Hi all,

Beach Holiday coming up! ?

Not a swimmer at all. I will be mostly looking after our patch, reading, surfing web etc. and eating ice cream :p

I have taken Kindle and iPhone to beach in past, no problems.
Can I extend this to the iPad? or even the MacBook Air M1?! Be nice to use them on holiday when I finally have time on my hands.

I'm going to pop this question in both the iPad and Mac sections of this forum. It will be interesting to see the replies ?

We won't be near the sea and do not have a hoard of young wet kids running around. With covid, we will have wind breaker posts to mark distance away from other families etc.

2020 got my 1st iPad 12.9 - awesome screen! great for my old eyes.
2021 got my 1st MacBook Air, M1.
I have apple care on both and are using for personal use only. My attitude is not to be too precious about them and just use them as much as possible in the real world. Amazing portable tech!

RE: Ipad
I am a bit concerned with sand etc getting under the keys and into the ports, and sound grills.
Or sand scratching the screen? Its never been a problem with the iPhone or kindle etc.

Wait, I don't have a screen protector on the iPad, so thinking about it, so is that a complete no no for reading on the beach? Or am I being over cautious?

So, trying to use apple tech in the real world, if I leave the magic keyboard at home and put an ESR sleave on the iPad, will that work?

Hope you can advise.
Be great to hear how people have got on, using their apple gadgets out in the wild! :D

Regards.
Martin.

Hello again Cupcakes,

Long time no chat, how are you? Hope you and your family are well :)

Yes, as I was typing away the question, it did seem less and less likely for the mba.

Great to hear the iPad is a possibility. Yet another example of the additional uses of an iPad, to complement but not replace the mba and vice versa.

Out of time - I'll leave the post on the Mac area - be interesting the derision etc. that may be coming my way, by just asking an honest question ?

Night cupcakes, take care ?

Martin.

Agree, doesn’t sand scratch glass easily? Imagine if sand gets in the charging port ????

iPad does deserve a holiday from time to time, but the beach isn’t the ideal destination ?
Sand would be a nightmare.

Marty (after consulting with the missus) could get an Otterbox Defender case and scour Swappa or eBay for a used iPad mini on the cheap. That would give great protection and if something happened, it wouldn't be a very big loss.

Last time I was at the beach I had my iPad Mini5 with me and that was fine -- but then again I didn't actually take it out on to the sand, I used it a few times on the boardwalk to text/message back-and-forth with friends so that we could coordinate where on the boardwalk we were going to meet up. None of my electronic devices goes out on the beach itself with me -- they stay in the nice cool A/C hotel room, safe from frying in the hot sun heat and humidity, safe from sand and salty air creeping into their ports......

The only technology I can trust myself taking with me to the beach is my Apple Watch. I lock the keys to my car in the car with the Apple Watch, and now I don't have to worry about losing anything to thieves, short of someone taking the whole car.

We go to the beach for week-long holidays. I use my iPad Pro indoors and on the deck. (I like to draw and it also is great for serving up shows or movies while eating dinner).

But on the actual beach? I ONLY use my Kindle and my Watch. The Kindle is water resistant and works great in sunlight and I can listen to audiobooks on either Kindle or Watch. I’d never take my iPad or my phone onto the sand.

I agree sand in ports= no more charging .say good bye.?
You guys are hilarious. Sure, you don’t want sand in ports… but it’s not gonna hurt anything. I work outdoors and have even ended up in the water with the iPhone in my pocket. Definitely had sand come out of the ports without a problem. You just don’t want to be shoving the lightning connector in there while it’s dirty.

Again, I wouldn’t recommend this… and I wouldn’t take an iPad to the beach just out of principle, but a phone is supposed to be with you. No problem with it at a beach.

Sometimes I wonder what lives people live that they don’t get a little dirt or sand in their pockets now and again… - which is no different than having a phone at the beach.

Just don’t dig a moat around your sand castle with the bottom on your iPhone…

OP, leave the iPad at the hotel. Enjoy the sun and surroundings, but don’t do that out of fear for the iPad or your iPhone. You asked. My opinion.

I'd bring either my laptop or ipad to the beach holiday but I'd use them only in the hotel. I'd use it in the beach or poolside if I don't plan to swim coz it might get stolen. I'd rather bring my phone coz with a good waterproof case, I can go to the water with it.

Phone makes much more sense. Mine has always overheated though since I typically only care to be on the beach if it’s hot and sunny…
