Unfortunately, although my tv has component outputs (that is all that I use on the tv) it does not have a 16:9 mode. The Apple TV doesn't support 4:3 because Apple would have to either redesign all the menus with 4:3 in mind or distribute another set of menus just for 4:3.
Not to mention the fact that you couldn't download rentals because you're not connected via HDMI.
Again, seems like a lot of extra work for something that's on its way out.
Additionally, the Apple TV doesn't have composite or coaxial output. So chances are if your analog TV supports component input, it has a 16:9 mode. So, although not ideal, you could use the Apple TV in that mode.
The iPod/iPhone supports 4:3 because it has no on-screen menu interface, and it's output is much simpler.
This topic was supposed to be about how awesome the Apple TV. So I say we get back on topic.![]()
If I can get a cheap mac mini (very unlikely) or get a usb ir receiver for my old extra iMac G5, I may go that way. I would really like to keep everything Apple, but they are making it hard. At least Front Row runs on a Mini or iMac or Macbook and displays perfectly fine on a 4:3 tv via S-Video (my a/v receiver does up conversion). And Front Row may actually be a better interface for my needs anyway.
