Mac Pro 5,1. I used to used to use Time Machine in Mohave. Was nice! But in Opencore patcher with Sequoia trying to restore a Time Machine backup using migration assistant all looked good until a popup at the end said to reboot Migration assistant to complete. It just kept looping. I had to wipe HDD and reinstall Sequoia with patcher. AI search says Time Machine will break the patches of Opencore, corupting Sequioa. "A known issue". AI recommended to turn off the patches then turn patches back on after Migration assistant finishes. Made no differencee. Still looped. Had to wipe and reinstall all again. I am able to drag and drop files fom the Time Machine to the computer, but that does not restore all the settings of Sequoia. A BIG JOB. Sometimes AI search is excellent instruction. Sometimes it is completely wrong. I guess I am going to ponder my next steps. My Sequoia runs beautifully with 95 % of my old drag and drop from Time Machine backed up apps now. I will be careful now with my next steps... I am hoping someone. can recommend a good backup and restore solution for us! Someone that has experience... Not just what they think will work.

CarbonCopyCloner <https://bombich.com/> free to use for 30 days, no restrictions, but well worth the cost.
Will work with OCLP backups too. Best to use SSDs as the Backup disk, but HDs will work.
Don't bother trying to make a real clone, the default back up is the way to go.
Suggest you read the Blog at the site, especially the "Bootable Backups" section.
I have no relationship with the company, just a very satisfied customer!

Will have to second the CCC recommendation. The only way I’ve ever gotten TM restores and MA to work on OCLP Macs is to uninstall root patches before running TM backups and before TM restores or using MA. Obviously this is super inconvenient having to manually run TM.

The developer at Bombich Software, Mike Bombich is the awesome one. He stays one step ahead of Apple, and has for several years, despite the many devious steps Apple has taken, each making the maintenance of a viable backup so difficult. There are few as honest, hard working and efficient as the whole crew at that company. Making it one that I firmly believe deserves the reasonable cost for their product. Over the years it has literally saved my bacon several times. I now keep at least 2 CCC backups at all times, using SSDs that provide the activation of Trim, via the UASP protocol.

USB devices will normally not have TRIM enabled, as it is only supported on a drive connected to a Thunderbolt port or an internal drive. However, if the UASP protocol is supported on the USB device, TRIM will work. The Crucial MX500 series has this UASP protocol enabled. To check if UASP is enabled on a currently connected USB devices, use the following command using the Terminal;
Code:
ioreg | grep UAS
or
log show --debug --last boot --predicate "processID == 0" | grep trim
log show --debug --last boot --predicate "processID == 0" | grep -e "blocks free in" -e "blocks trimmed"

All of the commands above show Trim is enabled on the Crucial MX500 SSD in a cheap Oracle clear plastic USB 3.1 enclosure. So the SSD does not slow down even after using it for several years.
Now that is awesome.
