Hey guys,

I was really pleased to login to MR earlier to see Beejive App had been released. Beejive was my personal fav web IM before the birth of the App store.

I was a little shocked to see the $15.99 price tag but some of the features were a little too tempting for me not to buy it.

I know $15.99 is a lot of money to some and so I wanted to write a little walk-through/review of the app to help you make up your mind.

http://www.mmcforums.net/news/beejive-im-review-for-iphone/

I hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or on the review itself.

Also I'd love to read your impressions too.

Paul

Nice review and I pretty much agree with you 100%.. I actually posted my mini-review earlier (Not as in-depth as yours though)

One thing - you might want to modify the pictures of your Buddy list to take out the peoples email addresses.. Claire looks cute - she might start to get some unwanted IM's from strangers now! LOL

I rarely IM, so this isn't on my 'to-buy' list. But if I did IM a lot, this program looks fantastic. I would certainly say it's worth the price to those who will actually make use of all its features.

Palringo works perfectly with my msn and yahoo. It has voice, picture and text. I don't see the benefit of paying $15 for something I get for free?

Good point, I knew I'd forgot to do something. I'll update that a little later. I have square eyes at the moment from staring at my screen.

I guess a plus point about the premium price point, is that it's not likely to be downloaded by the masses and therefore less chance of the servers going down. We definitely don't want another repeat of "Chat". Now that was a waste of money. I never did manage to login properly :D

Palringo is awesome. I just love Beejives improved interface, stay connected, push messages etc. All features I desperately wanted. Beejive is extremely well polished, you'd never know it's a first version release.

But for some, who won't use the extra features Beejive offers, it may not be worth the price tag.

The thing with voice and pictures is that you still need to have a Palringo account (as does the person you're leaving voice or pictures for) - its a great workaround, but its not like it does that directly from within Yahoo, AIM, MSN, etc..

no, they don't...
I send recorded voice all the time, as I am too lazy to type sometimes, nobody ever told me that they needed an account with palringo to play.....

If they don't have a Palringo account, they're sent a link to the image or voice note. Not really ideal but hey it's a decent work around.

so you need a mobileme account to have your messages recieved when you exit out. doesnt seem worth it to me

and w/ palringo they share your info.

ill just wait till something better comes

No. You can use any email account. If you use mobileme, which is Push, you receive the notification instantly.

If you want push but don't have mobileme, then use Yahoos push email.

You don't NEED it, it'll work with any mail account - its just faster with MobileMe or Exchange

"and w/ palringo they share your info."
No, they don't. It was an error from an earlier version they've since addressed the problem and fixed it and apologized for the mistake.

OP, thanks for that in depth review. Very good stuff in there!

I'll probably end up buying this once the Push Notification service is implemented by Apple. Then I can justify the cost by not having to run any kind of IM app at all on my computer and just use the phone for it. Makes more sense -- it's a lot like texting.

Excellent review. I have beejive for my blackberry and find it's an exellent program for staying connected to my AIM and Yahoo accounts.

Looks like they did a fantastic job with the iPhone version! And it's cheaper than the blackberry version too.

I crumbled and purchased it already. :)

However, I can't log in to AIM!

I checked 5 times on iChat that my password is what I think it is, and I am typing it in correctly -- it just keeps reporting my user name or password is not right but it is!

Anyone else experience this??

The plot thickens -- I can't log in to the AIM website with my user name/password anymore it seems. What the hell is going on here? Why would it work in iChat on my computer, AIM on the iPhone, and NOWHERE else?

That's strange. You could try contacting AOL?

I didn't try AIM, I used my mobileme account though.

I'll try adding my AIM later and see if it works. Maybe AIM are having issues.

I thought on buying it for an hour, before I did, and I am glad I did now. not only does it work, but it has a nice interface, something that palringo and mobilechat only had one of each.

Do you think other chat apps like AIM will come out with updates that allow users to be logged in for 24hrs as well? Will they step up their game to compete? Or just let Beejive kill everything!

Yup, at slightly more than half the price, it's a total steal.

I must say that I love this app. It's nice to have a proper IM app on my phone... I remember using beejive on my blackberry a few years ago so it's nice to have it again.

One problem, maybe some others are having this. If you're involved in a chat with someone, when you try to enter the chat from the 'Chat' or 'Favorites' tab, do you get a black screen?
If I tap the contacts name from the 'Buddies List' icon, it's fine.. but if it's from the other two I jsut get a black screen (menu bar with contact name, icon and arrow back to prev screen is there). If i click on the contact info and then go back to the chat it works but thats it

Yea it's a known bug, they are working on it cause it's listed already here. Other than that this app is phenomenal for it's first release.

Bought it. AOL's AIM application has consistently crashed on me since it launched (I have a lot of buddies, that might be part of the problem), so it's good to have a more stable IM client on my phone. Great review -- your text & the screenshots pushed me over the edge to buy.
