Base model M4 MacBook Pro comes with 16GB RAM

I wonder if this does anything for the 16”’s base spec. Currently 12-core CPU, also 512Gb, 18Gb RAM.
I saw on that user's X profile that they posted a box of the M3 MBP well before it launched. I recognize the username as well. It very well could be legit.
A much needed upgrade to the base model (and surprisingly, not just RAM but storage too), long overdue! I guess it was Apple Intelligence requirements that really pushed Apple over the edge this year.

Finally… finally! I could finally consider getting a base model!
However, even if it starts at 512/16, it’s likely I’ll get an upgraded 1TB/24 or even 1TB/32 model… maybe the M4 Pro models start with that configuration, which would be a really sweet deal (if priced reasonably)

I’m guessing the 8GB Apple apologists take no issue with this change?
Assuming that the photo is legit, it doesn't necessarily prove that 16GB will be the base configuration, just that there is a model with the 16/512 combination. With that being said, the MAC address listed on the box is part of a block of addresses registered to Apple on March 8 of this year.
Please be true. Please be true. Please be true... And please be 16GB across the board for all base M4 Macs (MBA/Mac Mini, etc). Also if we could get 24GB+ on the base M4 Pro (and more ram on the binned M4 Max ) that'd be great too.
And now the “why doesn’t Apple start at 32GB” complaints will start. “16 GB is a joke for a pro device.”
If Apple keeps 8GB in the base M4 iMac, they can call it “iMac - Grandma Edition”.

Honestly, I'm not really seeing the point of being able to run local LLMs so far.
I have lots of reasons why I prefer more RAM but AI is not (yet) one. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe because I'm old(ish for the tech world).
Right now using remotely run LLMs seem to be more capable, more convenient and cheaper (considering the hardware requirements) and when we reach the point where the AI bubble bursts and they don't want to (or can't) pay or all these cloud servers doing the hard work anymore, then "AI" or rather LLMs will have passed its highest point anyway I guess.
By “base model” in the thread title I assume you mean base configuration since the entry MacBook Pro has had 16GB available for awhile, in which case I’m wondering, how do you know this is a picture of the base configuration?
Wait, you think there are people who think 8GB will/should be base configuration forever?
They don´t build their mac for "you". They build it for the PR department.
Then, it´s the PR department telling the people what exactly they need to have. And that IS certainly AI !
Oh well, lets see what the pricetag will be for those 16GB ? .....i do not trust there anything, Exept that Tim "i can make you a car" Cook needs to make money for that next bigger project.

I have no issue with a laptop having or starting at 16gb ram (or more). I simply don't agree with the notion that a MacBook is crippled simply because it comes with less ram, or that Apple somehow has to include more ram for free (especially when there is always the option of paying for more ram at the time of purchase).
For all we know, Apple simply removed the starting 8gb ram / 256gb storage option, and the default model is the exact same price as if you had specced out an equivalent model in the App Store today. In this context, consumers aren't really any better or worse off, in that they are still paying the same prices at the end of the day.
Yeah, exactly. I could also see them keeping the Air/Mini at 8GB and only upping the Pro.

Yeah, the person who did that doesn’t have a background in graphic design. Could be based on something they saw, but that doesn’t look real to me.

I'd really hope that the new M4 Macs, especially anything with "pro" on the label, will drag themselves into 2019 and offer 16GB base, but whether this image is fake or real, it doesn't prove anything.
...there's already a standard config (i.e. one of the main choices on the product page) of the 14" M3 MBP with 16GB/1TB and a 16GB/512GB config of the M3 MacBook Air. That was new with the M3. It's not the base spec, though, and the cost of getting the "better" or "best" version is much the same as getting the BTO upgrades on the base model.
8/512 would make sense as a base MBP spec, but it's also quite feasible that Apple would offer 8/512, 16/512 and 16/1TB instead of the current 8/512 8/1TB, 16/1TB (still nickel and dime-in on RAM and SSD - but what's new?)
I don't think anybody has been saying that the Mac should start at 32GB, but if the increase doesn't ripple up the range so that the more expensive $1999+ "stock" MBP models get at least 24GB then, yes, the complaints will, quite justifiably, start.
Of course they'll object! They'll object! 8 Gb is a lot. They secretly dream of 4 Gb of memory, but are afraid to talk about it ))))
