What do you guys think of Silverlight?

I have never had any particular problems with it, but really don't understand what exactly it is.

Apple allows Silverlight but not Flash?

Silverlight is worse than Flash. I stopped using Netflix online because of it. I'm sure the Ipad won't be using Silverlight and hopefully Netflix will drop Silverlight altogether. When I talked to a guy at techsupport he said the ONLY reason they are using Silverlight was because of the drm, it had nothing to do with it being a superior technology for delivering video.

not sure how this is 'backpedaling'

Maybe backpedaling isn't the best word to use. :)

It's not. But you have to realize that those that worship at the altar of Apple will interpret anything and everything as such.
I don't worship at the altar of Apple. In fact, I just recently started using Apple products after using Vista. It reminded me of Windows ME, another wasted OS. In fact, Microsoft knew Vista was so bad that they had to manipulate people into trying it by calling it Window Mojave. I've never heard of Apple denying their products like that...I'm just sayin'.

Anyway, since you're such a Windows fan, why are you on this forum? Are you in the closet about your love for Apple? :p

I do love that they approved the netflix app so the idiots that comment on engadget with comments like "It'll never be on the iphone cause then people wouldnt spend money in itunes and apples greedy" have nothing to say or will look even more ignorant when they dont even know that and still say it.

Netflix's streaming library is hardly a threat to iTunes current catalog.

...I don't worship at the altar of Apple...

Don't worry about it.

Anyone who uses phrases like "worship at the altar of Apple" looses any and all credibility.

That's a rumor that has kicked around for some time and it's never been tied to any real indication of truth. I think Steve's public show sitting outside with Eric Schmidt was a PR event to show that they don't completely hate each other.

I can't see them parting ways. It's closely integrated to the OS so much so that they have their own rules about how Google data is to be used. Developers would scream bloody murder if they lost their Maps API tie to Google.

Bing Maps are a lot better than Google Maps these days

Can you tell me exactly what you're referring to? YouTube (has dedicated app replacement), Hulu (impending app development/release, possibly subscription based), flash games (app store with 150K apps.. I'm sure there's something comparable), adverts (nothing needs to be said here), what exactly am I missing here?

i bet you don't have kids

Really? but those that call people windows lovers have more credibility? LOL

I didn't point the finger at anyone specifically. And I honestly have no problems with Windows computers or Macs. I use both daily. I don't experience issues with flash on EITHER system. I love to a lot on my Apple products (I have an iMac, Mac Book Pro and iPhone) and there are still some things I enjoy doing on my Windows machine.

I didn't realize you had to be exclusively apple and only talk them up to post on this forum.

I don't have credibility? Well - to be honest - the opinion coming from someone that would judge another so simply and quickly has no value or impact on me. So feel free to dismiss all my posts from here on in if it makes you feel better

Flash isn't just for ads or youtube like people like to think. I am in the Marine Corps and we have online training classes that use flash for their content presentations. The DOD uses flash for a lot of their online training.

If the iPad had flash support I could ditch my netbook for on the go training. Don't get me wrong, I have bought one but flash would have been nice to have.

This is interesting, I had no idea this is the case. Would a lot of other military feel the same? Does Jobs know this? I would think that the possibility of a big military contract might get him to relent on Flash. I think he likes making money even more than he hates Flash.

That's because if NetFlix and ABC are streaming H.264 videos, they just changed the "wrapper" from Flash to HTML 5.0. As such, any web site that streams H.264 video will soon be iPad compatible--including the popular Japanese anime streaming video site Crunchyroll.

No they don't. I responded to you, not them.

Are you really going to play the "I'm feeling persecuted" card? You don't have to be anything in particular to post here.

Credibility comes from thoughtful, intelligent responses. "Worship at the altar of Apple" is not a thoughtful, intelligent response. Its a juvenile dismissal that comes from the lack of anything smart to say.

That's your opinion. It's unfortunate that the description happens to be pretty accurate when describing some members of this forum. Now feel free to tell me that my assessment is completely without merit in regards to some posters on this forum. I think you'd be hard pressed to say it doesn't exist.

Of course its my opinion, I don't know you personally and this was an observation based on your post...how could it possibly be fact?

