The Apple TV doesn't support 4:3 because Apple would have to either redesign all the menus with 4:3 in mind or distribute another set of menus just for 4:3.

Not to mention the fact that you couldn't download rentals because you're not connected via HDMI.

Again, seems like a lot of extra work for something that's on its way out.

Additionally, the Apple TV doesn't have composite or coaxial output. So chances are if your analog TV supports component input, it has a 16:9 mode. So, although not ideal, you could use the Apple TV in that mode.

The iPod/iPhone supports 4:3 because it has no on-screen menu interface, and it's output is much simpler.

This topic was supposed to be about how awesome the Apple TV. So I say we get back on topic. :)
Unfortunately, although my tv has component outputs (that is all that I use on the tv) it does not have a 16:9 mode.

If I can get a cheap mac mini (very unlikely) or get a usb ir receiver for my old extra iMac G5, I may go that way. I would really like to keep everything Apple, but they are making it hard. At least Front Row runs on a Mini or iMac or Macbook and displays perfectly fine on a 4:3 tv via S-Video (my a/v receiver does up conversion). And Front Row may actually be a better interface for my needs anyway.

I didnt know that. You mean, if I hook up tv via composite, I won't be able to watch rentals?

I thought at one point rentals required HDCP, which is only available via HDMI. However, maybe you only need HDCP to view the digital signal and can still rent movies via component?

Stud you beat my by 3 days you MOTHER F&#$@%

I kid I kid. Apple TV is the **** and I just got mine working today.. but I should have had it before you.. unfortunately I spent 25 dollars on a HDMI (cause i didnt want to wait for it to get shipped to me so I bought it in a store) only to find out that my chitty chinese hdtv doesnt receive audio over HDMI (WTF!!!). So the same night i found this out I ordered a full component with RCA audio off amazon for 7 dollars with shipping. It works PERFECT.

Lesson learned I suppose, patience me....

Anyhow at the same time my Airport extreme was acting up in N, losing signal, apple said it was interference and I don't have warranty. I was pissed so I set it to G and it worked fine.. but video would chop on ATV after 15 seconds.. So i did more work.. moved shiiit and set to N+B/G and some other settings and it works perfect..

no streaming problems..
much more convenient..

I used to be such an ATV hater.. For no reason.. just like those fools who bash vista.. no reason. ATV IS AMAZING!!!

(i also got 40 gb and I only stream, w00t)

I think he was talking about the movies themselves. Nothing will ever replace Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca" or Bogey/Bacall in "To Have and Have Not" or Dick Powell in "Murder My Sweet". These (and many, many others) were filmed in glorious black & white 4:3 and are not going away. No matter how hard you try you will never replicate great film noir in color and widescreen. Yes we are in the minority but classic film lovers we are, and classic film lovers we will remain.

Maybe you should try a projector plus a super panamorphic lens, 2.35:1 widescreen and a set of powered drapes. You can then have the screen easily fit the movie and lose nothing regardless of the aspect ratio.

I simply use a regular 16x9 screen that is 93" and regardless of whether the movie is 4:3 or even 2.35:1, it's still huge and still looks great with a Panasonic HD-LCD projector such as this PT-AX100U one (no color shift with black and white films what-so-ever. It looks like it's a black and white projector on-screen to my eyes). Casablanca looks great. So does newer movies like The Matrix.

I'd love such a setup, but cost and space are my limiting issues. I don't have space for a widescreen flat panel (it would have to be at least 65" to get the same height as I currently have), much less a 93" projection; the 50" 4:3 tv I have now takes up all of the space that I have. I think I have decided to try using an old spare iMac G5 running either Front Row or MediaCentral on my current tv; the one remaining problem is what to do for a remote, since the old iMacs didn't have remote IR sensors.

My 93" screen simply drops down from the ceiling between two book cases with blackout drapes behind that. When it's up, it doesn't take up any room. Total cost for my system (720P projector + screen) was about $2000 a year and a half ago. You can now get a 1080P projector for about that price.

Just received mine about 30 minutes ago. I have it up and running! I really only wanted it for the music. I freaking love it. Love it. So easy to setup. The only problem is waiting for all of my music to sync up.

So far I am extremely impressed with it.

Why would you want your music to sync when you can just stream it off your Mac or PC. The ATV hard drive is too tiny for syncing, regardless, IMO, unless you have a tiny library. I stream off a 500GB hard drive and there is no wait time. I have multiple ATV units and they can all demand different music at the same time even (My iPod Touch can directly control any of them with the Remote app).

Studaero69, it would be cooler if you could run your setup minus the notebook. Like, having all your media on the external hd connected to the AEBS connected to the appletv.

Hmmm... I only have a 40gig hard drive on the apple tv. How do I get the music to stream? The only way I could get the music to be seen was to sync it. What do I need to do in order to have it stream? I have well over 180gigs worth of music. When I look at the Apple TV under iTunes it is showing all of my music under the music section. The music is grayed out so I can't edit it. Does this mean it is streaming or does this mean it is stored locally on the Apple TV?

Trust me I want it to stream my music. Right now it is all showing up after I have synced it. Is there something else I need to do?

I have all of my music stored on a server that is feeding my both Macs in the house and I was hoping to have it feed the Apple TV.

choose custom sync under the syncing options. this will allow you to sync what you want and then you will be able to stream the rest of you itunes content
