We were hit in a pretty bad rear ending accident and my wife suffered a serious back injury. It’s called CES. She had emergency surgery on Sunday morning. She suffer a herniated disc between L5 and 4. She currently has no feeling in her left leg and other issues with her bowels and urine retention. Earlier this year she battled breast cancer and was just getting her energy and mobility back. Now this. She will be in a rehabilitation center for 2-3 weeks starting tomorrow. I am doing the best i can but it’s hard. Thanks for any well wishes and support.

Saw your post, Adam. I am, of course, so very sorry for your wife's troubles. I am guessing the surgery she had was spinal decompression surgery, and they are now waiting on the nerve response and swelling to go down before they evaluate. Especially after a breast cancer battle, it's almost more than any person can bear. Looking at your photo, I can spy what looks to be a puppy; they are the very best to stand beside you no matter what happens. Of course, I am not equating our dog's injury with what your wife has gone through...only to note that one of our miniature doxies had an injury very similar to your wife's, and the surgeon told us our little guy would probably not walk...and he was correct. Having said that, our doxie was the most lovable, smartest, almost zen-like of all the 5 pups we ever had...and lived a trouble-free 6 more years; he, too, had neither bladder or bowel control, because of his back leg paralysis, but he never suffered infections...or, really, any further problems based on that fateful injury. You can adapt...won't be easy, but it's possible. In fact, our little pup died of Cushing's disease at the age of 12 (his injury was at 4), something entirely different. That said, you will need to "gird up your loins" to deal with this situation. If you are religious, you couldn't find a better time to rely on your faith. Best wishes...and please post back.

Thank you everyone. It has been very difficult. But she is fighting hard to get things moving and working again. She can stand up now and shuffle 3-4 feet before she is just to exhausted to do more. Her left leg is still numb but she has some control. Basics of moving the foot and slightly bending her knee and toes. She describes it like someone put an epidural in her hip.

I am extremely tired and mentally drained. Got a good nights sleep in last night the first time in several days. Got to eat better.

Thanks again everyone. It means a lot.

Very sorry to hear this. Mrs AFB is basically my world and I have no idea how I’d cope with all that.

It does sound like at least she has made some progress.
Hoping for a quick and full recovery.

I’m sorry to hear that.

It does sound like she is making progress, which is good to hear. One step at a time, and all that, both metaphorically and literally. Remember to take some time for yourself.

Best wishes to both of you.

What a day. 3 days ago she couldn’t walk but 3-4 feet. Today she pushed her self to her limits. She walked with a walker 87 feet. She was in tears. As was I. But she did it. She is exhausted but the PT said it was amazing. Her leg is still numb but having some signals of pain and muscle aches. Thanks again.

That's great news. I missed your thread earlier, but I'm pulling for her!

I’m so sorry. We’re having similar problems here, my wife had to have the whole shebang after a cancer diagnosis. It’s been a rough year for sure. I hope yours recovers quickly, I know how hard it is, and pace yourself because all the care takes a lot out of you too. I hope you have family and friends to support both of you.

Sorry to hear of the accident but very glad to hear her recovery is coming along. At least half the battle is keeping your head in the game and it sounds like you both have that going for you. Best wishes for her continued recovery.

Sorry for the lack of updates. My wife is doing a good bit better. She is working her butt off to regain motion and feeling. And it’s slowly working. She has regained feeling to mid thigh her toes are still completely numb. She is also getting signs of pressure and a slight sense of discomfort when she needs to use the restroom. Today she walked with just a walker 110 feet before her body said enough. I am so proud of her strength and determination. We are and so is the PT hopeful that she may only need to stay 10 more days. Tomorrow is a care team meeting. Will update date tomorrow night. Thanks again.
