So looking for an ATV. Probably the 3 now as its here and i would like 1080 etc ..

Anyway .. was looking at JB'ing for Plex and then i just found this firecore thing?

What is it and how does it work? - Will it stream MKV's from my Mac in 1080 to the ATV straight to the Movies app? - along with artwork etc?

What else does it give me .. I'm very new to this!

You cannot jailbreak the Apple TV 3. Depending on which CPU it is using, A5 or A5X, it could be a few months before a jailbreak is developed.

jailbreak aside as i know all the ATV3 jailbreak issues etc ..

hyperthetically .. lets say there is a JB and i had one in my house now (obvs i don't)

What does this software do? Basically a plex but integrated into the Apple menus?

As of now, it allows for VNC, Plex, XBMC, Weather, SSH, NAS access, modifications of the built in slideshow screensavers, and more.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B179 Safari/7534.48.3)

Can I watch my movies via the standard apple movies menu with it it I stream them in MKV format or will I have to use Plex?

you can stream them from your hard drive through the my files section added after you install the ATV flash, no need for plex or XBMC

But not via the Apple Movies section?

No, ATV Flash comes with it's own Media Player for non-iTunes formats under it's own menu. It also lets you install/maintain copies of XBMC and Plex (it also notifies you of their updates) as well as other select 3rd party addons.

It's kind of a one shop stop tweak for ATVs. I find it quite useful on my 2 ATV2s. YMMV

How does it pick them up from my Mac?

i.e. where does it find them all stored? - And does it work just as well as Plex?

All i want is to be able to stream all my photos from iPhoto, music from iTunes and blu ray MKV rips from my HD

it basically works like installing xbmc onto a computer, it is a separate app on the apple TV so to watch your movies from you need to start that app and use that apps interface, so at that point you are basically not using an apple TV you're using an xbmc TV.

to use the apple TV movie interface you would need to convert all your files, add them to itunes and then use home sharing to stream them to the apple TV.

another solution is to not use an apple TV at all, a WD TV live might be a better solution it will pick up any network shares and will play them or put all your movies onto an external drive and plug directly into the apple TV, you can then share that hard drive over your network (like a NAS) so you can add videos over the air without plugging the hard drive into your computer.
it will also stream your music and photos form any shared folders from any computer. (not ALAC though)

Check out their webpage, all your questions should be answered in a matter of minutes :) http://firecore.com/atvflash-black

Why do you say that? aTV Flash (black) comes with a media player that plays just about any format you throw at it.

the OP mentioned "jailbreaking for plex" in the original post, and as such a simple jailbreak doesn't include any pre-installed apps.

he then asked if you could play non itunes content via the built-in playback functions, the answer being no, so going on that basis, plex (or xbmc) would be required.

JB also allows for you to access the free cable plugin thru XMBC.

And plex or xmbc or any other program you install is added to the atv's "home screen" so you open it up from there and then have access to whatever features you add.

Also a note dont pay for a jailbreak season pass is free and I'm sure we'll see an update eventually for the atv3.

Yes, he did mention that when describing what he was doing when he came across a "firecore thing". Considering the thread is named aTV Flash, aTV Flash being a FireCore product, and he's talking about a software and describing what aTV Flash does, I assume his questions concern aTV Flash - not a jailbreak.

Yes i know how to Jailbreak .. that bits easy ..

i just wondered if aTV Flash meant i didn't need to use Plex ..

But in reality i guess i do really.

A JB ATV with a Plex App is probably my best bet so i think ill hold fire for a 5.0 JB with Plex :)

At least this way i can keep my ATV portable and use it at friends.

Thanks guys!

I'm an aTV Flash user and find it very useful. I only use the included "Media Player" which makes use of the Apple TV UI and you can simply add some of the folders that contain most of your media (movies, tv shows, photos or music) and you can easily stream them all to the apple tv. No need for plex or xmbc. The included media player also downloads metadata from the internet to get some information about the media files, which is very convenient.

Do you wanna make me a video so i can see it?

What is it that you want to see? Did you check out their webpage that I linked to earlier?

the interface .. how you navigate to their menus without using Plex and there use of META data etc

Why don't you just click the link I gave you in my first post to you? As I said then, all your questions should be answered in a matter of minutes.

Bit i take it with this and home sharing or however it works i couldn't pick it up drive 10 miles to my mums and then plug it into her wifi and watch my stuff like i can with myplex?