This has nothing to do with the overzealous nature of some people, this has to do with your method of describing them robbing your post of any and all credibility.

Allow me to illustrate further, which person would you take seriously?

"Fred** is a doo doo head."

"Fred isn't particularly smart."

How is this hard to understand?

** If your name is Fred, I wasn't talking about you.

Ok - my opinion is that the example you gave is a poor analogy. For one, "doo doo head" doesn't mean the same as "particularly smart" - it's ambiguous. It could mean Fred is mean. Or Fred didn't do something he was supposed to. Or a myriad of things. It's also language a very young person would say.

Worshipping at the altar of Apple was specific. It's also not something you'd hear a 4 year old say.

and sorry Fred - we're not making any personal attacks about you.

Yours was a poor choice of words, man up, accept it, and lets move on.

Thanks, because the original comment was directed at me and I really didn't appreciate it. :)

Blah - overgeneralization. You could easily say that the apple supporters who believe steve can do not wrong all use groupthink (sorry - your word was lemmings) and regurgitate this mantra "YouTube (has dedicated app replacement), Hulu (impending app development/release, possibly subscription based), flash games (app store with 150K apps) etc to justify why flash isn't needed.

If flash were available on the iPad and there was an option to turn it off - I don't think a SINGLE person would have a complaint.

People aren't clueless, my friend. Don't make sweeping generalizations unless it helps you sleep at night. A lot of people - and well educated people understand the situation very well. That doesn't mean they have to like it anymore than those that do. You're not special because you hate flash or don't need it. And those that do wish it was on the device to play their games, visit movie sites or whatever reason aren't stupid or LEMMINGS for wanting to do so.

But enjoy your bubble.

Ya, because you never making generalizations? (see below) Give me a break lol. You've shown yourself to be a complete joke on these forums.

It's all opinion, nothing more, get over it already.

It's not. But you have to realize that those that worship at the altar of Apple will interpret anything and everything as such.

For the record, yes I make plenty of generalizations because those are my opinions. Just like everyone else here, don't' act like your better than us and never do.

If you don't see the difference between saying "THOSE that worship..." which is very specific to a SMALL group of people vs a generic comment that ANYONE who raises a point about flash doesn't get it - then that's an issue you might want to work on.

ETA: "For the record, yes I make plenty of generalizations because those are my opinions. Just like everyone else here, don't' act like your better than us and never do." EXACTLY my point. No one is special here. We're all entitled to our opinions. So calling me a Windows fanboy or "hater" or any other name I've inaccurately been called is no different. No one leaps to my defense. And that's fine by me. But dare insinuate that someone is worshiping Apple and all's fair. Hypocritical at best.

This conversation is done - and should probably head to the wasteland because it's so far off topic now.

Back to topic...

With 2 large companies making themselves available to the iPad, how can others not follow suit? I think more companies will start making iPad friendly websites and videos.

:apple:

I can see a lot of other big tv channels coming out with their own Apps. Hulu has yet to been seen with an App yet or maybe there will just go with HTML5 version of their site. I would rather see Apps then web-based versions though.

NetFlix will probably be my highest used App. It will play movies all day for me while I am at work.

Hulu would be a nice addition too.
Must be nice that you can watch movies all day at work, I could never get away with that.

The apps will work for some of the bigger sites that can afford to make them but there are a multitude of other sites that will never have apps and will not be viewable properly on the ipad. The other problem is all these app makers start seeing the $$$ signs and want to charge subscriptions for otherwise free content that is available on the internet such as Hulu. I will never pay for anything that is otherwise free to use just out of general principal.

Anyone saying they don't want flash is just buying into the Apple hype because they don't understand just how much content will be missing. Many folks will realize it once they have the ipad in their hands and try to visit some of their favorite sites only to see they don't have the same content as they get on their desktops. Others might not notice at all because all they do is load up their homepage and go to youtube once in awhile but just because they don't need full web browsing capabilities doesn't mean they shouldn't have it or won't need it sometime in the future. To say you don't want flash when 90% of the internet is based off of flash is extremely short sighted. Regardless of what you say now you will want it at some point I can pretty much guarantee that.
