Yup I just got the same one expected ship is May 28 - Jun. 7, 2021. I guess they weren't expecting that many pre-orders.... Or Space Grey is way more popluar. I'll be honest I buy the dark colors so I don't get blinded by the start screen. I had that happen enough....lol

This will be the first iPad I've purchased since the first generation in 2010.

That one was stolen from a break-in at my office, and my insurance replaced it with an iPad Air (they paid for whatever was current). The Air was stolen in a subsequent break-in, I vowed to never leave an iPad at the office again, and got a second gen 12.9" iPad Pro!

That's a pretty sweet upgrade plan but I think I'll just go ahead and buy a new one this time. ?

I have questions on how screwy their system was. I was on at 7:55 AM EST, and the 2 TB 12.9 inch was listed as sold out already. But around 8:30 AM it suddenly appeared as available (late May). Then other models began appearing and disappearing and, as far as I know, opening up new orders because of more inventory doesn't happen in half an hour. Very odd.

It’s not terribly uncommon for pre-order systems to limit the number of orders allowed in a certain amount of time.

It’s not unusual at all for there to be set times where more of the inventory is released, all the way through the end of the actual inventory.

Some of it is to make it appear that they had more inventory (doesn’t sell out in 15 minutes), some of it is to keep people at the storefront as often as possible, and some of it is to keep their ordering systems from being overloaded.

It’s not as bad as Best Buy though. There’s no delivery date… received order confirmation at 7:07ct. I’m honestly betting on the AirTags situation. Some got there’s 2 days before official release date, but who knows.. could get it in June.

Only reason why I went BB route… I had gift cards.

The problem with that strategy is that some people will go there, see "sold out" and say "screw it, another time perhaps." That seems like a good way to lose potential sales.

I mean, they're gonna sell out. Regardless. I can't imagine that's really a factor for them.

In terms of customer base, the folks who aren't eager and who will just say "screw it" will probably buy at a later date. But the sheer volume of angry folks who found out that pre-orders sold out in 10 minutes is another story.

I find it odd for them to sell out to, why not give a reasonable guess to a shipment date.. if it's later than what might be schedule then send an email regarding it. But just a message of sold out would definitely lose a potential sale as @Rafterman points out.

Problem there, AT&T, et. al. are at the mercy of Apple after the initial allocations run out. They can place an order for more but in my experience, at that point Apple prioritizes orders made directly from the Apple Store.

I totally get that… all these retailers are at the mercy of Apple. But look at Best Buy… they haven’t even gave a release date yet, just as we will ship it when it’s available. Absolutely vague on their part… but it’s a potential sale nonetheless.

why buy it from ATT instead of Apple? is there a difference?
According to AT&T’s website the difference is only if you’re financing the iPad Pro. Of your ordered the iPad Pro 11” 2TB cellular model from Apple, the monthly cost is $174.91/mo based on 12 months with 0% interest. With AT&T the same model is $70.00/mo based on 30 months with 0% interest.
