I have latest version updated and on an SSD.

It is really frustrating as I am trying to do my thesis this year.. any ideas or do I just have to wait for update, i have no other idea what it could be.. is this a problem others have experienced?

Mac model? RAM installed? When did you update to El Capitan? Using Time Machine? What peripherals are connected? Issue in what app(s)?
4gb ram. Update from Yosemite, Issues happen in every app, lagging text and beachball.

Yes, my questions too. However regardless of your answers and barring any hardware problems I would suggest running OnyX (for your operating system, it is OS specific) available here; http://www.titanium.free.fr/onyx.html
Initially it will run a verification program, dont worry if this takes a long time. After that run the Maintenance script with all the boxes ticked.

Installed fine, but it hopped in dock and said not responding.

Edit: Finally worked, I did that as you asked.

That 'hopping' may indicate low RAM. Did you have the problem before upgrading to El Capitan?

As for the beach balls, there could be a hardware failure too. You should first verify that the drive is okay. Reboot into the recovery system by pressing command + r after the tone. Use the First Aid function of Disk Utility on your hard drive as well as your Macintosh HD partition.

If there was nothing, you should do a hardware check by rebooting and pressing the D key after the tone. You can find some more information here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201257.

Tried that

  1. Both disks completed ok after command+r and First Aid
  2. Tried clicking D numerous times on start up but still have not received anything. (I will try again but is there another way, is there reason D won't work when I hold it before gray screen appears.

I suppose your SSD isn't anywhere near being full because you know that will cause the system to crawl.

Test a new User Account. If that is also slow I'd advise a TM backup and new install with restore from the backup.

See whether one of these things apply to you: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH14291?locale=en_GB.

You may also want to download EtreCheck and do a report. Then post it here with the [code] tag. This should give as an indication as to which processes are running and may be disrupting your performance.

No, I have SSD with about 40GB left.
Also my ram is usually in around 1.80 used and 2.20gb free.

I have since done a complete format on the second drive and moved all the files(this was the the plan in the first place. To use the SSD for just applications)

Is it possible do an fresh OS update/install.. while still keeping applications?
Or is this possible at all?

I have macbook from late 2011, and El Capitan installed.. so none of these seem to apply to me.

@Patrick-32: In that case you should use the install DVD that came with your Mac. Just insert the DVD and press D upon reboot.

The report indeed suggests that you are running out of RAM occasionally, so there may indeed be a few bottlenecks. You are also running quite a lot of background processes, as shown by the Launch Agents, Launch Demons and User Launch Agents sections (see below). Anti-malware applications are also known causes of system slowdowns, depending on what they are doing and you are using ESET Cyber Security. It's difficult to say whether these are causing your Mac to slow down though.

Did you buy the Mac with the SSD? If not, you may want to turn on TRIM as well, which is now natively supported for third-party SSDs. All you have to do is enter the following command into a Terminal window. This could also be a reason why your Mac is performing slower than it should, when your SSD doesn't have enough pristine pages to write to.
Code:
sudo trimforce enable

I'd say you should create a complete system backup with Time Machine first. You already have an external drive, so you should use it (you can partition it with Disk Utility if you want). Then you have several options. You could indeed reinstall your system and go for a clean install and import just your applications and documents again with the Migration Assistant. Then you can slowly build up your system again and prevent unnecessary bottlenecks.

I don't have an install CD.
Also I checked if SSD and it does support TRIM, it is less than a year old.
I have only installed ESET after it has ben acting like this.
I am ordering 8GB ram from crucial now and should have it by Monday or Tuesday.

My plan at the moment is this, let me know what you think..

I want to do a clean install of
Partition my 500GB which i replaced optical drive with.
Backup the SSD Drive to this new partition with Time Machine.
Restart machine, command +r and Reinstall.
Use Migration Assistant. (is this in time machine yes)

Would this be the correct procedure.

