The sky is not falling, but the API is deprecated and I know of exactly NO instances where that's happy news. 'Twas a great app, until what will now be a tortuous denouement to continuing users. Enjoy.

It looks like the API is being deprecated in favor of a newer API with some added features (primarily focused on security). So the onus would be on developers to update their apps accordingly.

I'm tired of Apple handicapping the OS. Need to enter password or touchID for MANY things, and now for Bartender 4 it's letting me know my screen is being shared. Like it's a problem or something... only if a third party is doing it. Sigh. I get the reason they do it, but there should be an option in the system settings for advanced mode where it just won't show you these pointless things. I love the OS and its wonderful, just would love an advanced mode without notifications for screen sharing, mic sharing, camera sharing, location sharing, everything sharing, lol.

did you read thru the thread? this has nothing to do with 'handicapping the OS'...

I read through the thread.

When I give permission to an app in the privacy section to enable reading my screen, or full disk access, etc. and it STILL has to notify me on my menu bar where I’m actively trying to hide icons as with Bartender 4 then yes to me it is handicapping it. Also when macOS decides to bring up a notification telling me a third party app is running in the background and at startup… mind you these only ever happen for third party apps, not Apples own. I have no problem with them doing these things, but currently there is no option to let us disable the notifications. The new API is just more control from Apple, yes the third party devs will update and enable it, but it’s no different than Apple changing the API for files last OS release and forcing Dropbox to remove features, and trying to give priority to iCloud Drive. I’m all for Apple promoting and encouraging users to use their own features and software, but give a user the option to turn it off.

Edit: another area where Apple is handicapping the OS is with their Virtualization. They will let you run no more than 2 macOS VMs concurrently even if your Apple Silicon has the cores and memory to run more.

I love macOS been using it since macOS 6. But I’m not going to pretend like control isn’t being exerted on their OS in ways they previously haven’t.

The fact that, as I read it, Apple is in the sixth beta with Sonoma and proffered and rumored API's aren't apparently yet known to the developer—that's an old and well trodden path for a variety of utilities in the past and has never led to a wonderful place for a developer.

Read it from where? Have you looked at any of the documentation on the Apple Developer site?

I might o' thought developer would have looked at such documentation. But perhaps not. The developer does not appear to be aware of any and you seem to be confident you have critical insight. Perhaps you could inform all parties. This is software I no longer have loaded, and do not wish to make this discussion into a small, annoying hobby. But I am a bit of a tease, just the same.

What I love about this is that Apple thinks I need to know, but doesn't give me the option to say "Yeah, duh, poindexter, thanks for pointing it out Captain Obvious" and letting me turn it off. I get notifying someone of it, but letting me click "Stop Showing Me This, I am perfectly fine with it" instead of "Bartender is capturing your screen".

DUHHHHHHHHH, I installed it.

Its rather funny reading through some of these post on this topic..

News Flash: Bartender has for some time, required the "Screen Recording/Capture" permission.. You had to give it such permissions when installing it... However MacOS just never displayed any icon to indicate an app was doing this until recent.. So maybe actually pay attention to the permissions you grant an app, before just clicking yes..

that's pretty condescending. the OS's behavior changed in sonoma in regards to this, it's not something people are 'suddenly' doing wrong. as you yourself point out, the OS never displayed this icon until recently.

anyway, bartender 4 is fine here on both my macs, and i am NOT seeing the icon on the RC.

First thing I tried of course, As expected, if you didn’t grant screen recording permission the app didn’t work.

Bartender 5 is out and is now optimized for Sonoma. There's also an option to periodically display a notification in the menu bar (if you like). Bartender's core functionality remains the same, meaning it still and always needed the screen recording/capture permission. Existing paid users can upgrade to v5 for EUR 9. Hope this helps! :)

And for info it's now out on SetApp...
I had to remove it in SetApp but not fully uninstall it to force update it to version 5. The screen sharing icon was driving me nuts. I thought bartender was recording my screen. I could not hide it or turn it off. I love SetApp. So, it is worth the yearly subscription. It was a free upgrade.
