I disagree that photostream is completely useless, as long as it is flexible about what gets pushed where. I want my photos "pushed" to my Mac rather than having to think about them. I certainly don't need them duplicated on any of my other iOS devices. I just need to find a way to automate pushing them from my Mac to whatever service I wind up using as my gallery (picasa, flickr or whatever). Hopefully Apple provides a way to block pushing photos to all my iOS devices (which would fill them up). Apple has a rather comical setting in iTunes to "fill unused space". Since iOS devices are becoming primary computers, the very idea of filling unused space, whether with music or with pictures is about the dumbest idea in modern history. I need free space on my device for apps and documents not photos and music. I rarely have over a gig of music and another gig of photos on any of my iOS devices.

if you only use 'i' devices then I can see the use

take a photo on iPhone
auto uploads this to cloud
next time Mac is on it downloads to it

take a picture on regular camera
import to mac as now
mac uploads to cloud
'i' devices auto receive this

still undecided on this feature

so confused

I left Dropbox 3 years ago and moved to Mobile Me. Dropbox was too long to upload and keep synced, many time out errors. I used iDisk for all file syncs. When GoodSync for MAC came onboard this year our PC-MAC home was in even. All worked smoothly. So easy to photo share unlike Piscassa, Flikr, etc.

I have been in the hospital much of June and until today did not understand all of this. Now complicated by a move in mid July. I REALLY depended on Mobile Me to allow me access to 8 GB of documents until settled into my next home in Aug.

Suddenly I am faced to re-upload all in the next 24 hours to another sync system. Plus I have to find a system that works/worked as seamless and dependable as iDisk. Seriously! Password protected house settlement docs, movers docs, everything is going to disappear suddenly tomorrow?

I am sick, literally and figuratively. I am so bummed. I have lost trust in MAC. Apple should continue to provide iDisk access until iCloud is functional and have found a way to movement of iDisk files to iCloud.
What I found on the Apple site seems to say that sometime this fall, iCloud will be available for sign-up. Meanwhile Mobile Me files will vanish tomorrow and whenever iCloud "begins" I can start over. Is this correct? Or is there an iCloud to sign up on today?

so confused

wolfpackfan, Thank you I am so relieved. I have been extremely sick and not able to focus my thoughts right now due to medications. Everything from Apple, emails and web said Mobile Me expired June 30th which is today. Thank you for explaining that is 2012, not 2011. So I will still have all my iDisk docs and access tomorrow and have time to figure it out for a year.
THANKS!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I find gallery and Apple's MobileMe web interface very nice and useful. I purchased Apple TV, in part, because it provided a platform for viewing and sharing my Gallery pictures! PLEASE MR. Jobs, keep photo-sharing in the iCloud.

I am still hoping that apple revive galleries somehow. It is perfect for sharing photos with the family and v easy to use. I use iDisk, but not that frequently, it was just convenient to have everything all under one umbrella.

Fingers crossed though, I'm not rushing into anything, I will continue to use it for another year and see what happens.

Just deleted my idisk and gallery apps from my iphone.
when you join google+ you will get unlimited space for googles picassa photo gallery for free!

Google also offers a plugin for iphoto which allows you to upload your events and albums to picassa straight from within the app.

Does Picasa support videos?

Do it yourself!

iDisk is the main reason I paid for MM...that and the ease of syncing calendars and contacts which will pretty much be unchanged. iDisk came in particularly useful when the iPad came out and I got pages. While I'd like to live edit the download/upload methods still worked for me. On my Mac and on the windows computers at my job, I do not have iWork so iCloud for file storage is useless plus I can save any file types in iDisk (particularly photoshop files).

My solution...store the files myself. Another option in Pages is WebDAV so I took an old G5 tower server I had and set it up for WebDAV. The only thing I'm missing is the online interface (I can download just not upload from a browser). Unlimited (to the amount of my hard drives) storage and works well cross platform (iPad, Mac, and PC). Never used the file sharing feature much...another loss...so will need to find a way to send large files since that's the only times I used iDisk sharing. I can send links but I have a feeling people that don't know about the server I set up might hesitate to click the link. Oh well anyone using this method?

Like iDisk best

Well I just had to upload 2 more zip files and send links to folks so they can download them. I re-tried Drop Box and signed up for Sugar Sync. The problem is that they require the person downloading the file to have an account. I REALLY HATE that! What was so nice about iDisk is that the person I am sharing with only needs to click on the link. There is no requirement for them to sign up for an account.
So I am still looking for a replacement. I am thinking about getting a home server next year. It would ensure my backups and allow others to access files and folders.

