I've switched it off on every device I use, it's so annoying. If my last connected device was my phone it will default to my phone even if my phone has been locked for a while and I've been using my Mac for hours. If I play something on my Mac and check my phone for a quick second the AirPods would automatically switch to my phone, super frustrating! Not what I want at all.

I think this feature would be useful and interesting if optionally instead of hard switching from one device to another they actually play both devices simultaneously, maybe with the spatial audio stuff mimicking the experience of having two devices playing at once out loud with speakers (except it's all simulated with headphones). An overhaul of the current control center interface that lets you control audio devices on your network would be necessary to get this working nicely.

That's likely the future of AirPods anyway given Apple's focus on building out an orchestra of Apple devices working together seamlessly. Choosing between no switching, auto-switching, suggested switching (a one tap icons pops up on the device you've just started using asking if you'd like to use the AirPods you're wearing), and multi-device audio is what I want.

I listened to music on my AirPods Max (after pairing them yet again). Took them off for dinner time, and 30 mins later had to re-pair them again. Every single time I want to listen to music I have to pair these to my Mac. Worthless trash. I wish I were still in the 14 day return period. These headphones can't stay paired at all.
Are there any other bluetooth devices listed on your Mac? Try removing them.

What is happening to you doesn't seem normal. I don't have APM but I do have APP and BFP and there is now issue with them.

I'll remove my AirPods and AirPods Pro from my Mac. We'll see if that helps.

Another weird thing I forgot to mention is that when I put my Airpods Max on, I hear the pairing chime, despite the fact that they paired to nothing, not my iphone or my Mac. I have to pair them to whatever device I am listening to. Every single time. They never auto pair.

Since I have Sony headphones and wireless earbuds I appreciate the auto pairing from Apple more.

I absolutely miss it 😢

I miss it too. My AirPods Max have never autopaired a single time. My AirPods Pro autopair all the time.

To anyone who gave up on auto-pairing weeks or months ago. It is significantly better since it launched. My pairing success in the early days was like 50%. Now it’s well over 80%. And if you only use an iPhone and iPad, it’s close to 100%. The Apple Watch and Apple TV bring my average down a bit. I can’t speak for the Mac cuz I dumped Macs a while ago (for the iPad).

Anyway, give it a try if you haven’t in a while.

One caveat, I‘ve been on the latest iOS 16 beta since early June so it’s possible some of the accuracy is due to iOS 16.

My MAX pairs without flaw, but my smaller headset, from Beats, does not even though they say it should.
