I just read this:
so basically iXpand would randomly rename all photos and videos. Then how can any human put the photos and videos back to the original order and find out if there are any missing photos or videos that haven't been backup?

Let's say I go to a 10 days trip and take 1000 photos, then all photos and videos names become random, how do I know which photos are in day 1? I recall memory for 1000 photos with 1 hour time renaming all photos again?

by the way iXpand is not cheap at all, much more expensive than normal usb drive.
Er… its like me saying iPhone is not cheap at all, much more expensive than an Android.

For instance, the iXpand 128GB costs USD$41.8. Whereas a SanDisk 128GB USB-C OTG costs USD$19. More than double the price but Apple certified accessories have always been more expensive. Unless its for an older model accessories vs new Android accesorries.

I'm all about being thrifty but $2.99/mo ($2.90 after the $.09 in Daily Cash I get for it) for 200GB of iCloud storage and the peace of mind that every photo I take is automatically backed up and available on every other device I own seems pretty darn good to me.

Er… it has been fixed…

well the photo name counter can go to 9999 only then back to 0001, then how can it make sure it wouldn't auto backup my new 0001 in phone and replace the old 0001 in my computer if it doesn't change the name? LOL

Do they really fix it? I read Amazon comments and never see anyone saying it has been fixed.

I wish i could use iCloud but i cant. Why? Internet in Indonesia sucks. Like seriously… if i took 10 photos of my baby its gonna take forever to upload to iCloud.

Makes a mess of your file names and dates

The device is easy to use, but it made a mess of the files on my phone and my hard drive. The photos are now difficult to use. While this device technically transfers files from my iPhone 8 to a USB drive, the file names are changed to gibberish, the dates of the files on the device AND the phone were changed, and there was no option for which file format was transferred. If I email a file from the phone, I receive a jpg file. If I use this device, I get an HEIC file which requires additional software to decipher. Neither Windows 10 nor Photoshop recognize that file format. I purchased this device so that I could remove files from my phone to free-up space and also back-up the photos, but I have such a mess that I am not sure what I can delete and I need to find a way to open the files. There should be a better way to transfer files from an iPhone and preserve the file names, dates, and formats.

Hmmm… i used to be a photographer, i would make folders. For instance Bali,Jakarta,Singapore,Hong Kong and so on. So in the end numbers dont really matter. But i will have to test that out.

you must be rich in Indonesia then, your 3 phones are much more than average annual salary over there.

I take photos almost everyday for family, so if photos become randomly string then there is no way I can tell which photos were taken on which days.

For android, it is easy just plug in windows computer and photos are there in the same folder. For iphones, there are many folders and the phone would keep making new folders. Some android phones would use date and time to name the files which make life much easier. Iphone is just 0001 to 9999 then repeat again which is nightmare if someone takes a lot of photos.

Ah now i remember. On my N20U it would save as IMG_thedate. Right. Now that makes total sense. I suggest you use iCloud then?

I didnt buy them all at once lol. And especially now i have a 6 month old baby…

lol you will know which I mean when you take a lot of photos for your baby everday and the 9999 counter become 0001 again and again....you will have like three 0001.jpg which are different photos...with like 200 folders...

I have free paid version of google drive since I am alumni of somewhere but it is not a long term solution.

Thank God my wife is the one taking all the photos… i do too but not as extreme as her lmao. She has like 15000 photos and 3000 videos or something. Its haywire.

Try iCloud. It should be good enough for you. I cant wait to use iCloud when 5G is here… or when 4G is stable.

Er… it has been fixed…

I read latest comments of few iXpand models in Amazon, I don't think they have fixed it at all, no one mentioned it has been fixed and just angry about the random string make they have no way to deal with the photos and videos, lol....

I can't imagine ever having to physically plug my phone into something to get my photos backed up... That seems like 1990s technology / usage.

I take a photo, on ANY device, and within seconds it is available on EVERY device I have with no effort or action on my part. If I'm out and about taking photos, they're being backed up as I'm taking them so if I lose my phone or get robbed, all my data is safe and secure.

I have my almost 100GB photos database synced (originals) to my 1TB MBP internal disk and backed up via Time Machine to an external drive as a secondary backup.

I just can't imagine having to PLUG in my device to back it up anymore - I've been using cloud backup for many many years now.

Can't tell you how many people I know (IT experts themselves) who lost data cuz they hadn't "plugged in" to back up for sometimes years when their phone/device died. It's 2021 folks.

Anyway, before I got smart and used Google Photos and then iCloud, I used iMazing on Windows to back up my iPhone to an external drive. It was just time consuming and annoying, which is why I moved on. Time is worth $.

they you better use icloud then lol...but big size version like 200gb, 2tb is really not cheap

I may finally buy NAS, synology may has reasonable solution.

Cloud for countries with good internet yes. Try doing that in Indonesia with standard internet,it will fail half way. Or get stuck. So it actually depends on the persons location. And for example if i wanted to use cloud,i would need a USD$420/month dedicated internet ISP installed in my house and in my office. For on the go cloud would just stink straight up.

OK, yeah, if I was in the middle of the California Desert with no access to electricity or the internet and I was using solar panels to charge my phone and my laptop - yes I guess then I'd probably use my Mac to back up my photos - or iMazing if I had a windows machine. :)
