Given that new info, will that make it a good buy now in 2018? ~$1500
Well, its still old tech, but if its the "current" entry level 6 core model that originally launched at $4000, then at $1500 it might be worth (carefully) considering.
If I wanted a headless desktop system and wasn't overly fussed about cutting-edge performance, given the current lack of a viable Mac Mini option, then I might be tempted. However, quick checklist:
- you already have one or more displays that you like, or the iMac 5k display isn't what you want, and that is a priority for you
- you have/plan to get an external storage solution, so the 256GB internal storage will just be a systems/applications drive
- You don't see a need for Thunderbolt 3/USB-C in the next few years (personally, although I wouldn't want a computer with just USB-C/TB3, I wouldn't want a new computer with no USB-C/TB3 for the future).
- you're running software that can take advantage of more CPU cores and/or multiple GPUs via OpenCL
- if you need more than 16GB RAM, you've found out how much a third-party RAM upgrade will cost
- You understand that the current higher-end iMacs give this a run for its money benchmark-wise (depending on which figure you pick) and if Apple do shortly release iMacs with the new 6-core i7 CPUs, they'll leave it standing.
