I bought the 9 inch pro today after being impressed by its display in the store. Side by side with the big pro it seemed much better in the store lighting.

After getting it home it was a different story, and I was a bit dismayed at how much True Tone altered the color. Back it goes, and I will keep my 12 inch pro as it is truly excellent.

Uh, you realize it can be turned off, right?

Sure, but I feel with True Tone off the smaller Pro display is nowhere near as good as the larger iPad.

It did look great in the store with True Tone on, but it is unlikely I would ever use it in those lighting conditions.

True Tone in the Apple Store should make effectively no difference, as the lighting in store is ~6500k, which is nearly what the iPad is calibrated to, which means True Tone isn't doing much of anything under those conditions.

used it for a while, then turned it off because it was annoying to have it change the "tint" without my discretion. the screen was warmer but I'm not accustomed to it and like the night shift mode FAR better as i can toggle it on and off. its a nice feature to have but since it hasn't been accepted through the whole lineup of macbooks/iphones/ipads it feels weird to have a tinted screen compared to my normal rmbp/ipp12.9/i6+ and so forth. honestly feel like its just a feature they brag about due to the modest upgrade of the ipad pro 9.7 as they didnt have many features that made it "pro-worthy"
this is coming from a person who owns both 12.9 ipp and a 9.7 ipp.

Now that the dust has settled, I'm curious to know how many of you are still using and enjoying the True Tone feature, and how many don't use it at all. I initially thought I liked True Tone, but got over it after a few days and personally do not feel it enhances my display viewing experience. I've turned it on a few times since then to see if my opinion has changed, but no, I definitely tend to prefer the cooler display tones overall.

What do you think?

It's never bothered me in any way to think about turning it off, so I guess I like it fine.

It's way too warm to my eye. Images look all wrong. I have it off. The lower reflectivity is the best part of the new screen. I enjoy that part a lot.

This poll will always come back as YES because those who want to justify the extra money spent vs just getting the ipad air 2 will never admit to being wrong that its useless. So they will not actually use it, but they will post here that they do because this is the internet, and this is how people are. /endthread

Oh. So its definitely not because people actually like and prefer the True Tone thing then?

Idiots.

Never turned it off, I think it's great

I like how it turns off automatically with photo apps

The display looks piss yellow with it on. I think it's a gimmick.

Stock screen calibrations have been moving progressively whiter for years which isn't accurate either but makes people think their new device is 'fresh' and 'modern'. Adapting to the ambient lighting color is a lot more natural than just making everything unrealistically white no matter the content, condition, or time of day.

That may be, but I think the screen is a lot prettier without it.

And yet the 12.9 is comically blue next to the smaller sibling which is stark white. The feature works and works well. I guess if you are biased toward cool displays, your opinion will differ.

Confusing it with night shift?

Right. As compared in the Apple store the 12.9 appears a violet mess side by side with the 9.7. Certainly under those conditions I feel the smaller pad does a better job especially with text contrast despite the larger pad having better overall contrast and black level measurements.

One interesting thing I realized after using them for a while is that I can set night shift on the 12.9 to match the true tone white point on the 9.7 and it is a huge huge improvement to the larger pad's display. Much less eye strain and much better text legibility.
