Why dual cameras?

Because Apple has run out of ideas and the only non-software thing they can effectively improve upon is the stupid camera.

The iPhone 6 takes amazing snapshots. No one is going to give up a Nikon DSLR for a smartphone so Apple can stop this silly quest now.

Yeah because I'm so going to carry around a DSLR all the time. And forget Nikon, Canon is way better.

I for one like camera improvements. Makes my life easier so I don't have to lug around a large and heavy camera.

Apple needs a visionary who can think of impossible things for the engineers to invent. Then the visionary can work it to get the kinks out. And turn it into art.

I really hope not. 3D has been and gone, it didn't get popular then, why now? Though that's very Apple. It's been done before, but we're going to do it better!

My friend has a dual camera LG phone. One camera is normal view, the other is extreme wide angle.

He's been having a lot of fun taking creative photos with it. It could be that Apple is thinking to do the same.

Remember how things used to be done "back in the day" and we laugh at it now because we have advancements in tech? That's how I feel about dual camera/lenses and it's not even released (on the iPhone) yet.

I'm sure it will be great but man it feels hokey to me right now.

I really hope it doesn't have anything to do with 3D. I don't know why but I dislike everything that's 3D just short of reality. I think a lot of people feel the same, Samsung even dropped it from their high end TVs...good riddance.

Seems like Apple applied a patent in 2010.

Apple exploring 3D display with transparent OLED

A patent application filed by Apple shows a method for creating three-dimensional depth in a display by using transparent OLED panels in a multilayer construction.

Apple: 3D with transparent OLEDs
Apple’s patent application was filed in January 2010 and describes how three-dimensional depth is created with transparent OLED panels stacked on top of each other.

Apple’s multi-layer 3D OLED display

Because transparent OLED panels require no backlight (traditional OLED panels neither) each panel can show images to the user, creating an illusion of depth. This method does not require 3D glasses but each OLED panel requires a separate graphic driver.

Apple’s patent could allow screens like this one from the Avatar movie

Apple states in the patent application that they believe current stereoscopic displays are not practical for personal use, simply because they require 3D glasses. The patent application is mostly centered on 3D navigation, and not for example 3D movie watching.

Apple’s multi-layer 3D OLED display

The multi-layer display can be used for 3D menus and Apple has showed interest in a 3D user interface for their Mac OS X in the past. Another example is application windows in layers where the active application is lit up and in focus and the inactive ones are displayed on the second or third OLED screen in the multi-layer construction, and therefore perceived as being “further away” from the user.

The patent application is named “Multilayer Display Device”.

This technology is being implemented now.

Visteon Multi-Layer Display Cluster Concept

These PR people need to move the camera a little more to capture the 3D effect.

I have seen lots of reports, but as of yet seen anything about the optical zoom of the iPhone 7 Plus. I expect it to be a modest zoom, however the thing that really confuses me is that there is a zoom at all since one lens is one focal length and the other lens is another fixed focal length...so how do they obtain a continuous optical zoom?

Any other general or specific comments about the dual camera-lens system are welcomed.

Other than speed of operation and focus, the two big limitations of phone cameras are: lack of shallow depth of field, and lack of optical telephoto ability.

So, I'm hoping for something like the "Brenizer Effect", for the DOF issue at least.

https://fstoppers.com/post-production/brenizer-effect-fantastic-examples-5696

Essentially shoot a series of wide open aperture f/1.7 shots, then stitch them them together to make a much wider frame, and an apparently much shallower depth of field than any one lens could get. Not sure how the dual cameras would help this, but it's neat.

Here(-ish)
what do you guys think the benefit of having a dual lens camera with 2 lenses possibly be on the upcoming iPhone Plus 7 or on the IPhone 7 "Pro"?

It surely is a rumor but if it is true, what benefit could it add to taking photos with a dual lens camera?
Depth of field. Focal points. In one word, "bokeh."

When Apple demonstrated the technology behind the depth of field, as being layered (depth map) and using new inventions, I believe the next iPhone will be stereo view and the selling point will be no glasses needed to see the screen to get the Baby Boomers to buy.
The Technology is explained at mark 13:43
I believe the Retina Screen may be a OLED.

I have to say i am very impressed with what apple achieved with the new iPhone 7 plus dual camera, great work indeed by the engineering team.
