't do without my mobile devices or my desktop. They compliment each other.

I gave it serious thought and very well might have if I didn't need a laptop to take tests on.

When I finish school and (if) I have a job, I suspect I would trade my current macbook pro for an iMac+Air+iPad combo. The screen real-estate of the iMac makes it a nice machine for a lot of different tasks and the Air is good for travel.

The kind of things I do while at a desk, a desktop is best for.

A laptop was an excellent compromise at the time I bought my current machine. It has served me well, but I'm glad that we have the range of devices available that we do now.

I'm debating building a desktop for my next PC. Need a new computer soon in general, but would like to have something with some gaming oompf for a decent price. I'll probably keep using my MacBook until it blows up for any portable needs.

I still think the tablet market is still too new and incomplete for my needs.

My fav combination is a high end 13" laptop and a high end smartphone. I'd rather spend more money on those two things than buy a desktop and a tablet as well...

I never moved away. And I doubt I will for many years. I have no desire to replace my laptop with a tablet as it simply doent cut it for any of the major tasks my laptop is for. Image and video editing? Nope. Gaming? Nope. Media centre? Nope. At best a tablet would be a supplement to my laptop, but I don't think I'll own one for quite some time.

EDIT: Whoops, I misread the OPs post. I consider my laptop to be my desktop, as it performs all the same functions as a reasonably priced one.

Good question. I've been using a 17" MBPs for years. Now I'm thinking of getting an iMac and just using that and an iPad. Probably not this year but maybe next.

Since I've had an iPad I rarely move the laptop around the house. I do take the MBP on business trips. If I can find a way to reliably access the iMac on the road with VNC of some sort on the iPad that might be good enough. So maybe an iPad 4 with 4G or LTE (or whatever they wind up calling it) and good software for remotely logging in and I'm good to go.

Fast WiFi on the road is too unpredictable. Sometimes you get really fast WiFi and other times it is slow as dial up. Next generation wireless is really required.

As it is I've been experimenting with taking short trips with just the iPad just to find out where it comes up short in my current work flow and what I need to do to manage that.

One thing I've found is that it is really useful to carry a large USB flash drive loaded with all the files I might want to give a customer. Yes, I could give them a link to an FTP site but often the customer doesn't have internet access (laboratory computers isolated from the internet). For the same reason, I use the thumb drive to accept large data sets I want to take home.

I kind of moved back to desktop when I got an iMac 27"; gave my MBP17" to my wife in exchange for an MBA for mobile needs. I for sure like the screen size specially with an added 24" ACD.
Now in days of Thunderbold I might would rethink and move back to laptop as I could easy get that screen size back.
Looking carefully what Ivy will bring us ...

Good point. I should also have mentioned that IF Apple were to produce a 17" MBA with an XL SSD, then I might consider the TB display. At the moment it's too expensive, and my "Dream" MBA doesn't exist anyway

Hrm it's hard to say, I actually did the opposite and transitioned from desktop to laptop. I used to be a desktop person, building computers in order to game on them with friends and old roommates. That was till I got my macbook pro in order to do graphic design work. I would switch back and forth, using my macbook for work while the desktop was mostly used for games and media.

Now, after using the mac so long, I fell in love with the osx and turned that to my primary machine. My desktop is now 8 yrs old that still has a Nvidia 7800gt lol. Works great still, but it pales to the macbook air I'm on now. I love my phone, but I don't think it'll replace my laptop . I've messed with my dad's ipad however I don't see it as a substitute for my air.

Despite often enjoying a large screen when doing my writing, portability is a priority of mine and I can't really afford to have two Macs. Thats why I stick to laptop.

I sold a Mac Pro and an iMac a few years ago and have gone strictly with MacBooks.

I have a 24" Samsung monitor and a full size aluminum keyboard that I can connect and have a desktop anytime I want.

I also have an iPad and still use that, though perhaps not to the extent I first thought I would.

I got a 13" MacBook air, but O am considering getting an old iMac. It would be mostly used as a TV.
Looking at iMac G4's and the early intel ones.

I'd imagine the MBA tells the iMac it's fat. The iMac may respond by saying the MBA is too weak. And the MBP is probably trying to break up the fight (all the while looking down on the other two for not being "pro").

I've noticed the same thing. As a result, it seems my "computing posture" has improved dramatically too.

i switched back to an iMac as my main computer a couple of years ago right before the iPad came out. Having an iPhone and iPad for when i am around the house or out of the house is perfect.

the iMac can do anything i need when i'm at home and the iPad is perfect for being out and about or being a bum around the house.
