I'm not a fan. And neither is the person sitting in front of me in the coffee shop. Or in dark rooms in general. I hope there's at least an option to disable it, as it's a waste of energy.

EDIT: users here have pointed to me that it's not a waste of energy, and that I did not understand how it works, as it uses the light used for the screen. I retract that part of my comment. Thank you for the explanation!

The rest of it stands: I do not like it better, but I'm one of the few here

I wouldn’t buy an Apple computer just because it had this feature and I wouldn’t NOT buy an Apple just because it didn’t. If I’m in a hotel room and leave the computer on to recharge at night then the light might annoy me a little, otherwise it’s a feature that I don’t care about one way or the other.

It’s not on when you close the screen

So they want a patent to embed a partially silvered and tinted mirror into a frame? (Edit: sounds a lot like they are 'inventing' sunglasses) As much as it is a patent for a lit up laptop logo, it seems more like it could be one post in a picket fence around what they want to do with an augmented reality display.

I'm fond of the lit up logo, and would like to see it make a comeback, but at this point I'm fine with or without it.

I'm willing to bet this won't happen - it just adds another failure point point for an already thin screen and it's no longer worth the risk. Sure, it looked cool back in the day, but things have progressed and the reasons it was abandoned are still in currently effect (even more so I'd say).

I will take "Features that do nothing for me, but consume battery life" for 500 Alex.

Apple could be considering a return of the iconic backlit Apple logo on future MacBook models, if a newly published patent is anything to go by.

Once a common sight in coffee shops everywhere, the glowing emblem of an Apple logo featured on the lids of many Mac laptops launched in the early 2000s, but its demise in 2015 could turn out to be relatively short-lived.

Filed by Apple in May 2022 and published last week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, a new patent summarizes various implementations of "Electronic Devices With Backlit Partial Mirror Structures," but the illustrated example leaves readers in little doubt about the specific use case Apple has in mind.
Patently Apple, which first highlighted the document, notes that three of the engineers listed on the patent only joined Apple in 2018, long after the backlit logo was dropped from Mac laptops, indicating that a different methodology is being described.

The first Mac laptop with a lit-up Apple logo was the third-generation PowerBook G3 launched in 1999, and the glowing symbol proved a mainstay through consecutive Apple notebooks for the next 16 years. The only change in that period was that the logo got flipped upright, so that it no longer appeared upside down to onlookers when someone was sat in public with the lid open.

In 2015, Apple began nixing the illuminated insignia from its laptops, starting with the ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook, which had a polished metal logo instead, like those seen on iPads. In 2016, a new generation of MacBook Pro models continued the unlit trend, and Apple hasn't launched a Mac laptop with a glowing logo since.

After the return of Magsafe which (or rather the lack thereof) was literally an argument for me to hold onto my dying Macbook Pro for longer than I realistically should have.... this is another of those "SOLD" features.

Yes, please, sign me up!

Now bring back more white bezels as well, pretty please. Back to the roots!

Please NO!!! Or at least make it able to be turned off, which would be possible as it would be no longer tied to the backlight.

I hated the way my old computer lit up my entire room behind it while working at night. Please don’t bring this back!

Maybe I’m getting old, but a glowing Apple logo does nothing for me. In fact, I would prefer no logo at all. However, since they’re going to do it, I would prefer an embossed logo in the metal itself rather than a black one.

In a dark room the logo was very dimmed because the screen was very dimmed. Aside from the fact that you really shouldn't be working in a completely dark room like that (room so dark and screen so bright that it would literally light up your entire room), your poor eyes...

Love the idea, but they will have flip the Apple logo again, so it is right side up when the screen is open - and this makes it upside down with the screen is closed!

You never watch TV on your laptop in bed?
