I am grandfathered in on the original AT&T ipad data plan. It’s been $29 since 2010. I’ve transfered it to every ipad I’ve owned since. It never went up once. I understood that is why they stopped this plan 3 months after the first ipad came out in 2010...because they realized they couldn’t legally raise the price. And why thousands of people like me kept their grandfathered plan all these years. They did find a way to legally throttle heavy data users...but they were never able to raise the price. I also received one of these emails. But i don’t believe it applies to us original grandfathered plan users.

I didn't realize the original one couldn't have it's price raised, since they were able to change the terms for de-prioritization. I got rid of it a couple years ago. I've been on and off it since then, thinking of changing back to the T-Mobile 5GB/$10 plan which has generally been available (though wasn't on my iPad 2 weeks ago). For my usage, this is fine, and cheaper.

What do you mean it does not apply to the original grandfathered people? And what do you mean they can’t legally raise the price? they just did...

I think he is referring to accounts that were originally signed up for within the first few months of the iPad introduction when, at that point, ATT stopped allowing people to signup for it.

Though there were cases of other people getting accounts in the years after that. Speculation that someone was creating "new" accounts within ATT for money.

That notification was sent to me specifically about my grandfathered original iPad data plan. Do you have more details on why it may not apply to us?

Same here. I hope that it doesn't apply to us, but I bet that it does: surely, they've made some provision for this buried in their terms and conditions.

I have had the original at&t unlimited data plan for the iipad since the very first ipad back in 2010. I dont think at&t or anyone knew how popular they would be. At&t stopped the unlimited data plan for the ipad 3 months later. From what i understand, they didn’t think ahead. The legal jargon in the original agreement didnt protect the company to raise the price. You think they would have raised it by now? Of course they would have. Its been 9 years! They did find a loop hole tho...they were able to throttle those using too much data on their grandfathered unlimited plans. Given the choice btwn throttling and raising prices...they would have raised the price if they could. They couldnt.

So the email they sent means they are illegally raising my monthly fee?

I too have an original unlimited data plan from 2010. The $5 increase does not seem to be too bad, at the moment. I think this increase is just the beginning. I foresee another price in a years time. This appears to be a move to have all the grandfathered ipad data plan holders to give up this data plan and move to their newer unlimited data plan. Similar to what they did with the grandfathered iphone data plan.

It seems like we would get something in return for the increase, like free tethering or at least the ability to use it without changing our TOS on our side.