Home server is the way to go. Especially with Lion out, just get a Mac mini server (no monitor needed) and I set mine up (old G5 tower with Leopard Server hosting a website and WebDAV) on my own but a site I use for other things that can walk you through the steps is Lynda.com excellent training videos for almost any application. A little pricey but you can google free trials which will give you two weeks to set it up. If you wanted I could even remote in a do it for you (while u watch) and show you how to manage it so save the user name for the future.

Dropbox doesn't require the recipient to sign up for an account, just put the file into your Public folder and give them the link.

unfortunately you can only give public links to individual files, not entire folders (a major pet peeve) It's true that the recipient does need a dropbox account if you want to set up arbitrary shared folders with them, but individual files in your Public folder CAN be sent to anyone without an account.

IMO the best site to use to send large files to people is wetransfer.com. no need for recipients to sign up. the interface is really simple to use. I use wetransfer when I've got files to send that are larger than my free Dropbox account can hold.

although I use most other MobileMe features, iDisk via the Finder has always been incredibly SLOOOOWWW for me, so I could never rely on it.

I'm still at a lost to what to do. I started using .Mac because I can connect and transfer stuff to my clients. I also convinced a lot of my artsy friends to get MobileMe solely because of Mail and iDisk. Also, Gallery is great for a photographer to use. All this moving and arranging from .Mac to mobileme is basically a waste. Now I have to start over again. Mind you MobileMe was only around for 2yrs.

I don't know. Sure its simple to use dropbox, but my work is copywritten and I would hate for it to get in the wrong hands. That would be loss in money and possibly opportunities. Plus more expenses. I would spend $200 per year just to keep MobileMe as is. :mad:

Smug Mug

I am so tired of moving photos- trusting sites that gave me service for years and let me down. Yahoo GeoCitied and Photos is only one example. I was deployed and came back 18 mo later to find every photo gone! And PC destroyd in storage. Heartbreaking . Then to have to move from Ofoto now Gallery.
So here I am again looking for something to trust for my backups.
Mofunk- Please take a serious look at Smug Mug. I found that name repeated over and over in photography forums.
I started using 3 days ago and very impressed. It took only moments to transfer my domain there- the CNAME change was the easiest change I have ever made. Full resolution storage. Unlimited. Best deal around for raw files storage. Or storing other file types. Best organization features. Client programs for iPhone. A slew of ways to protect, hide, promote individual photos, galleries or directories. Custom naming and organizing directories and sub directories (categories) with expanded, tied or sensible URLs. No requirement for receiver to log in or establish an account. Protect of all or individual images from downloading. Integrated plug ins to upload from all Adobe and Apple editing software. Downloading of multiple files in a zip.
I could ramble on. I could give you a discount code that saves me $5. But I won't. This site is strong enough on it's own for any artist/photographer to trust.
This may not solve your iDisk needs but Smug Mug will handle your images.

I've used SmugMug for a few years now and love it. They are a hit in the photography space. I would highly recommend them and I don't think they are going away any time soon.

Apple has succeeded in forcing myself and family out of Apple ecosystem during their MobileMe -> iCloud. You're not alone.

MobileMe Mail -> Google Apps Mail
MM Cal -> Google Calendar
MM Contacts -> Google Contacts
MM Gallery -> Google Picasa
MM iDisk -> Dropbox

Since moving to the MAC I use iPhoto. In iPhoto there is a "Share" Menu item.
Right now you have Email, MobileMe Gallery, Flickr, Facebook and Photo Stream. As we know MM Gallery is going away. What about Facebook or Flickr? I use Facebook now but my use is limited. I don't know anything about Flickr. My point is I really like iPhoto and hope Apple enhances it to be a much better Sharing solution for multiple Mac's and iOS Devices. Much like I share a Calendar now. Would be nice to just update my iPhoto Library it would update everything else via iCloud.

Mike- I'm not impressed with Flickr. Small resolution, limited size, no video uploads and they replaced Yahoo Photos which left me high and dry after giving me only a few months notice and then didn't move my photos over so lost them.
Given the choice I would opt for Google bundle - mail, calendar, contacts & photos. I use Google plus tried You Tube- all OK.
In my case Smug Mug is less money per yr than buying another ext drive or NAS or burning DVDs so I use it as backup. My family is all on FB so I use that too.
