I have several high quality cables from years ago that can’t do 4K 60. Let alone 2560x1440 at 144. So I need to get special HDMI cables that match a specific version number to get those higher resolutions and refresh rates. And some of my cables don’t work with M1 that are too old but the work on my game consoles.

It must be really old, since 4k has been supported since version HDMI 1.4 (2009).

No. I can’t use an HDMI cable from 10 years ago and get HDMI 2.1 features.

And at my workplace one of our conference rooms has a pair of cables running through the wall since it was converted to a conference space in 2006, those are now hooked up to a pair of 4k60 4:4:4 displays with no issues, because TDMS (how HDMI signals actually work) doesn't give two hoots about the cable, only the source.

4K 30hz is fine, but not 60 Hz. And I can only go to 60 Hz on several of my old cables even at 2560x1440.

The only difference it makes, is the wire gauge for longer length.

FWIW, I ended up getting a new monitor... a nice 3440x1440 ultawide. I love it. Not sure what I'll do with the old 4k yet. But I have zero issues now. The Mac is responsive now, too. No screen artifacts at all. Looks great.
