Funny how people can see that differently. You think it's wasting money to own more than one device at a time.

I feel I don't get my money's worth out of the device (wasting money) until it finally dies of old age.

That's why I just sell the old device when I get a new one, or even just give it to a family member so that they can continue to use it. But if I keep a "backup" phone it's not going to do anything for me except sit in a drawer and collect dust. I don't know what I would use it for when I have a superior device that will do the same things.

An example would be my iPad Mini 4 which I felt became redundant when I got a 6th gen ipad. I managed to sell a nearly 3 year old Mini 4 for $350 CDN (about $266 USD).

Old iPhones either get sold or passed on to my mom, who between my and my brother's hand-me-downs has not actually had to buy an iPhone since the 3Gs.

Well apparently I now have a "back-up" phone since I picked up a brand new SE yesterday on Clearance. Don't know what to do with it yet but I guess I'll figure it out.

Shouldn't be surprising that most people have older phones sitting around. I keep mine after my contract ends just in case anything happens with my current phone. I only have one stored away though, not a couple like some people, as I prefer to get rid of really old ones. It's just peace of mind I guess. You hope you never have to use it but it's there just in case.

Besides two XS Max, I guess I have a backup phone.

2 SEs sitting in a drawer that I haven't used in about a year, 6S+, 6S, 7+,8+, Note 9, Note 8, S9+, 2 S7 Edge sitting in a drawer.
U r kidding?
Why would u wanna have $3000-4000 in phones without any use?
It would be cheaper just to buy the newest bling bling maxed out anything in case of need...

But money doesn’t seem to be an issue for u:)

I have a spare XS and XS Max for backup of the regular ones, 2 X's (gave one away to a friend who needed it), and then a lot of the older gens too long to bother to list. I usually don't need to use the backups much but I have in rare instances. The XS's, X's, and an 8 have sims ready to go with active service should I need to jump into a phone right away. The XR is actually the only one I don't have a spare for right now. Been meaning to pick up a White one though.

Most of those phones are promotional for me but I do own outright one of each as well, the XR being the only one I don't have a promo version of. The phones were paid for and I tend to not bother with re-sale much as they are my devices and I prefer to keep them so it is what it is for me, however that may appear to others.

I didn't pay for two of the XS Max unlocked phones, the other two are financed through AT&T on my two lines. I'm far from rich.

I usually sell my phones to family members so I keep the old phone for a couple of weeks to make sure the new phone is good. Then I’m down to one phone.

I've been trying to sell my 8+ and 7+ on Craigslist for about the last 4 months with no luck. I'm thinking if going the Cult of Mac route and letting them buy them. They're offering $365 for my 8+.

I also have two SEs that I barely used sitting in a drawer. I tried selling them on Craigslist and had no luck as well.

I have an SE which I take with me while I travel. It will be the BU if my XS ever gets damaged or quits working for whatever reason. I'll just swap the sim into the SE.

This is exact use I have for my SE. But although now that I have the Xs and it supports eSIM, I don't really need to take the SE with me overseas.

I probably should just sell the SE, but it was/is my favorite designed iPhone.

You know, there are people, who buy hand polished aluminum rims for their cars, maybe another four, spare, for winter use...
I do not want to know the price of that stuff. Lets say: If you are lucky enough and can afford it - do it ;)

My son-in-law has family in Colombia and they are thrilled to buy my hand me downs. I do keep them in nice condition and charge them like a Best Buy trade in rate. So both sides are happy.

I have a backup SE and a Galaxy S9 just encase I'm feeling like some Pie.

I've only wished I had a backup phone once since the original iPhone. A few weeks ago the logic board on my phone died and I couldn't get to the store right away to get a replacement. Survived just fine on my Apple Watch (with LTE) for a few days.

Never had the need for a ‘back up’ phone. I do however, have a secondary work phone.
Yea, my work phone can forward to my iPhone if I want but I only do so when on the road. I have a land line but it's never for me so I let my wife deal with that.

Otherwise, I still have my 7 Plus. If my XS needed repair or was lost/stolen, I could have AT&T reactivate the 7+ in a few minutes by dialing 611 from any AT&T phone, land line or cell, or through the web site while I waited for the issue to be resolved.

Had upgraded my previous iPhone 6 with a new battery last year (with the Apple special rate) and use it now as my backup phone. It has my second SIM card for this. Try to recharge it every several months to held the battery in good condition....

I have a Nokia Lumia 1020 with offline GPS that has saved me on my travels a number of times when I've had no signal or service to use Apple Maps or Google Maps on my iPhone. The maps still get updates too.

I know there are iOS apps with offline maps and Google Maps has this feature (which failed me when I needed it), but offline navigation should be standard for these premium flagship phones.

I have a back up phone. I keep it stored brand new in the box at the Apple store. I sell my old phones or give them away. These days with how you just restore from iTunes or iCloud it is so easy to set up phones.

I have a 6s in the drawer, but I'm not 100% sure I actually need it. *shrug*

I have came to the conclusion that I like having one android phone and one iPhone.

I came to exactly the same conclusion, there’s a few apps I use that either don’t work (or word badly) on iOS so I have an Android phone as well.

I have 2 sims though, both are cheap deals so keep a sim in both.

I do also have an SE I use as a music player.

I see a LOT of people on here talk about buying backup phones. How often do you come to a point you actually need a back up? Or by backup do most of you simply mean secondary phone?

I keep an Android device so I can keep abreast of the system. I guess that is kind of a backup phone because I will carry it every once in a rare while.

With the eSIM and T-Mobile Digits, all of my numbers are in one phone now.
