Posted this today: "Crazy Fast GPUs for Mac Pro: GeForce GTX Titan and 780" http://barefeats.com/gputitan.html

Includes test results for OctaneRender, After Effects CC (Ray-traced 3D), LuxMark, Diablo III, Civilization V, and Heaven 4.

Twelve GPUs compared.
 
It's amazing how the Mac 7950 performs so badly in most of the tests, even in the gaming ones. It's saving grace is OpenCL at least.

I wonder if they'll still Mac GPUs after the nMP launches.

The HD7950 is not the competition to the GTX 780, the HD7970 is. HD7950 competes against the GTX 770.

Also, the Titan competes against the HD7990 or HD7970 GHz Edition.

The 7950 seems to fail against the GTX680/770 as well. In general it looks like the worse card to buy, and this forum seems to be riddled with people constantly having issues.
It could all be down to drivers, but it's overall performance outside of OpenCL looks bad.

It is not a great card. I think the HD7970 is the HD4970 of this generation.
 
I can't say I've used the 7970, but from tests it certainly looks good bang for buck.

Personally I've tended to gravitate towards NVIDIA since my 4870X2, and the fact that they also support a host of cards in OS X through native OS X drivers and from themselves.

With Apple switching to AMD workstation cards, I do wonder if the drivers issues with the 7950 won't be ironed out. It vastly under performs in OS X compared to windows.
 
I ended up with a slightly higher Unigine Heaven 4.0 Benchmark than BareFeats with my 780GTX that just arrived today, using what should be identical settings, save for OS X 10.8.5.

OctaneRender Benchmark, Render Target PT - 99 Seconds vs BareFeat's 110 for the 780GTX and 95 for the Titan

From initial testing, it's a stable, solid card. Putting my 680GTX up for sale soon...

I take it you're using the native OS X drivers?

I didn't see NIVIDA release a support 10.8.5 version just yet.
 
Well, that's pretty much convinced me on getting a 780. Will probably hit up MacVidCards for one soon.

So when modded it runs perfectly on a Mac Pro with internal power only, no issues at all even during full load (well, maybe excluding Furmark, of course)....

I've run Furmark with no issues. And have been gaming in Windows.

Great writeup. Time to start saving up for a 780. I'm not sure the Titan is worth the extra dough.
 
Personally I'd start saving for a GTX780, but I'm a bit cautious as the new 8XXX cards from NIVIDA and AMD are on the horizon.

There are no guarantees that either Next gen cards from Nvidia and AMD will be either released for the Mac or can be modified to work on the Mac. No reason to necessarily hold off right now with the performance these cards offer right now and I see that you're running a 120 from your signature..seems you've been holding off for a while. ;)

In OpenGL 7950 isn't a competition to 680/770 either. And 7970 GHz isn't as well.
780 FTW, best all-around performance topper for its money.

All quite true, although I'm sure OS X and NVIDIA will have drivers for the 8xx cards.

Been holding off for far too long haha. I have a GTX 660 I'll be putting in once my PCIe cabling arrives. That should last me a while longer. :)

Good call. The 660/ti is likely the best bang for the buck right now.
 
If anything a Mac modded 7xx series should keep a lot of resale value should you decide to upgrade to an 8xx.

Is that a 780GTX with (2 x 6 pin power) or (1 x 6 pin, 1 x 8 pin) ??
 
I need to upgrade the video card in my new used mac pro. Kind of want the 780gtx but don't know if I want to spend 899. I actually just want something cheap that is decent.:eek:
