It is fairly likely that MacVidCards has modified the firmware to keep the power consumption within the 2x6-pin restriction. You could always just ask him how the power management is configured.

that's a little scary ... A lot of people are going to use the on-board mobo ports.
The 780GTX uses about the same power as a 570GTX. I'm running it off motherboard power with no issues. The GPUs are -not- underclocked. Only the Titan needs external power. I imagine if you overclocked the 780GTX, it would as well, but at stock speeds with turbo boost 2.0 locked at 80C, it's fine.
I thought we had this debate before
We assume 75 off the mobo and 75W per plug, for a total of 225 watts. The TPD of this card is 231.
It's probably fine, but over time you could be slowly burning up your tracers, until they finally sever.
MacVidCards is the expert, I'll defer to him.
MacVidCards said:I am going to start the thread with a comparison of GTX780 with GTX570 2.5GB. The GTX570 is a well loved card that many use in their MP. I do not know of ANYONE reporting power issues with them, whether EFI flashed or running using the self0 initing drivers. I ran a bunch of recent Nvidia cards through the After Effects benchmark on this board and found that the GTX570 is equal to the new GTX680 for that test.
I also decided to use that render as one of my test points for power draw.
GTX570 AE render 161 Watts
GTX570 Furmark 250 Watts
GTX780 AE render 169 Watts
GTX780 Furmark 230 Watts
MacVidCards said:There is no reason to believe that Apple DESIGNED in the ability to handle 150 watts into each of those 6 pin connectors and their traces that lead back to the PSU. Yes, it may work for awhile, but it is not solid thinking to expect it to keep working into the future.
Either buy a card with Dual 6 pin plugs, or get an external PSU. GPU manufacturers don't put 8 pin plugs on cards just to look cool. They do it because the card draws more current than a 6 pin can reliably transmit over the long term.
This is off-topic, but how did you make your MP display as Mid 2013?

Thanks very much for sharing, very cool.http://www.tonymacx86.com/customization/79536-mod-about-mac-10-8-a.html#post493203
You can pretty much make it say whatever you want. I just changed the graphic and the subheading.
The HD7950 is not the competition to the GTX 780, the HD7970 is. HD7950 competes against the GTX 770.
Also, the Titan competes against the HD7990 or HD7970 GHz Edition.
