Interesting. Free to download but I don't like the $10 /month charge. Let me just pay one price once and have it forever.
I'm trying this for a month. It's missing allot compared to my Garmin Nuvi 850. The colorful maps are only available while a route is active, otherwise it looks allot like Google maps.
No lane assistance. POIs can be driven to or called to using the phone and added to favorites. Nothing really to special with this and maps are over the air.

This app has nothing to do with in-app purchases. For in-app purchasing the app has to cost money, this app is free. Instead, AT&T adds the monthly fee to your cell phone bill.
Personally, I like this model, and hope others adopt something similar. I have in-dash GPS in both my cars. The only time I need one is if we're on vacation and have a rental car. Instead of giving the rental company the money, I'd rather just "rent" the GPS data in an iPhone app while I'm on vacation. $10 a month is quite reasonable considering what some rental companies charge per day. It's probably not worth it if this was going to be your primary GPS app though.
Still i'd rather have an actual dedicated GPS unit. I guess this is ok when your in a pinch but if your one that would love to benefit from GPS then by all means get an entry level tomtom or garmin.

There's an additional problem related to this. It doesn't take much to be outside of a 3G service area in the US on AT&T's network. If you're constantly streaming map data to the phone through the network this creates a problem with phone calls. EDGE use and phone use can't exist at the same time. If you're streaming map data to AT&T Navigator then it's going to block incoming phone calls.
I use TeleNav as my primary GPS in my car (on my work-provided BlackBerry). If this software is identical, I'm definitely going to use it...at least until TomTom is released.
It doesn't stream map data. You download the full data for you route when initially plug in the destination info. The only time you need more data is if you deviate significantly from your original route.

Verizon Navigator pre-caches turn and notification screen data but also gives an option to have real-time maps. Those maps are streamed on the fly. The one time I used streaming the application warned that unless you have a data plan you're charged for transfer of the map data. That shouldn't be an issue with the iPhone but the ability for real-time maps was there.
See my comment just above my last one. EDGE use blocks phone calls. You can have one or the other but not both. If you're streaming map segments you can't receive phone calls while that's going on. If you're traveling at highway speeds that could be a lot of segments. It doesn't take much to be outside of a 3G area on AT&T's network so the risk becomes high that you'll lose phone calls in favor of mapping data. This is where applications with pre-loaded maps win out. There's a lesser risk of losing phone calls to traffic/local data updates but areas with traffic data available probably have 3G as well.
I think the point of the subscription model is to only subscribe when you need it... out of town for work, vacation etc.
I kind of like the idea of being able to buy month to month. I'm traveling east tomorrow and was wondering if I should spend the money and get the G-Maps East version since TomTom/Garmin/Navigon, etc aren't out yet. The AT&T app - though seemingly far from perfect - will be a nice bridge between what I have now and future apps.
