i'll wait for leopard and ilife07 because getting those saves me ~$200.

then i try to get a
a.)cheap refurb MBP core 2 duo 2.33
b.)or a cheap refurb Macbook core 2 duo
c.)or a Santa Rosa Macbook core 2 duo

i hope the timing will be that leopard, ilife07 and santa rosa Macbooks get released about the same time. then i can decide what the differences in price/performance are and go for the optimal system for me.

the speed increase from penryn will not be worth waiting another half year to a year. speed is not so important to me. i'd rather go future proof or cheap.

my 2 cents.

Waiting for a Santa Rosa refurb would mean you'd almost have to wait until Q3 or even the end of the year...

If you are eligible for educational pricing it might be a better idea to just shell out that extra $50-$100 and get a new one with the knowledge that you are at least getting a new box.

The real big bang for the buck really comes when a successor has been released, and those Macbooks drop to the $799/$899 price range.

.......................................

i wouldn't wait for the santa rosa refurb. it would be refurb MBP, refurb MB or new santa rosa MB. depending on Leopard performance, prices, how the santa rosa MB is equipped.

basically the best price/performance i can get for $1000 to $2000 at the time of santa rosa release.

that should be about april/may i hope.

penryn will be way to late to be part of that equation.

I'm wondering if the macbooks and macbook pros will actually become "lap" tops. All this talk about power saving leads me to believe that the MBs and MBPs will run a lot cooler.

Do you think we'll be able to place them on our laps without feeling any heat? I read that the current C2D MBPs are just a bit warm during normal use, but I am wondering if they'll one day be cool or less than warm (laptops that are warm are fine, but over time they might feel hot).

I wonder if the quad cores will provide actual significant performance increases. It sucks that already most programs can't fully use dual cores.

I saw a test in macworld with the Mac Pro, and disabling cores made very little differences in most programs. However, the programs that were designed to take advantage of several processors had proportional drops to the # of cores disabled.

So I'd say it's all in the programmers hands now.

I have $600 so far saved up for my next purchase, my iBook G4's logic board just went. I'm definitely waiting until leopard ships with them.

Any comments about this? Will they actually start becoming "lap" tops?

Buy Santa Rosa MBP With 4GB Of RAM

OK, so MR has posted a news item on Intel demoing new 45nm Penryn laptop chips, ready before the end of this year.

... a few improvements.

- 45 nm
- lower heat
- better battery life
- SSE4
- quad core (possibly 8-core?)

Great news to those waiting, like myself who's still using an old, slow 2004 PowerBook. But given the delays in going from 90nm to 65nm, it might be possible the transition to 45nm could prove troublesome for the chipmaker.

Should I buy a MacBook now, or should I wait for Penryn?
Best compromise is to buy the next MacBook Pro after it can see 4GB of RAM and comes with Leopard and iLife '07 - the Santa Rosa model. That's my plan.

I am on a 12" PB 1.33G4. I am waiting for Santarosa MacBook, Leopard, and iLife '07. I am thinking late June. May have to get an AppleTV in the interim to play all the nifty HD podcasts I am downloading.

It's my guess that spicyapple just did this to get it out of the way. I think we should ban all questions that involve 2 generations in advance. Well, not really, but I am getting tired of some of them. Anyways...Here's my thinking. Yep they'll be faster, conserve more power, have new features, and yes you will have to wait longer. Will it be worth it. The automatic answer by most: If you need it, get it now. If you don't, wait.

Just buy when you need it yada, yada, yada... hey, let's face it, it's fun to time one's purchase. Can be torture, but it can be fun too. I gotta admit, I rarely absolutely need a new laptop, truth is, I just like some change from time to time. Same with software - rarely do I need something better than the current version of whatever software I have - and that goes for the OS as well... Tiger does everything I need it to... can it be improved? sure, but that's details... it won't make a substantial difference - at least to me.

Fact is, my 12" G4 iBook (see sig) does everything I need it to do. I'll never get rid of it (it may die though!). Still, I will buy another laptop or iMac, just cause I like new toys :)

And since I don't have the "need" pressure, I can pick and choose when and what.

And for me, I looked at the specs and Santa Rosa doesn't do it for me. Penryn does, because Penryn really drops the temperature - and that's a key factor for a laptop, much more important to me than a 10% boost in CPU speed.

So, I'll get a new laptop or iMac when: there's Penryn inside and not the first iteration either, but say the second revision, so the bugs are worked out, a LED screen (hopefully!), a refreshed form factor (hopefully!) and Leopard is quite mature. I figure - fall of 2008... still 18 months from now.

I'm waiting for 10.5 and the Santa Rosa chips. That's as long as I can wait. Hopefully that upgrade will be fairly significant and offer some other things like LED backlight and lower power cunsuption pre-n wireless cards.

yep...

absolutely waiting, although his big brother is a year or so away, but that is just way to long to wait.

Why Wait For Penryn When So Much More Power Will Be In The Next Updates?

I'll probably buy the next MBP revision when it comes with Leopard and ilife '07. I don't need to wait for Penryn.
A Dual Clovertown Mac Pro will be plenty of an increase for now. I'll take a look at Penryn when it goes into next year's Macs. But I'm more interessted in the 16 core Mac Pro than I am Penryn. Perhaps they're the same?

I really don't even know what Penryn is. And I don't really care because it is next year not this year with the new Leopard.

All I Want Is A Dual Clovertown 8 Core Mac Pro. Simple. And I'm still waiting for it!

I WILL NOT WAIT FOR ANYTHING Beyond The 8 Core Dual Clovertown Mac Pro

I don't think you have this quite right. Penryn is Intel's microarchitecture that is going to be in production in the second half of 07. The 08 release you might be thinking of is Nahalem which is a different beast all together.
If you hold a gun to my head and say "Don't buy a dual Clovertown 8 Core Mac Pro and Wait For Penryn" I will press the buy button as my last act on earth. Go ahead Shoot Me. I DON'T CARE ABOUT WHAT's BEYOND Dual Clovertown. KILL ME. No Problem.

Plus I do not believe there will be any Penryn Macs in 2007. My head is spinning. Why did you have to put that link in here.

Agreed.

I just want my 2.6 Ghz 15" MP with 512Mb X2600, 2GB 800MHz RAM, high res screen, internal flash memory, Leopard, and the new iLife. And yes, I will continue to spam these threads until I get it!

I mean, I suppose Penryn is equivalent to the Merom upgrade, and how long did we wait for that, eh?

You can wait for shinier, faster, better forever. Unless something's imminent or the next iteration is especially compelling to you, it's generally not worth hanging on, IMO. Leopard and Santa Rosa are probably worth waiting for if you're not absolutely desperate for a new machine, but another six months or so on top? Probably not worth it... I only think it's worth it for Leopard/SR because the two will likely arrive together...

As stated, the Leopard + SR combo seems to be a pretty logical milestone if you can hold out. I feel that it will be well worth it for those of us can wait until that combo is released. It just doesn't make sense to get one now when a completely revised OS and chipset are only a couple of months away.

And I don't even HAVE a computer at the moment.... I'm jonesing!

But honestly, who cares about what's coming out in 2010 or whenever? Just wait until it stops making sense to you to do so - and then dive in.
