It's human nature to feel the need to fill up empty space. It's why a congested highway that is then enlarged remains congested. 32GBs is plenty if you manage your content. If you don't manage it 64gb will fill up soon too. But the odds of you needing that much media in any given week or two is probably really low unless you sit on your ass all day -- and if that is the case you have a TV and a computer.
 
I guess most of you won't care since you don't seem to agree with my use of my iPad, but anyway....

I've just selected about half my photos and synced them - 5992 photos taking up just 2.71GB - which means, as I suspected, more than plenty of space.

As smiddlehurst correctly stated, it does copy them to the iPad at the same resolution as my Aperture previews - 1920x1200.

It looks like a bug in iTunes when it attempts to estimate the space needed.

Guess I'll report it to Apple via feedback.
