As a side question

Sorry a bit off topic...

Im thinking of getting one of the firewire external drives mentioned above for my PB. I want to back up the whole system on the external and also want to boot from it. My PB HD is 100GB. Should I just get a drive thats around 100GB or do u recommend getting something bigger (to accommodate ur changing needs)? What has been your experience?

I can't decide between the Lacie mini, the macpower m9-dx, the owc's mercury and the G-technology G drive. They all look and sound great!

Something at least twice the size. I don't know exactly how the OS X system handles copying files but for the most part, when windows is copying a large amount of data, it tends to make a copy of some things in temp before it reaches its final destination. So if its anything like that, ull get a space error and no body wants that.

But I'm sure the mac gurus will come in and make a more technical analysis but I figured I'd give my opinion. :)

thanks!

Thanks for the posts. I'm looking for something a little more iMac G5 looking but those are some nice drives.

Do the Rosewill or OWC Mercury Elite Pro AL enclosures spin down when an attached powerbook is put to sleep? I have a Macally FW400 enclosure that doesn't, and it's a hassle to have to turn on and off the enclosure as I wake/sleep the machine so I don't use it that much, but I also have a Western Digital external drive that does spin up and down with the computer and it's much more useful. Thanks.

I got this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1215795&CatId=0
It looks cool with the blue lights and is alumminum ti match the base of the iMac G5...(were it rests). Ther is a lso a model with no lights and a white version. It's $40. I popped in a 250gb HD and its awsome.

Thanks for the link! I liked the white version. I think it will go with my iMac well. Product discription says "now available in white, especially for Macintosh users". If not, Ill just put it on the floor.

Is your iMac sitting on top of the drive or is the drive sitting ontop op the flat part of the stand?

Since the original stated that he/she is looking for an external to go next to an iMac G5 . . . check out mine:

EDIT: I checked out that Metal Gear Box drive and personally think that the lights are WAY tacky, especially sitting next to somehting as great looking as an iMac. And I got the impression that Almighty's is sitting ON the iMac base. I personally love the way the base looks and would never want to cover it, especially with that drive. But everyone has their own tastes . . .

You might want to take a look at the drives from G-Technology. They use hard drives from Hitachi (good performance) and use fanless cooling. I have the 80gig USB 2.0 model and am very happy with it.
