Well…it was fun while it lasted! Sigh…
Kid wanted Facetime and apps requiring higher versions of iOS. So, after a few problems with cabling and computers and iTunes he's now running iOS 9.3.5.
My earlier comment about 7.1.2 shows my ignorance of the iPhone 4 series as he has a 4s which means he can run iOS 9.
Well…it's his device. I would have upgraded him yesterday when I had the phone at work, but I wanted to give him the choice. He's familiar with some aspects of iOS because he uses my iPad and has used iPhones in the past - but only to play games. After being firm on staying on iOS 6, you turned to a puddle of goo.
Yeah I knew your kid would want the upgrade. All popular apps need at least iOS 7 to function. It wouldn't make sense for you to get an iPhone for him, and he can't do almost anything with it apart from call and text. You might as well buy him a brick phone if so.
He has less than 4GB of storage, so you wouldn't have to worry that much of him downloading games and such.
Kids. At the end of the day you want to make your kids happy.
Hey at least you can FaceTime your kid now with no problems.
Does it work good? Thanks to the generosity of @128keaton there is an iPhone 4s in our house running iOS 6.1.3. Jailbroken!
My son turns 13 in October and he needs a phone and this one will be his. Unlocked Verizon phone. I have a T-Mobile SIM on the way.
I get to play with it and set it up a bit first though.
Already got his iCloud ID (through Family Sharing) set up as well as Restrictions.
Software Update Killer was the first tweak install.
I miss iOS 6!!!!

It's a little slow and some times there are hangs. If it was my device I would never have updated it.Does it work good?
It's a little slow sometimes and hangs some times until the CPU catches up. Too little RAM. That said, it functions fairly well and my son hasn't used iOS or an iDevice long enough to know there's even an issue. How well does 9.3.5 work on a 4S? Just asking, because I have NO interest in upgrading. Skeumorphia lives!
iPhone 5, Black/Slate with iOS 6. Had everything dialed in…then the battery decided to swell and the replacement was iOS 7! UGH!!!This was my favorite phone/OS combo Apple has made. After that the 6s plus mostly for screen size reasons.
Yeah, that was another reason I didn't object to my son updating the phone. I knew Facetime would be something he wanted to do.My understanding is that FaceTime is broken for iOS 6 now.
Edit: saw the later posts indicating this and that the phone has been updated
I would have given him my iPhone 5, but it's locked to Sprint and we're on T-Mobile.At least the kid could update to ios9.
Would have been sad seeing him trying all the apps he wanted and none worked and with no choice to upgrade.
My mother uses my old 4S and is on ios9 as well. It is slow, but I think is because I'm accustomed to my 6S and not necessarily the upgrade to 9. I think 9 is faster than 8 on it.

In any case, he's happy with it and it's serving it's purpose.
If he can prove he's responsible with it for a year, then next year when my wife and I upgrade to the iPhone "whatever it is" then he'll get my 6s+.
He's already had a classmate donate a case to him. We'll see if he decides to use it or not.
For a kid is more than enough and ios9 can run all apps he probably wants so it's a good one for him for sure.I would have given him my iPhone 5, but it's locked to Sprint and we're on T-Mobile.

It all depends on how he handles the 4s over the next year.Methinks, a 6s+ would a little big for him (but that's my feeling).
