12.9 second gen just makes whole purpose of iPad better for me. Comics. Drawing. Media viewer. The rumored iPad sounds nice but if no screen improvement then no interest. OLED or bust.

This is luxury viewing for most part. I can’t think of much Apple could do outside of oled to improve this enough to warrant an upgrade. 10.5 didn’t have same experience for me but I’d love if I could ditch iPhone (and use watch) and they put phone app on iPad.

Given in and bought a 12.9" even though I've only had the 10.5" since April. It was too small to take notes (ageing eyes and clumpy fingers) so I've passed it on to the wife. Much happier with the 12.9", not too heavy.

The 12.9 is actually only 25 grams (3%) heavier than the iPad 4 (and nobody complained about the weight at that time). The screen to body ratio of the 10.5 is only 2.5% better but the 12.9 has a 3.5% better ratio than the 9.7 iPad. The 12.9 is even 0.6 mm (8%) thinner than the iPad Air and the new iPad 2018!

The advantage of the nearly double sized gorgeous display compensates for all this easily!

And of course, it fits in one's pocket quite easily. Oh, wait, my bad. I was speaking of the iPad Mini. :(

It fits in my small messenger bag very easily. In my pocket is my iPhone that is unbeatable when it comes to mobility. :)

I'm on an air , after using a pro and stupidly giving it to my dad , i'm getting another pro as soon as they're updated

Bigger is definitely Better in iOS land .

Don’t worry if you can’t think of something, Apple will. And then you’ll “need”to have the new model. I highly doubt that you looked at the 1st gen 12.9 Pro and thought, “if only the refresh rate was 120Mhz....”;)

Maybe not quite the exact wording but I've often wished scrolling was smoother. I'd often close my eyes or focus elsewhere because the blur and screen tearing bothered me.

I still do that because I only have the Pro 12.9 at the moment so I disabled ProMotion. Gonna need to replace the smaller iPads with ProMotion first. If I leave ProMotion on, after a week of use, switching between the Pro 12.9 and Pro 9.7, the latter feels laggy.

Just tried the same with my 12.9 gen 2 and switched off ProMotion. What a difference if you are used to it! Quickly switching it back on.....

I have a 9.7 pro and my old mini 2, I had been using the mini since I changed from my ipad 2 (think it was a 2 maybe a 3) until I bought the pro, the mini is the perfect size for viewing and typing, the mini was getting sluggish and it's not got any better but no matter how fast or advanced the pro it its just too big and clumsy to use easily, the bezel-less new ipads rumoured might help but I’m not happy with the current size, the bigger ones just seem silly for my uses.

Lovely thread that lets everyone speak without the aim to claim what is best!

For me 12.9 both at home and work. Work is sometimes mobile with lectures and travel. Otherwise lots of pdf and reports to review. The latest update to Keynote with pencil support, voice recording and export to movie has made the iPad a very powerful and simple e-leaning movie maker. Screen real estate and split screen with 12.9 is great when producing e-learning movies. I find that making these movies are easier and more powerful on iOS than on MacOS due to the pencil!

For home : Web, movies, civ VI, books and some multimedia management.
Nice to see a fellow Civ VI fan on here! ;)

Huge fan of the traditional 9.7” size. It’s the one that Goldilocks would have picked. Not too big or too small. Just right. :).

It’s the perfect balance between portability and enjoyable screen size. My iPad travels with me a lot so perhaps my use case is better suited to the standard size? If it was always home I’d maybe have gone with the big one. But, for me it’s perfect.

The Pro 10.5 has the same physical dimensions so I'd chalk it down as a good "Goldilocks" size, too. Only caveat is price. :p

Mind, despite the 9.7" display size, I don't consider the original iPad - iPad 4 to be particularly mobile-friendly. Back when I had the "classic" iPads, I know I was looking forward to a retina mini. It wasn't until the slimming down and weight loss that came with the Air that 9.7 became a mobility option for me (primarily because it actually fit in my purses then).

The thing that I really appreciated about the iPad 4 was its insane battery life. I regularly experienced 13-14 hours of use on a single charge. I used it as my primary device during a very intensive boot camp. 10 hours a day, using it heavily all day, and still having plenty of battery life left for a little relaxation. Apple has since "fixed" that with subsequent iPads.

I adored the Mini for that reason, the screen and that I could type on it with one hand. I was very creative on it (as I was with my iPhone 5). I wish the battery life was still that good on the Pros, but obviously with bluetooth devices it'll drain much faster. I was happy if I got 7-8 hours on my 12.9" drawing, but the biggest battery hog was Safari on my 12.9".

For me, a mini with Pencil capabilities would be perfect, but now that I've gotten over my 12.9" flaking out, I'm not sure if I will pick up a 10.5" iPad Pro or a 2018 iPad with the trade in money (ideally, I prefer the latter and just get a Wacom-like tablet for my Mac to work on more detailed illustrations.) I know that Procreate is very RAM hungry though and too many layers with 2GB of ram causes it to crash and with my vision I could probably use the Pro's screen too. I am leaning toward the 10.5".

Whatever I pick up, I realize that for me, in regard to iPads, smaller is better because I want to use it during my downtime at work and on my commutes.

Oh, yes, absolutely. The main thing I really like with the new basic 9.7" iPads is they appear to match iPad 4 battery life. I don't have the 2018 one but with the big.LITTLE like setup, I wouldn't be surprised if it had even better battery life than the 2017 version. I like my Pro 9.7 (A9X) but it's got the shortest battery life among all iPads I've owned. I'm sure I've got a screenshot somewhere of my iPad 4's battery runtimes.

Well, as a current iPad mini user, that all depends on what Apple plans to do. If they discontinue the ipad mini, i will be forced to choose a new size iPad when i upgrade. I really want to have my next ipad be a pro ipad for heavier video & photo editing, but even if Apple does upgrade the mini, would they release a mini pro? Doubtful. Still, i travel a lot, and find the size of the mini perfect. If Apple does update the mini i could still see myself getting one along side a larger ipad pro.

I think you answered your own question. I’ll like to add “highly” doubtful to that though.

They already have the 10.5 and 12.9 Pro models, if anything I’d see them go larger compared to smaller. Apple has already provided customers with bigger phones to help with the lack of updates toward the iPad Mini.

I have the 10.5. I struggled with picking up the 12.9 but given my use case the 10.5 was perfect for me. I use mine mainly for media and surfing. But I recently took it to a conference and was able to be productive on it no problem.

Keep in mind however that the rumors suggest the next iPads will do away with the home button & bezels. Most rumors say the next pros will stay the same physical size but increase the screen size. So the current 10.5” would become an 11” something iPad and the 12.9” would theoretically become a 13.5” iPad. Not saying that’s what Apple will do, but that’s the rumor. If true, then I could totally imagine Apple coming out with a bezel-less iPad mini that would have an 8.5” screen instead of the current 7.9” one. To me that would be the perfect portable size iPad. But again, who knows what Apple will do. Perhaps they’ll only release one iPad Pro size and combine them into one 11” plus size without bezels. Who knows. Maybe they’ll do that this fall...and then release a larger iPad Pro next year like they did with the iPhone x.

To be save from all of this I got me a used 12.9 gen2 iPad again after I gave away my 12.9 gen1 to my brother hoping for a new one at WWDC. I could not live so long without my 12.9 waiting for something to come. Now they can do what they like. Maybe I wait until the next "real" improvement comes as a new OLED iPad....
