That's why I said "the so called 'soft cap'". I also don't believe it's ever been explicitly mentioned by AT&T but it's implicit in the term "excessive usage".

Yea, American Express advertises (or at least used to, sorry, no link) that they have no spending caps. I highly doubt that is true either. There is a cap, you just don't know what it is (for American Express).

If you dig threw their site a little you will find that they stat that they monitor your monthly spending, credit score and so on. If they see a change in any of them they will put a cap on it. It is a soft limit but there is one. It is lot like ATT excessive usage cap.

Soft cap limit. Soft cap limit. Soft cap limit. Nope, there's still no soft cap limit, no matter how many times you keep saying there is one. This isn't Beetlejuice.

BTW, The Blair Witch Project was a hoax and only a movie. It never happened. Also, Santa Claus is not real. I just wanted to squash any rumors in case someone starts spreading those now too. ;)

Yet in the contract they say they reserve the right to bill extra for excessive usage aka soft cap limit.

Means it can move. Some one who pulls down 10gigs of data in a month should get a bill for excessive usage.

In the years I've been on this forum I'm not aware of a single iphone user who has had service revoked because of excessive data usage. I myself have been tethering extensively with my 3GS for many months using a ton of data...no issues with AT&T whatsoever. And yet the fear persists that AT&T spends their time combing over your data usage revoking iphones left and right. It's like a communal paranoia.

Saying there isn't soft cap but there is excessive usage is like saying you're not gay but you make gay porn.

I've never seen you get so fired up about something like this before. It's not that big of a deal. "Excessive usage" is a broad term. Agreed? With broad terms come broad generalizations. Don't be mad at people on these forums and other forums for talking about soft cap limits. Point that finger towards AT&T if you want.

My personal opinion says that AT&T just uses it as a scare tactic to their customers that are thinking of doing the 't-word.' Nobody in their right mind should be able to download over 5GB on a phone in a month period by simply browsing and playing games. And if you do go over it, then you're NOT IN YOUR RIGHT MIND! Get off your damn phone and get a life.

No carrier has cap limits on data for smartphones, and AT&T doesn't want to have to say the data is limited to 5GB. Cause then Sprint and Verizon will have a field day and market the hell out of their "Unlimited Data Plans!!"

Whether you like it or not Aggie, this conversation will always lead back to tethering. It is tethering, 99% of the time, that leads to the "excessive usage." Tethering ignores the TOC and should result in your contract being terminated if AT&T catches on whether you like it or not.

Soft caps aren't real. Just look at the term. It makes no sense at all. Terms like soft caps have been around for years to try to prevent people from doing something they don't want to happen. You better believe AT&T reps talk to cell phone salespeople and get on forums and talk about it behind the scenes to get the rumors flowing. Then corporate just sits back and acts like its not happening. I would do the EXACT same thing if I was in their shoes.

BTW, don't hate on me. I have just as much proof as everybody else does in this thread, none.

If more people like you would come here and said that, the paranoia would go away. I've been looking through several forums and only here someone said that used more than 6GB and had no problems with AT&T.

Are you able to pull up your numbers and show us how much data you've used over the past few months, month by month? I would appreciate it.

Hey, I'm not mad. Mainly, I'm just trying to stop misinformation, especially for the new people, but I'm not going to continue arguing/debating this with them.

BTW, I totally agree with the tethering usage not being part of the TOS (and I tether). However, I only do it in emergencies and for small periods of time.

Anyway, again not mad. Not hating. I'd post bunnies, but I'd get in trouble. :)
