In reality, I was complementing you by saying that you have mastered, "classical conditioning." As such it means that you understand quite well how to persuade people to respond to your posts or threads. :)
Sorry. I thought that was a insult.

Definitely don't want auto mode when you want to play with depth of field. There are times I'll use aperture or shutter priority mode but generally just use full auto on the phone.

It’s like the difference between a microwave meal and cooking a meal. Both give you dinner, but one gives you an experience and dinner.
I think it's a bit more like the difference between cooking for yourself and ordering food as take-out from a restaurant. Not that there's anything wrong with take-out - it's usually good enough, and it is faster and more convenient. If you make it yourself it'll take more time and effort, but you can really fine-tune the final product. You can definitely screw it up worse than ordering out, but you can also make some things that you won't find on any restaurant menu, and as long as you have your knowledge and some basic raw ingredients, you can make it even if there's no restaurant available.

But more than that, people look down on "auto" mode because it's a bit of a waste. If you have a high-end camera then there's a lot of functionality that won't be tapped into by the auto functionality. Choose any analogy you like: it's like buying a box of crayons with 96 colors and then coloring only with the primary colors; it's like buying a vehicle that can go off-roading and then only ever driving on the tamest of roads; it's like traveling to a foreign country and then sticking to all of the restaurants and places that emulate your home country. Maybe it's what you're looking for, but you probably could have gotten that with less effort and less expense.

AUTO - Always Use The Other mode
It is well known that “A” is amateur mode and “P” is professional mode (an old joke)

Use whatever you want…not what others think what you should use. Their opinion and $2 will get you a large coffee at Starbucks. The important to get the photo as you envisioned it. Remember, YOU took the photo. That said, also critically review and experiment. It is part of the continual learning process irrespective of skill level. What would be the impact of altering aperture, shutter, composition angle, etc.
