We have a love/hate relationship with these echo devices.

On the one hand, when someone presses the Ring doorbell, a live picture shows up on each floor. The rest of the time, it acts as a picture frame. Bloody brilliant!

On the other hand, Amazon have started using the devices to show adverts that appear impossible to switch off, so it seems we've paid for a set of displays to watch adverts throughout the house. It's a bit like paying for your car to be washed and waxed, only to find the car wash painted their logo on to your rear bumper (it's my bumper, not theirs).

Not impressed.

Not surprising about the ads! Glad I haven't delved into the Amazon ecosystem yet, and now I definitely won't be!

Isn't the difference with these 'dedicated' home devices & an iPad that these devices can show multiple things at once & however you configure it, it stays that way. I want to be able to see all of my cameras, some of my smart devices, & also have a space for a digital frame.

I've been waiting for Apple's version especially since, as others have stated, the echo devices show ads that you can't turn off. That finally pissed me off enough that I gave mine away & got the Google version.

However, with Apple's version being just 6 inches, it's not going to do what I want it to do.

I hope it looks like this. This and the G4 cube two of my favorite Mac designs all time.

Echo show 5 is the last amazon device i have and will ever buy. Bc of the audio jack to connect it to my speakers.
I hate amazons interfaces so much. Always a new type of ad or popup you have to disable. Terrible

So one more Apple device to upgrade, update and worry about. I have about 10 Apple computers (3 iPads, 2 MacBooks, 3 iPhones, Apple TV and Apple Watch) and numerous accessories but adding another device that my other devices are perfectly capable of emulating does not make sense.

Apparently, Apple thinks you still have some money on you that they can get from you. So they roll out "one more" to try to extract it. If they can't, another "one more" will launch soon afterwards to try again (or work again). Etc. This strategy has made them "richest company in the world" on any given day. It seems it can keep working until- apparently- we all run out of any more free cash/credit/organs/blood and then they- and we- will be in real trouble. ;)

Or adopt the old anti-drug slogan: "Just say no" and let existing tech cover this base just fine. I suspect most showing interest in the rumor probably have multiple Apple screen devices lying in drawers that could be resurrected /Unretired and dedicated to these kinds of uses. Brackets- including swivel ones- to hold such devices are dirt cheap on Amazon and similar.

But Apple will roll out this thing with some catchy tag like "Dynamic Peninsula" or "Magical Strobe-a-matic" etc and many will fall all over themselves desperately trying to get one+. "We think you'll love it", then "another record quarter" and the beat goes on. We've seen this movie many times before.

The issue is sent even that this is more expensive than my tv (which is perfectly fine), the issue is that Siri is **** and ill not buy another thing unless it takes my Apple home to another level without replacing every single device.

I am not sure why everyone is complaining about being bombarded with Amazon ads. I have been using the Echo Show 15 almost since its time of release and I have never seen anything displayed on its screen that I hadn't chosen to see.

If you swipe down from the top of the screen and choose "Settings" and then select "Home Content," there are myriad options you can easily turn on and off. For example, in this section, I have turned off things like "Alexa Suggests" and "Shop." Perhaps this is why I have never seen an advertisement for anything from Amazon or anyone else on the Echo Show's screen.

Now Now. You know we can't let actual facts get in the way of a good Biased argument on these forums... LOL ;)

On the other side of the webcam is a slave in Myanmar forced to collect nudes and send out ransom demands. A 21 inch screen will make it easier to read the blackmail.

I have a tiny show 5, I want it to just be a clock, except when I ask something.
Well, it keeps turning other options on (I guess with updates) and shows suggestions or stuff like that.
It's utterly frustrating that it could technically work very well and chooses not to.

really?

Well, ive had a show 15 for a couple of years.

I don't want ANY content on the 'home' screen that I haven't chosen to see.

Over the last 2 years they add more, and more 'categories' that are switched on by default. As soon as a new one appears you certainly can go into settings and switch it off....

However, in recent months they have introduced 'SPONSORED CONTENT" and this is completely arbitrary and there is NO way to switch it off and its ruining the whole echo show experience.

I would not buy another if this is what they are intending to do going forward.

Of course none of the promotional images show the Home Screen being obliterated by the 'sponsored content'.

£400 is a lot, for most people.
If there are ANY ads on it, they can pay ME to have the device.

I have a echo show 15 - it is a horribly restricted and clumsy device. You can‘t even run home-assistant on it.
Only if you do everything via Alexa it is useful.
I have since trashed it and replaced by a wall-mounted iPad (again).

I hope Apple enters this product segment... my wife is wanting a digital "frame" to rotate through family photos. She got this idea as some relatives have the Netgear "Meurals", which work petty well but I don't like the aspect ratio or size that much. I've looked into that as well as using a Samsung Frame (32"), but neither is ideal. What would be ideal for us:

  1. Size of 24-32 inches, AR 16:9 or 3:2
  2. Slim profile, should look like a picture frame
  3. Integration with Apple Photos
  4. Integration with Calendar
  5. Homekit / Matter integration
Obviously, integration with any iCloud services would be a given, but I list them as those are what would be important for us. I'm sure Apple pricing would be expensive, but all the other alternatives are $500+ without good Apple ecosystem benefits. If it could be priced under $1000, but closer to $800 that would be great.

🤞
For sure you will not get this from Amazon

I really, really wish Apple supported Zigbee. The only reason I still use Alexa is because of this. The Hue hub could potentially solve this, but I have never been able to get it to work even though the Hue bulbs are actually Zigbee compliant and can talk directly to the Alexa devices albeit with lower functionality.
Huh?

I've got Hue and other Zigbee bulbs all over the house, the Hue hub is connected to HomeKit and Home Assistant, it works just fine. I have had a few bulbs that had trouble pairing with the hub, the Hue Lights app has a force pairing mode that works really well for fixing those, you don't even need the paid version of the app to make it work. You do have to power up the bulb when it's very close to the hub, then run the Touchlink routine in the app. Once that's done, you can put the bulb wherever you want.

This stupid thing is a hard no, I don't allow Amazon devices with microphones in my house, I definitely won't allow one with a *#$@!$ camera inside.

Me too. The Show 8 is a sensational device which (for around £100) lets my elderly technophobic parents video chat with family on the other side of the world for free (without their even needing to lift a finger to answer, once we’d set it up for them).
As a bonus it sounds better than any other portable music player in the house. I’ve never seen any adverts on it either, so I’m not sure why all these other commenters are getting them.
