Highlights include the lack of a full-sized USB port and any kind of real sleep mode that means it can't even last 8 hours of inactivity (no hibernate because the drive is too small?)

What sort of Windows install is this? I tried a 64GB Surface and after installing Office, all Windows updates, and a couple gigs of OneDrive data there was 15GB free. This device must have literally zero additional space.

Sometimes cheap isn't really much of a bargain at all.

For iDevices maybe, and then only barely. This machine is pretty decent for the price, but that 1GB hurts it badly. It'll work alright for Metro apps, but it'll start swapping pretty badly once you have even a modest amount of desktops apps open.

I feel kinda bad shooting it down, because Blazed is obviously pretty stoked about getting it. But it's true. 1GB isn't NEARLY enough.
I have an 8" Insignia Flex Windows tab. 32-bit Windows 8.1, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage. Solidly built (metal housing), $99.

I've been running desktop apps on it (as well as some ancient Win16 programs) and performance has not been an issue. The swapping it does isn't dragging the system down (probably a result of the speed of the solid-state storage).

These things aren't meant to be desktop replacements. Having a half-dozen apps open should be fine.

I'm curious to hear from people who own a Windows tablet with 1GB RAM and what their usage experience is. Looking at the raw specs is one thing, in actual use is often another.

Doesn't this design cause a problem whereby the top-heaviness (all components in display, virtually nothing in keyboard) causes it to topple backwards after the screen is angled from the vertical by a relatively small amount?

This was my experience when trying a similarly designed 2-in-1 (Acer Switch 10), and I found it very irritating. When on my lap I had to actively press down on keyboard to stop the thing toppling backward.

Not a problem on this one. The hinge is VERY strong and takes some force to open and close and it seems they put a little extra weight in the keyboard just for the sake of balancing it out so its not top heavy. They thought it through.

Bingo! My main computer is a MacBook air. This is a secondary beater computer. Do I REALLY need it? No.

So long as it is working out for you then great. Just use it constantly before the return period to monitor. The most recent Walmart reviews are not good at all.

As I posted in another thread I've been using the winBook TW700 7 inch tablet with windows 8.1 with bing. It has 16gb hard drive and 1gb of ram. I did a somewhat stressful test on it. I hooked it up to 1080p display and ran both the tablet and Dell display. I streamed a video in the plex app on half of the Dell monitor and the other half I had a browser and then on the tablet I opened another browser. It was nearly maxed out on ram, but I didn't get any slowdowns. 1gb seems to be enough for doing some basic tasks. Best part, I only paid 35 dollars for it.

The reviews for the Lenovo are horrible. No shortage of bad reviews for the ASUS either. I guess all brands in this category have their lemons.

I can't find ONE Windows laptop at any price that gets consistently good reviews. I was going to buy the Yoga 2 as I thought it was a decent mid-range device from a quality manufacturer; but reviews of WiFi card issues, battery issues and fan noise put me right off. I find that the upper-mid range products get just as many poor reviews as the cheap Atom and Pentium stuff. Either there are a ton of lemons out there, users can't operate them correctly, or most laptops are junk....

Asus are supposedly a good brand, as are Lenovo, but all the machines get bad reviews. What the heck are you supposed to buy??? #

I thought that Windows 8 needed a minimum of 2GB just to get out of bed?

The one with the best customer service record. Unfortunately Nextbook doesn't seem to have a good track record with customer service based on reviews. I really don't know what to do, because in its present state I'm loving this cheapo tablet.

I thought so too. Apparently not!!

Honestly I disagree with the review's criticism of the performance. They're treating this like a desktop replacement which it's not meant to be. I bought a micro-usb converter for $4 to install software from a thumb drive. Also, the review criticized the dedicated charging port instead of using the micro-usb port for charging. That criticism is a bit ridiculous being that there is only 1 USB port so using it for charging would be kind of annoying if you want to use any USB devices at the same time. This way you can continue the USB port while the tablet is charging.

It's "Windows 8.1 with Bing". Interesting article about it here. As for your second question, I installed all the updates plus Office 2010 and I have 12GB left. Not bad at all. Only thing that ticks me off is it's advertised as 32GB but the total storage you actually get is 24GB. So the Windows install and Office only take up 12GB together.

You did your homework pretty much so like I said if it is working out for you then great.

I think the Surface RT units have Bing as the default search engine.

Only thing I'm concerned about now is that since is runs full Windows and not a mobile OS, there's no real "reset to factory settings" option. How would I go about wiping this thing if I were to return it?

The geek squad reset it when I returned the Surface 3 which was overkill for me. Maybe it can be reset from the desktop settings, I do not remember seeing the option on the metro side.

Do a restore via the partition. This isn't a Windows feature, there will be some manufacturer software onboard to achieve this.

Is the display IPS?

Yes and it is quite nice to tell the truth. I fooled with it at WalMart on display a little while ago and decided to pick it up as it impressed me enough. What the heck, for the price and return policy I figured why not.

When did you get yours? Walmart's return policy is pretty "meh". Only 15 days.

Bestbuy has the unbranded Windows tablet keyboard bundle. Good reviews and 1 year warranty that you can redeem at best buy without having to ship it to the manufacturer. And 2GB ram. I might have to return the nextbook to walmart and get this. It's on sale for $209 now.

EDIT: Before anyone had a chance to reply to this, I bought it. For a measly $30 more I get a much more usable warranty and 2GB of RAM. Plus a prettier design. Back to Walmart for the nextbook.

I got it this morning and will continue to fool with it till the game.

Just went through my usual things so far and I can see why you were impressed by it. I did not tax it though, might for the heck of it to see how it reacts but so far with what I did I cannot complain.

If it had 2GB I wouldn't even bother returning it and getting the Unbranded one from best buy. I would take my chances with the quality. However, for $209 you get more ram and a better warranty and that's the sale price right now, it's usually $279. Seems like a no brainer upgrade for only $30. Something for you to consider while the Unbranded is still on sale and you're within your Walmart return period on the nextbook.

Surface tablets are pretty expensive, and I think you have to get a keyboard separately. I'm sure there are less expensive alternatives to it with similar specs.

iBlazed is right Natzoo. If you're looking for something that replaces your iPad but not your laptop, the SP3 may not be the best device. It is expensive and you do need to buy the type cover separately.

I use my SP3 in place of my laptop. Its a great product, but you're spending around 1,500 (depending on the configuration and ascessories) That's a little steep for an iPad replacement imo

Thoughts on the BB purchase?

Received the tablet today. It's definitely a better tablet overall than the nextbook. More ram, better design, lighter. Also has a better keyboard with a more responsive trackpad and an extra full sized USB port. However, the nextbook had a great screen, better than the Unbranded tablet. Small tradeoff for me. This is a much better value and it has a 1 year warranty that can be serviced at a Best Buy store since its their brand, so I have some peace of mind. Definitely a better deal.
