Really? Wow! I got $350 last night for my 256 Mini 6 (WiFi) last night from Best Buy. That's what pushed me over the edge to upgrade. I'd have passed too if I was offered $185. That's nuts, especially for one with cellular too.
$350 is good. Apple is only giving me $230 for my like new, 256GB Space Gray cellular.

The same here on the reload. I made the trade-in with Apple for $230. I could get a little more on eBay, but remove the seller fees and shipping, and it's not much different. This is way easier with Apple to trade in.

It's worth the extra RAM and a few other things that I pay less then $250 for the upgrade to Mini 7 (Have military discount on it too)

Lots of little upgrades, but they don’t add up to a compelling reason for me to upgrade. I’ll wait and see. If a compelling Android alternative came up, I might go for that, but I really like the Mini form factor- the size, aspect ratio etc just work for me.

Upgrading from a Mini 6 for a few reasons.

1) 64GB turned out to be too small, I have to worry about clearing space when doing updates etc.
2) Apple Intelligence once its released
3) Faster processor and more memory
4) Getting $230 for my Mini 6 so net cost is $269 to upgrade.

For me, #s 1 and 4, and 8GB RAM doesn't hurt.

It's the same reasoning of people who upgrade to the next iPhone each year. Either they have that upgrade plan with the carrier, or they just want to trade-in at top dollar (prior model) to get the newest with minimal out of pocket costs with trade-in/upgrade (sort of lol)

64GB is no longer enough storage, and the Apple trade-in on a 64GB WiFi Mini 6 turns out to be $230, which is very reasonable for a bottom-tier Mini 6 with no fees and no buyer complaints. I can reuse the case from the Mini 6. Somewhat disappointed that the gen 2 pencils won't work but I'll leave that with the 12.9" iPP.

It's not compelling but it's attractive, and that's enough.

Interesting. I go to the Best Buy website and look at the pre-order for the Mini 7 and it says only up to $260 on trade-in on a similar device. Then, when I look at what they will offer for my perfect, 256GB cellular Mini 6, it says $185. Apple says $230.

Edit: According to the Apple website, $230 is the highest trade-in value for a Mini 6. Apple trade-in values don't always make sense, and here's an example. The trade-in on the lowest-spec Mini 6 (WiFi only, 64GB) is also $230. I would have thought that either the 256GB storage or the cell modem (or both) would have kicked up the trade-in value at least a little.

I only really upgraded due to the storage too. I have the 64GB model which I've had since launch. It's never bothered me but I checked last night and I was using 49GB and I Remember when I wanted to update the software and I had to delete some stuff before I could do the update. So I get more storage, a new battery and a device that will keep me going for another few years. I have an S24 ultra that my husband purchased by accident when he was buying one for himself (managed to order 2!) which I kept but have now become bored with which needs to be sold as it's just sitting in a drawer. So in the end it's not going to cost me anything. So I thought why not. but I am not excited about it at all.

Trade in value in Canada for a base 6 is just north of 200 cad, a joke in itself, and certainly not worth the update given my use case atm. If this were my only iPad I’d probably have upgraded.

Just got the iPad mini 7 (A17 Pro) from Best Buy. Gotta say I’m quite impressed with the performance upgrade over the mini 6.

Browsing Best Buy’s website usually temporarily freezes or crashes my mini 6 after opening several tabs and it gets pretty sluggish navigating menus. Same goes for Amazon shopping cart saved items doom scrolling. Meanwhile, the mini 7 handled the same tasks without a hitch.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the 7. I just wish they hadn’t gotten rid of the physical SIM card slot.

Good to know that the performance upgrade is noticeable, I suppose you finally got it because you found a decent discount. Did you get the 5G version? The eSIM only situation is the main reason I am not considering it at the moment. And probably even if I got it at some point I'd tend to bring my mini 5 abroad in order to use local SIM cards (I moved to the M4 pro but I'll keep the M1 for travelling where a physical SIM card is the only or the cheaper option). Hopefully by the time the eSIM situation is better worldwide Apple will have made a mini with a higher refresh rate (even 90hz would be fine, I don't care about OLED, actually I would prefer it stays LCD, but I am afraid it would move to OLED before it gets some for of promotion...)

The Philippines is where I visit most and all the remaining carriers gradually rolled out prepaid eSIM support throughout 2024. The mini 7 is actually viable for me now.

That said, I’ll probably still stick to the mini 6 for travel as Google Fi only provides physical data-only SIMs.

I dunno what it was, but the first unit I had I was not impressed by lack of jelly scrolling..
I couldn't really see it with the one store unit I picked up and I don't really see it on my mini 7 blue unit. Maybe some slight variation in panels where refresh rate is a little slower makes it worse? dunno.

It wasnt' a dealbreaker to have jelly, especially because I got mini6 free as a hand me down, but I am glad to not be reminded something is there every time I scroll reader articles and general websites

It seems like the 8gb ram has helped with Safari tabs anecdotally...

I just picked up the Mini 7 and agree with you 💯 on the refresh rate! It’s really the only complaint that I have about the mini. I’ve got an M1 11 inch iPad Pro and an iPhone 15 pro…both with pro motion…so, I really notice the mini’s lack of a higher refresh rate.

The Mini is plenty powerful with the a17 pro (binned) chip and 8gb ram…but the “jittery” scrolling performance gives the illusion of slowness!

I actually pre-ordered the mini 7 and wound up cancelling it about 20 minutes later after I thought more about it. Obviously I would have loved OLED and ProMotion, but neither one of those things were rumored so I didn't expect that.

I would have been happy with just the spec bump, except for the fact that Apple didn't even put this year's processor in it. I know it's not a huge difference, but it's the principle for me. I'm going to stick with my mini 6 for now, pray this isn't the last mini, and hope we can get an upgrade with OLED sooner than 3 years from now.
Dammit, I couldn’t hold out any longer. I upgraded.

No regrets, though.

No, it’s mostly the same for me. But my previous mini only had 64GB of storage which is the thing that pushed me over the edge to upgrade. I had to keep deleting apps and data to update. So I went with a 256GB mini 7.

It is noticeably quicker and snappier so I don’t feel bad about upgrading.

Yeah, 64GB is way too little nowadays considering iOS + System Data already take up a third of that space.

Updating to 18.2, I had to offload a ton of apps because it wanted like 15GB free to install.

Traded in that 64GB mini 6 to Best Buy for $210 towards my mini 7 purchase so not all bad. I wasn’t planning on trading in my cellular 256GB mini 6 (need SIM cards slot) but I checked trade-in values on that anyway. It sucks that trade-in on that was $185 - less than what BB was offering for the 64GB wifi.

Why is it lower? That's what is holding me back from upgrading, aside from having to buy an pencil pro.

Logically there is no justification for offering less for a cellular version than a WiFi one - at worst it’ll be sold to someone who only wants WiFi, so would only pay WiFi price for it. So I can see the logic of offering very little for the Cellular part, but not less.

Bestbuy is not the end user - they use 3rd party to offload them. Maybe 3rd party values them less for some reason.

For example cellular versions could have blacklisted modems, liens on contracts against them, basically rendering it useless as a cellular model. Further they can't use the display and other tech from cellular to repair wifi models, because they will not pass SN check and will not work - makes sense to buy wifi models if one expects to refurbish more wifi models.

I just checked Best Buy for their trade in value, and I see that they decreased the amount for a mini 6 256GB WiFi version from the $350 I was given in November to $225.
