Hey, i just orded a Apple TV and it came today,
I have a few downloaded movies in .AVI format how do i put them on the Apple TV to play on a Sony Bravia 40" TV?

I would be very grateful if someone could help me, thankyou,

For what it is worth OP, use Handbrake to encode (AppleTV 2 preset) then use identify 2 to tag (add metadata) and add to iTunes.

The above works well for AVI's. If you have any DVD's you want to add you can rip them to your computer with Ripit then follow the same steps as above.

OK, so I've used the AppleTV 2 preset with handbrake. Add the file to my itunes library however I still can't play the file. It keeps spinning. Am I missing something? Plays just fine my my MacBook of course.

After trying many crapware AVI to iTunes programs, Handbrake works the best for me.

If the AVI needs to be joined i use Simple Movie X to join them first, then throw them into handbrake. You can also convert with it but handbrake is much faster for me.

Hi! I've been having issues with this too - for months and months since I got my ATV I was just exporting them from QuickTime which always worked fine..... until Lion. Well that's the only thing I can think of that changed... Every time I export now the movies are so glitchy! The sound is terrible and distorted and just generally total C**p.

Anyway - trying Handbrake now, had it installed for ripping DVD's anyway so giving it a go.....

Fastest and easiest way to play .avi on Apple TV

The fastest way to play .avi and .mkv on Apple TV is to use a remuxing software that just copies the video stream instead of re-encoding it, like Subler, MP4Tools or iFlicks.

I use iFlicks which repackages the MPEG4 (most .avi contains MPEG4 part 2) stream into the MP4 container, converts the audio to AAC and adds meta data (cover art, description etc), then adds it to iTunes. Conversation process takes 1-10 minutes depending on file size.

For MPEG4/.avi to work you need to enable it. See http://support.iflicksapp.com/entries/20242648-the-itunes-compatible-preset

I think MP4Tools also can remux .avi. Subler only handles .mkv

The only time I use Handbrake is if I want to re-encode a DVD.

On Lion, I use VideoDrive to convert videos using HandBrake. I never had a problem with out-of-sync voices. Using import method 6, my videos play on my iPhone4, iPad2 and black AppleTV. Subtitles, cover art and descriptions all work as expected, so I couldn't be more happy.

I guess this issue will be limited to this specific video. If you try another video file, it will work just fine. I hope, one day, all videos will be H.264 so conversions will be a thing of the past.

I agree much easier to jailbreak with seasonpass & load on atv flash black & your away can watch any format films.

As for someone saying they may want to watch them on their ipod/pad you can just use VLC for that.

I do use handbrake & do convert some films to mp4 but only when i am going away so i can take my ipad & atv with me allowing airplay of the films on to the hotel tv.

How do you use VLC to watch a movie on an iDevice? As far as I know it was removed from App Store quite some time ago... If you know how to get it back I'd be grateful if you want to share your knowledge :)

Ive had it on my iphone 4 for ages so when i got my ipad 2 it went on there. I didn't realise you couldn't get it anymore
