I’m getting a spinning wheel right next to the WiFi icon on the status bar. It’s making my phone run hot. What is this?

Yeah Apple needs to sort it out. For some reason doing an OTA update messes something up in the software that causes issues. That’s when you get lag/stuttering and bad battery life. Until they fix it, the best thing we can do is restore and set it up as new.
I’m not going to restore and set it up as new AGAIN. Will update via iTunes when 11.0.3 is released.

I skipped the iPhone 7 but it seems the battery life on my iPhone 8 Plus is the best I've ever had on a smartphone. As for my iPad I haven't noticed any difference, but I have been running the iOS 11 beta since it came out.

iPhone 7 Plus. 2 hours on standby: down to 81% :O

If I start actually using it..it's insane.

Saturday evening: left from home at 19:00 with it fully charged (100%). took 3 pics, send a few messages on FB messenger. 22:30, battery down to 45%

I'm really disappointed with Apple... They either do this on purpose or they are just being careless with their updates.
(not to mention the design laziness of their latest products).

My 6s seems to be pretty much the same, maybe slightly worse but nothing stands out. I didn’t do a full restore or anything like that.

I get that a clean install is the best way to go, but it’s pretty unrealistic to expect all users to go through the trouble of doing that. Ultimately it is on Apple to provide a product that works well. The reason I’m an Apple user is because Apple product “just works”. As a consumer I shouldn’t be told that “you need to do this this and that if you want your product to work”.
Marketing is a hell of a thing.

Same problem here. Played a track from spotify over bluetooth and the phone got really hot. 1 hour later i used the GPS for 5min and the phone got really hot again. Worked perfectly fine in iOS 10. Currenly using the iOS 11 beta 1 and the problem still exists. I dont get the audio bugs anymore though. The one were the volume control stops working after a while.

Users are saying no matter what we do this isn't fixing the battery drain, only mitigating the problem.

I believe this affects ALL DEVICES and it's a bug inherent to iOS 11. And only God knows how they are going to solve this issue...

Meaning that after we update from iOS 10 to 11 if we didn't change anything AT ALL in our settings, then the battery drain should have remained the same. So the only thing we can do AT THIS MOMENT is continue using iOS 10. I can't do a downgrade and have chosen to remain in iOS 11 in the hopes Apple will release a fix in the future.

I use an iPAD Pro 9.7 (128 GB wifi only).

Still, I wonder if Safari isn't wasting more battery than it should, in the last 7 days it has wasted as much battery (25%) as nPlayer Plus (32%). In the last 24 hours, 37 / 27.

Well, I fixed ONE major thing by reading 100’s of threads and finding one that was a little obscure.

This one poster had same issue as me. His usage and standby time mirrored each other after the lastest update.

He went to work and it persisted. Tried everything. Wiped the phone, started over, etc. Nothing worked.

Then he noticed that when he went to work, he shut his laptop off because the project he was working on didn’t require it. For some reason, when he checked his phone about 2 hours later, suddenly, the standby and usage time were now working properly.

Didn’t make sense. But he realized that it had to be something related to computer. So digging, he did have some sort of Apple Sync software and then an OLDER version of iTunes. He decided to remove both of these items, left laptop on, and looked an hour later.

And THAT was what was happening.

So I went to my SurfaceBook, checked, and sure enough, I had a sync software and older version of ITunes. I too removed it from the my laptop, and for good measure, I also did a hard reboot of my IPad Pro.

Now, my battery life is improved and my usage and standby times are back to normal.

Best guess is the latest version of ios doens’t Play nice with other machines but who knows. I just know I tried that and crazy enough, it worked.

This is why I feel as though Apple designs the next version of their OS to cause performance issues on older models in order to get you to want to buy the new one.

I have had iOS 11.0 and 11.0.1 on my two iPads (restored for other reasons to 10.3.3) and 11, 11.0.1 and 11.0.2 on my iPhone 7. I did not get into any heroics with settings and I have not experienced a change in battery life with any of the three. I 'get it' that there are users for whom the upgrade has been a battery disaster, but it's not universal.

Check what’s switched on under your location settings

When i had my 6 running iOS i found that turning off the App Store location setting restored battery life back to normal. I switched off a few others as well but the App Store one seemed to be the main culprit

On my 8 i can easily get a day and half of usage, even pushing two days without trying :)

After about a week the battery life on my 6S Plus did improve, but only slightly and it never came even close to what it was prior to the upgrade. However, I have to own responsibility for not maintaining a viable back up for iOS 10, I should've known better and I didn't want to start over from scratch. Eventually, I just gave in and got the 8 Plus and have no issues now.

You are correct. It is a business strategy and does make sense in business view to get revenue and profit for business continuity and shareholders’ benefit.

What I can say with certainty is that before the upgrade I never had the need to recharge during the day, and now my iPAD goes down to 20, 30% in the middle of the time usually wasted in a single day using the device.

Definitely this can only be fixed by Apple in a future update, it's pointless to say "do this", "do that". It won't work.

And perhaps the users who say this hasn't affected them are not using their devices enough to notice the huge drain in battery.

P.S. BTW, Apple has not replied yet to my bug report, I sent 2 logs asked by them, about the battery issues. And it's been over a week. Since it's open that means they are still investigating.

My 7 Plus stared getting hot and loosing battery life like crazy. Apple Support was no help and after some googling I reset all settings, which sorted it. Still slightly worst battery life it seems though.

iPhone 6s: I get 4 hours of usage. Background app refresh and location services are disabled for most of the apps and the same as I had in iOS 10.

A 20-minute walk using Maps to navigate drains the battery by 20%. Actually, just opening Maps eats 5% of the battery.

I just erased my iPhone and did a clean install without restoring from the backup (set it up as new). I installed only the bare minimum of apps that I normally use. I really hope to see some improvements.

Ok, after a clean install (as described here http://wccftech.com/clean-install-ios-11-final/ ) and setting up as new (without restoring from a backup), my battery usage improved by about 90 minutes - 2 hours. It’s still somewhat worse than what I had on iOS 10, but definitely a noticeable improvement.

EDIT: And I spoke too soon: after only a couple of cycles, battery drain again became a huge issue. I had to erase and go back to iOS 10.3.3.

My 8+ is good, but my 7 battery is pretty bad. Hopefully future iOS updates remedy the battery issue.

Resetting network settings after a IOS update always helps battery life. Apple employ told me and it’s helped me with every phone and updates last 3 years

Bad battery drain? Hmm. I'm still on 10.3.3, but I noticed people could deactivate background app refresh completely or individually. That should help a bit. I'm sure using safari would a lot more. Anyone using safari a lot?

Ugh, this is the first time in years I'm considering a clean install just to get back some battery life--it's horrid!

Has a less involved restore from backup ever legitimately fixed anything? Might that be a first stab?

Why do you upgrade so early?

My 7 is still on 10.3.3 and my 6s is on 9.3.5. Both run fast and with full battery life.

Network Settings refreshed, thanks for the hint!

Background App Refresh is always off on my phones.

Yeah, should always wait for a stable more mature iOS version.

Apologies for some of the more emotional answers, being told the obvious though doesn't help much when you're anal about proper computing devices maintenance...

Out of 98 votes so far 65 votes observe a diminished battery life, that's two thirds of the votes given.

I'm positive Apple finds the bugs.

This is a very interesting point, that Apple has some built-in depreciation in older models.

Take the camera, all of a sudden my wife's 6 Plus takes photos of quite lower quality, without changing any settings...
