I don't know how I'm doing anything wrong, if I am, but my new AirPods Max simply suck at auto pairing. I'll be on my Mac, and decide that I want to listen to music. I grab my APM and put them on. I hear the pairing chime right away, but when I play music, it comes through my Mac's speakers. I have to go into the bluetooth menu and click on APM before the sound comes through the headphones. I have no idea how to get it so that my APM just play music without doing the extra menu dance.

Those Apple custom chips are VERY overrated!

Thanks for anyone who can help fix this.

It's nothing to do with the Apple custom chips or even AirPods Max. I've had issues with regular AirPods pairing between iPhone, iPad and my Intel Macs. I think it's an OS issue with Apple devices. Half the time on my iPhone if I just open my AirPods case and put one in my ear it won't pair. I find if I open it then pause for about ten seconds before I close the case and put it in my ear that sometimes helps but obviously that's not going to do anything for the AirPods Max. I sometimes have to do what you mentioned and manually connect on my AirPods Max.

I find that if they get too crazy deleting them from your saved Bluetooth devices then resetting the AirPods so you can pair as new helps. At least with the regular AirPods. I haven't done this with my AirPods Max.

This is one case where it doesn't "just work" 🤣

I had an older iMac and auto pairing was hit or miss. My phone kept grabbing it away from my comp. I had to set it manually most of the time. When I got a new MacBook Pro, pairing worked perfectly. I think it depends as much on the thing you're pairing to as it does the AirPods themselves.

I have a MacBook Air, 2020, so not so old. It never pairs successfully with my AirPods Max.

Another reason why I’m glad I left the Mac and went all iPad Pro. AirPods auto-pairing works great for me. It’s truly one of the things that makes the Apple Tax worth it.

Not an option for me. I'm a die hard Mac user and have been since my first Mac SE.

Fair enough.

Funnily enough, my Windows PC mimics an Apple device when it comes to transferring the Airpods from my iPhone/iPad...it's surprisingly smooth, & that's with the Bluetooth chip on the motherboard. Always impressed me how well it works. Strange how Apple's own Mac computers are lagging behind with their own feature...

My favorite thing is that my AirPods like to pair with my Mac ... when the AirPods are inside the charging case and closed ...

So I'll be listening to something either with Mac's speakers or headphones that are plugged in and my sound will be cut off by AirPods that randomly connect to my Mac from halfway across the room in their case. Apple has no idea how to fix it. I've contacted them several times.

OK, you guy's are missing on how the software is supposed to work. If you have the "Pair with last connected device" in bluetooth settings enabled for your AirPods or recent Beats with the H1 chip it will then pair automatically and will play your audio. By default that setting is not enabled so after enabling it under INFO in Bluetooth settings it should work for you, does for me!

Looking in the Bluetooth preferences I see no "Pair with last connected device"" option anywhere.

Can’t speak for Macs, but this applies to iPhone/iPad…

Flip the AirPods lid or put them in your ears so they connect to your device > Settings > Bluetooth > My Devices > Click the “i” next to AirPods (assuming they’re ’connected’ by now) > Click on ‘Connect to this iPad/iPhone’ > Your two options are here…Select ‘Automatically’.

Hopefully yours was set to ‘When last connected to this iPad/iPhone‘, hence your issue.

I am talking about an AirPods Max, which has no case with controls. I'm also having issues with it connecting to my Mac, not my iPhone. It just does not do so automatically. I have to pair it every time. It's very disappointing.

I realise that. Just substitute opening lid with connecting your Max to your device (Mac).

I’m not sure on the settings for the Mac though so you may need to dig there, but by connecting your Max, more settings options are revealed.

A few people with Macs have mentioned similar issues.

This feature seems to work more consistently when only using an iPhone/iPad (it’s how I use them, without too many dramas).
I have both AP Pros and the AP Max. They usually pair automatically for me on my iMac, iPhone and iPad. But I do have occasional failures and that seems especially frequent with my iMac. They seem almost always pair with the iPad and iPhone. They also seem to pair pretty well with our Apple TV. Overall I'd describe it as a useful though imperfect feature.

Hopefully the new firmware coming out fixes these issues as stated in the release notes 😊

I think it's useful, just imperfect like a lot of bluetooth things? Or mac? Idk. But one of the reasons I moved to the APM from my Bose which were pretty decent, was that I got so tired of having to open the phone app, pick a device, fiddle with itunes and still it would play from my speakers... The auto pairing has worked perfectly for me w/ my 2021 MBP thankfully. Hopefully an update will improve it for you, when it works properly it's rly what easily makes the Apple tax worth it imo

The next time my AirPods Max pair successfully with my MacBook Air will be the first time.

Your Bose experience is my Apple experience. Absolutely horrible.

just because you don’t know how to use it, doesn’t mean it does work

LOL. Seriously? You think I'm pairing my Airpods wrong? Guess what genius, I can pair them. I have to every freakin' time I use them. Right now I put my AirPods Max on to re-start listening to music. I had them on an hour or so at most. I paired them then, and I had to re-pair them again now. Point out what I'm doing wrong or ****.

I listened to music on my AirPods Max (after pairing them yet again). Took them off for dinner time, and 30 mins later had to re-pair them again. Every single time I want to listen to music I have to pair these to my Mac. Worthless trash. I wish I were still in the 14 day return period. These headphones can't stay paired at all.
