Hi,

Tried to play a .avi video on my MBA last night (having installed divx and xvid codecs).

Can see the picture and hear the sound, but the picture freezes regularly and I get the pixel-deformed-picture on a regular basis ????

Do I need to download something else to make it work ?

Is it just because the MBA is not "powerful" enough to handle such videos ?

Am I missing something (always a strong possibility) ? ;)

Thanks...

W.

I'm pretty sure all Macs aren't equipped to play AVI videos. I downloaded Perian to get the QuickTime codecs for most video files.

Guys... thanks for your inputs... exactly what I was looking for.

One more question: since I have already downloaded xvid and divx, is it a propblem if I download perian and flip4mac on top of those (or should I first remove them) ?

Thanks...

W.

I don't think it will cause a problem but to be safe I would uninstall them.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what can play .wmv files? Also, I have some dvd's burned on to the hard drive. What program can play these files?

Hi!

With Flip4Mac installed (as described here) you can use QuickTime Player to play .wmv files. Flip4Mac is a QuickTime component, so it "enables" QuickTime Player to play it. This makes .wmv files also play in Front Row.

As for your second question: by "DVDs burned on to the hard drive" you probably mean you have disk images or the DVD files on your hard drive. You can use the great (and free) VLC player to play these files. Get VLC here.

Hope this was helpful.

Yep, thanks. I'll give it a shot tonight hopefully. :)

Have installed Perian... works very well. Thanks for the advice...

Yep, flip4mac works on the wmv files. Now I have some "movies" *cough*Pixar*cough* on my drive that I can't figure out how to play. I downloaded vlc but that won't work. The file types in the "video_ts" folder are the standard ".ifo" and ".vob" file extensions. I can play them on my Vista laptop using Windows media player, but what works on OS X?

I highly recommend VLC Media Player

videolan.org

Best player available for all your different file types!

Play a VIDEO_TS in VLC

Hi!

In VLC, from the menu File, choose Open Disc…. Select VIDEO_TS directory in the window, that opened up and browse for the VIDEO_TS folder you want to play.
Make sure you have the option Use DVD menus checked.

Finally click OK to open the DVD. Now it will play as a regular DVD.

PS: If you like a movie, buy or rent it.

Thanks for the help. Ain't never used vlc before. I had to choose "open file" instead of "open dvd" but it works.

And yes, I buy them. I just have it "stored" on a different format for now. :D

I take that back

I know have Perian + flip4mac + xvid + divx installed, and still get a quite jumpy / pixelized picture when I play my avi files...

Anything else I should do to fix the issue ?

Thanks for your insight...

Use VLC!!!

Never mind divx and quicktime...

VLC does EVERYTHING

.mpg, .wmv, .mov, .avi, even .flv!!! And loads more. An essential download

VLC does do everything, but it does FLV poorly (you must watch without fastforwarding.

AVI is nothing more than a container for the video. More often than not, videos that pixelate while watching are WMV. Try changing the extension then run through flip4mac. Make sure you have adequate memory and speed for these videos, and WMVs are memory hogs.

To be clear: I should change the .avi extension to .wmv ?

Thanks...

DVD Player.app will also play VIDEO_TS folders
