I don't like posts that start with "I just got word from a reliable source," but this does make sense to me. I would like this if it was a nice ATV:MacMini hybrid.

The lack of a considerable update to both the ATV and Mac Mini hints to a possible collaboration of the two.

You know, adding a ATV interface to a Mac Mini powered machine in not unfeasible.

i think your forgetting that the ATV already is a Mac Mini hybrid!!

just a lower powered one :D

I really don't think Apple would expect people to pay $500 just to watch their purchased media on their TV. I think the Apple TV offers a good balance between price and performance.

I don't really see this as being true. If it is, I'll be surprised. A physical switch to determine if the mini starts up in a certain mode? Seems really out there to me. I think they'll either keep the current model or offer another version altogether at a similar, maybe slightly higher price.

I think this would annoy the hell out of existing ATV owners as apple will basically be saying "your current ATV is obsolete, here's the new one... twice the physical size and twice as expensive!"

Also, MacMini owners would already have all the functionality of the ATV on existing Mini hardware if Apple just updated FrontRow! Although i wouldn't want them to mimic the ATV software exactly as it's got serious issues...

I can't imagine this is true; although i can't help feeling they should have gone down this route in the first place...

Actually, as a current ATV owner, I understand that technology marches on. If Apple becomes static and doesn't improve its products, it will die as other companies catch up.

Having said that, I would expect Apple to possibly add dedicated media capabilities to the Mac mini, but to retain the ATV as a lower-cost option, much the way that it keeps the Shuffle and Classic in the iPod lineup.

I don't see this happening at all. What about people with an iMac and laptop already? They are not going to buy a mini. If anything happens, I think they will refresh the ATV in some fashion, but definitely not merge it.

reliable source indeed - how many of those do we wish we all had.

I'm an industrial / product design student, and keeping a close eye on apple alongside my education so far is telling me this: This is utter bollocks. The cost alone would be prohibitive and move Apples target market way up the scale from basically everyone that can operate a tv and has itunes to mac enthusiast. The two points in the market are VERY far apart.

I just got word from a reliable source, that they ATV will be discontinued in favor of a new version of the mac mini.

This new mini will also act as an ATV. Apple's research team has realized that it makes more sense to combine the two. they've noticed many users opting for the mini as a media device instead of the ATV

This new mini will have some sort of switch that will let the owner decide if box will startup as a mac or ATV. That way if owner likes the ATV, having it switched to that startup mode will prevent them from having to interact with a mac desktop, and vice-versa.

Photo Leaked

Here is a photo I got from a reliable source. It's the switch on the back of the new Apple Mini/ATV that, according to the original poster, "will let the owner decide if box will startup as a mac or ATV. That way if owner likes the ATV, having it switched to that startup mode will prevent them from having to interact with a mac desktop, and vice-versa.'

Really? If every rumor were true, this site would be called MacFacts. It's a rumor - OP did nothing wrong here with his/her speculating.

I would look back the OP’s post history before being so quick to defend him/her. There appears to be a trend developing.

I can definitely see the ATV getting discontinued. I can also see adding the functionality to the Mini.

However, this would would apple admitting total defeat in the living room. Nobody is going to pay $500+ for a TV box anymore, not when people can get a $100 roku or $200 360 or $300 ps3.

Apple has continued to botch the living room miserably, so I don't put it past them to do something this stupid...we'll see...

Who cares? We're entitled to our opinions.

Sure we are entitled to opinions and predictions, but they must be stated as such.. This whole ridiculous claim about "dual-personality Mini with a switch" was presented as a rumor from presumably a legitimate source with inside Apple knowledge. Let me show you what I mean:

Opinion: I think/wish/desire/hope that Apple discontinues ATV and releases dual-personality Mini
Unsubstantiated Claim: According to my reliable source, Apple will discontinue ATV and release dual-personality Mini.

You see the difference?

The OP has no track record of valid Apple inside info/rumors. And therefore neither him/her nor his "reliable source" have any credibility to me. In fact, this whole thread is a waste of time, I can't believe it's spilled into 2 pages now.

Who cares? We're entitled to our opinions.

Wrong! The last thing I want to do is read through a bunch of posts from a bogus thread that someone decided to start on a whim.

Imagine I posted something like "I heard from a relaible source that Apple was donig away with Firewire on all 2010 Macs" just so I could go back in a couple days and laugh at the sh*t storm I just created.

This sort of behavior is petty and unwanted in these forums.

If this was the intention of the OP then thats pretty weak in my opinion. However if there truely is a possibility that this unlikely marriage will happen then I'd entertain the idea.

Whatever the case I hope Apple does something soon as I'm egerly awaiting a mini or ATV update for my HTPC needs. I check the Apple store site daily in hopes to snatch up a 2.0 ghz / 9400m mini refurb to get my plex on.

Interesting rumour, I don't understand why it needs a switch and seperate product.

Just incorporate the software as an application in os x and run it as an application, then have an option to have the application run on login or machine boot, same as mce

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, as I stated in my post, but this is not what the OP's post is about. And it is against Forum rules. I'm not the Forum Police by any means, but I don't think this OP should continue to post out and out lies to stir up discussion. Somebody might actually believe him...

ATV is a ****ing dog and has been complete flop so far. I know all of you guys and gals like to drink the kool aid. But ATV is a POS. 40GB. Are they kidding? What is this 2001?

Haha, it does seem to be made of parts laying around from '01 for sure but I've had mine since it's inception. Liked it at first, hacked it to add external storage and ability to play all kinds of formats, now I love it. Never had a problem with it. Super easy to use for my not so tech savvy wife :)

Wooo things are getting heated in here. Nothing wrong with debate, but calling someone a lier seems a little harsh, even if their a kid trying to get attention.

Can anyone categorically stand and say that this is a lie and has evidence to show that?

Should I feel bad that my 40GB AppleTV has ~99% of its usable hard drive capacity empty, yet I use it everyday? Personally, I hope they do away with it and replace it with a smaller SSD for buffering.
