Arghhhh! 32GB is not enough!!!!

Just finished the initial sync of my 32GB iPad and got a message that my photos haven't been sync'd as there isn't enough room o the iPad :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I have ~12,000 photos and I sync my Aperture library. On my 32GB iPhone my photos only take up 7.6GB and there is 16GB free. I realize that photos will be optimized to a larger size on the iPad due to the larger screen size but even so.

Not a happy bunny :(
 
That's a shame. I got a 32gb iPad but have not got anywhere near that number of pictures.

Do you need 12000 on your iPad? I have not put any on yet but my library is only about 1000.
 
Thats an awfull lot of photos to carry around with you...... ! why would you want so many? the device should be more of an extension to your central hub of media, rather then a clone !

How much music and videos/movies are you also syncing?
 
I just sync the last 6 months of photos to my iphone and ipad. You'll run out of friends pretty quickly if you are showing them 17,000 photos!
 
@whitebook - no offence taken.

To all those asking do I need all 12,000 photos the answer is no, I don't need them, but it's just convenient to have them all.

When I had an 8GB Touch I obviously couldn't get them all on so had to be selective but, as Sod's Law dictates, there were plenty of times when a photo I wanted wasn't on.

However, I can't understand why there isn't sufficient room. As I said, I use Aperture with referenced Masters (i.e. the master images are stored outside the Aperture Library.

There's 23GB free on the iPad and the total size of all the Masters is 46GB BUT the vast majority of those Masters are 10Mpx (3900x2600) RAW images. If these are exported full-size as JPGs they are ~3MB each so that would only be ~15GB, but optimized photos would be smaller than full size so even less "disk" space.

The bottom line is, the numbers just don't add up :confused:

Agreed. OP, obviously, you just need to cut back on the number of photos you sync. Or you can just use this as an excuse to get the 64GB iPad. :)
 
i have about 9000 pics and a 64GB iPad. While it is tempting to sync all to the iPad because it's easier I will go through all of them and rate them from 1-5 stars and sync only the good ones. I don't really need all 9000 of them on the go.
 
I didn't sync any photos to my 3G iPad. I did get a Web Albums app and that gives me access to all my photos on Picasa. Works for me.
 
I synced over 11000 images onto my 32GB iPad and still have plenty of room remaining. My camera only shoots 6.3MPix images so could that be why?
 
the only thing photos that i have on my ipad is my little girl and wife. probably couple of hundreds.. i dont like **** photos on my ipad. but anyway, i do have a 64GB 3G

sell you ipad while they are still hot. then upgrade
 
Hold on a sec, I may be missing something here but if you're on 3MB an image and you're trying to sync up 12,000 photos isn't that:

3 x 12,000 = 36,000MB = 36GB?

Not 15Gb as stated in the OP's last post? Even if it's compressed down a bit (which I'm not sure the iPad does much of) you still need to cut over a third from the total size to get down to the 23Gb you've got free on the device.

Or I could be having a brain failure moment, it's been a long long day.

Edit - Just did a VERY quick bit of research and it seems like iTunes syncs the preview images from Aperture. Check to see what size they are as I'm not sure it does any compression on them and try setting the preview image options to whatever the smallest size is above 1024 x 768. That might help a bit.
 
32 GB is plenty for me!

I've filled less than half of my 32 GB iPad and almost half of my 16 GB iPhone. People have varying storage needs though. General Rule of thumb, IMHO, is to buy as much memory and hard drive/flash space that you can afford. ;)

Good point - I was doing a rough 1/3 of the total RAW size, but not all of them are RAW.

Ah, thank you. My preview size in Aperture is 1920x1200 (size of my 24" display I attach to my MBP). Seems, based on what you have found, that iTunes doesn't optimize (i.e. reduce the size) for the iPad screen as it does for the iPhone. I e-mailed a photo from my iPhone and it is only 640x426 (3:2 aspect ratio) and 94KB - a whole lot less that the 10MB original RAW.

Edit but my Aperture library - where the Previews are stored - is only 20GB and that includes the thumbnails, edit data, metadata, etc. so even the 1920x1200 previews should fit

Don't tell him how to use his iDevice.

OP, I bet you can sell it for what you paid, if not a small profit, and buy the 64GB one.

Even as a photographer I can't imagine how having 12,000 images with you all the time is convenient in any way. Sounds to me like you need a serious edit session.

But if you must sync them all, try exporting them as high quality JPGs with 1024 pixels for the long dimension. You can only zoom so far on the iPad, so 3mb quality is overkill. This should get you down to 1mb or less per photo.

Sell it and get a 64GB. Next case!
 
With that many photos, Photobucket, flickr, or MobileMe Gallery may be better places to store them and show them to others when you need to.

I only have the critical ones I NEED in the event there is no 3G or wifi access where I am at.

Hope you find a decent resolution to your problem.
