Argghhh, 10.10.3 Supplemental Update breaks Nvidia drivers...AGAIN

Now build 14D136

Probably OK if you stuck with the "Beta" version from Nvidia.

But anyone who has:

GTX750/Ti
GTX780Ti
GTX Titan Black
GTX960
GTX970
GTX980
GTX Titan-X

Should hold off on this update. I believe the last "real" drive looks for 14D131 so I can verify that it "breaks" it. Those comfortable modding things can change the usual things.

Will be putting an update procedure on our Blog when I get back from a swim.

A couple dozen Betas and still it needs a fix a few days after release....guess designing watch bands really requires some engineering skill.

Hold off on the update if you have one of those cards, with or without EFI.
 
Zombster, I doubt that Apple has done the right thing and added Maxwell support to 10.10.4.

My guess is that we won't see that until another Apple machine gets a new Nvidia card. So if next MBP gets a GTX970M, get happy. It's a pity that they didn't put a GTX980M in the 5K iMac, it would have run better and cooler if they had.

I have posted a fix on our blog that easily,with just one reboot, gets you into this 10.10.3 Supplemental Update. Was rather painless for me but then I do this stuff all the time. Sadly the "easy" fix means you need to go into kext dev mode.

Should work for those with EFI flashed cards as well as non-flashed.
 
It's a pity that they didn't put a GTX980M in the 5K iMac, it would have run better and cooler if they had.

I really wonder why. Maybe a combination of AMD giving them a sweet deal and their wanting to bury CUDA under OpenCL?

Seems AMD is moving in the opposite direction Apple wants though re: power efficient designs + heat. That's our biggest hope.
 
Just heard from Netkas, maybe some good news for us in 10.10.4.

NO, there isn't Maxwell support yet but maybe a little fixer option to avoid some of these recent hysterics every time Apple decides to fix a colon where they meant to have a semi-colon and break all the GPU drivers.

Updates soon.

Also, Would creating a USB boot stick with the proper drivers be a viable solution for updates? I have not done the 10.10.3 supplemental yet, but If I make a boot stick first, can I update the system, then the webdriver in one shot?

Presumably both. CUDA doesn't benefit Apple, and even when you consider that the DX00 GPUs in the Mac were downclocked FirePros without ECC, they were still a tremendous value compared to the MSRP for those ones. Considering the cost of the retina iMac, I assume they're getting some very sweet deals from component suppliers for that too.

That said, Apple has always been happy to flip-flop between their card suppliers, so I don't think it's set in stone, especially for the iMacs and MBP—the more exclusive form factor means AMD might be more amenable to producing cards for the Mac Pro, and/or Nvidia might balk at the pricing Apple would demand.

Nope, sarcasm's on vacation. He's talking about drivers, so obviously software engineers. Its doubtful software engineers would be designing watchbands.

Looking at their revenue, Apple's customers are iPhone buyers. Mac sales are very small compared to that. Mac Pro sales are probably a tiny fraction of that. And the number of people who run unsupported video cards in old Mac Pros are probably a tiny fraction of that. In other words, we are unimportant.

So it is very reasonable for Apple to put an extremely low priority on developing, testing, and including drivers for video cards that they don't sell.

IBM, on the other hand, screws their main customers. That's a completely different story.

Besides, a much better question is why does Nvidia insist on making their drivers point-release-specific? I really, really appreciate that they are providing them at all, but I still don't understand their motivation with this. If they made it easier, more Mac Pro users would buy more of their cards.

Just wondering if purchasing a used GT120 on eBay would be a convenient and reasonably cheap way to have a work around in the future without needing to swap around cards. The GT120 only needs the PCIE slot for power eh?

That's what I'm doing. In fact, I'm running both my displays off it, mainly because I don't game (at all) and it works fine, and just displaying video on my GPU's takes a hit in render speed. So I've got the GT120 in slot 4 and the 970's in 1 and 2.

Works fine.