Edit: When try use time machine it says cannot open preference pane.
I checked system pref > get info to uncheck 32bit mode and its not checked.

You should enable TRIM then. Your disk is fairly small, so this is quite important if your drive is filling up constantly. When you perform a clean install, you have to re-enable it again afterwards. Installing more RAM is definitely a good idea.

Yes, that would indeed be the correct procedure with Time Machine. Migration Assistant is not part of Time Machine itself, but after the installation of OS X is finished, you are offered to migrate your data.

For a clean install, you need to erase your SSD. Reinstalling OS X will not wipe your drive otherwise. I'd recommend you create a bootable USB thumb drive with your El Capitan installer and then just perform the erase from there. Instructions are here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201372

Edit: When try use time machine it says cannot open preference pane.
I checked system pref > get info to uncheck 32bit mode and its not checked.

This is really weird. Can you post a screenshot of this?

Sorry I meant DOES NOT support TRIM.

Strangely enough on the 6th or 7th try of trying top open Time Machine. it allowed me to do so after making this post.
I clicked time machine and backup disk but it I'm backing up onto the same disk.. (I'm selecting 300gb free on the hd) How can it be same disk. It's like its only allowing me back up the other partition of the disk and not showing the SSD?

You are not selecting the disk you back up, but the disk that you are using as a backup disk. Time Machine will only back up the partition on which your Mac is installed, which is on your SSD.

I have SSD in main drive space and I have hard disk in a caddy where the optical drive was..
When I go to time machine. It only shows me options for the Hard disk drive.. the two partition. When i select one it says one partition it says, it is on the same drive.
The two partition on the hard disk are name parition1 and Untitled.

It does not mention the SSD device that mac is installed on.

The volume “Untitled” you have chosen for storing backups is on the same device as the volume “PARTITON1” which is being backed up.

To fully protect your data, you should back up to a volume on a different device.

I'll try it anyway and get back to you. It seems to be backing up 128gb size of SSD but it strange it said the above (bold) Is it because i have the disk not attached as external USB maybe

Does the external disk have the correct volume? Should be HFS+/Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Looking at that Etrecheck report, you have a LOT of third party utilities and launch items running there. Try holding the shift key at startup to boot to safe mode. Safe mode bypasses all startup and launch items so will eliminate that as the issue. If it works fine in safe mode, that tells you it has to be one of those launch items in the Etrecheck report causing this.

Another idea I have not seen mentioned yet it a and drive cable can cause these exact symptoms. Do you have a USB enclosure you can pop the SSD in and option key boot to that to test. If the problem goes away in the enclosure, then you know you have a bad internal drive cable.

Tried using USB enclosure and still the same.

Is there a way to stop all them programs from being in launch when they are not being used. Why are they in there if program is not open or being used.

A safe mode boot will stop them from launching at least during that boot so you can tell if that is the issue. Have you tried a safe mode boot to see if that fixes it?

These are all utilities you have installed somewhere along the way.

Yes safe mode seems fine..

Okay then... if a safe mode boot fixes it that proves it is one of the launch or startup items causing this. The only way to figure out which one it is is by removing them and restarting each time until you find the culprit.

What I would do is print out the Etrecheck report and use that as a checklist to document what you have done. Just drag each item off the the Desktop so you can put then back later if you need to. I would remove half at a time then restart to narrow it down.

They will all be either in the login items section of your account in Users & Groups, or in one of the following folders. The Etrecheck report shows which folder it is in.

~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems

On your last question, many of these launch item type utilities require that launch item to run. So you won't normally be able to only run the launch item when you want to use the utility. Once you find the one causing the problem, your options are either stop using the utility or see if the developer has a newer version that fixes the problem.

Thanks for reply.
What do you mean drag them off desktop? Drag the plist files from 4 folders you mentioned off to desktop? Is this what you mean..

Yeah I have already checked login section and only have two things I use always in there. So that's ok..
