Any recommendations for a 1TB external HD?

Im looking for a HD thats going to last long and is quiet and small as possible.
Also trying to figure out if I need FW800 or USB2.0 only for backups with TM

It depends on 3 factors: size of your daily changes (C), your patience factor (P), your wallet size (W). You need to figure out the happy balance between those 3.

My wallet size is between 50-100 euros and I'm going to work with Logic when I recieve my iMac. I'm also going to work with iMovie and Photoshop. But sometimes I just listen to music and browse the internet.

The main factor is that it needs to be quiet. So i'm still looking at 2,5" and 3,5" drives.

How big would you estimate your daily changes to be? I assume Logic, photoshop and iMovie are all for "home use"? Considering your wallet size, I haven't seen a fw800 drive for less than £100. I think a USB drive would be adequate for your backup needs.

I bought a Seagate 2 TB external at Costco for $99 earlier this year. Not sure if they still have it at that price. I currently have it connected to my Time Capsule and use it for Time Machine.

Your needs only require USB 2.

I cant really think of anyone that needs more. TM is every hour. Even if you added 10 gigs an hour (thats a lot) of changes/updates via USB 2 might take 6 minutes -- and that happens in the background and you dont see it. Starts at 10, done by 10:06.

G tech uses Hitachi drives, probably this one (IF its a 7200 rpm one), $179 at newegg. So you are paying $180 for the case.

Lot more to it than just the case, I can assure you there is an interface board with electronics as well.

In the past I have used Western Digital Mybooks and have had interface failures. The drives would randomly " Improperly Eject " themselves.

We tore them apart and to remove the physical drive and installed it into a Mac Pro to do some aggressive Read/Write testing. The drives were fine, the interface in the WD Mybook is what failed. In a multi I/O ( Firewire and USB ) the Firewire died, but the USB as OK. I have also used a Thermaltake dual drive adapter, where you pop in the drives. It did OK but was not Firewire.

Yeah, sure you can buy the drives cheaper, however up to this point I have NEVER had a G-Drive fail on me, wish I could say the same for Western Digital and Seagate ... but I can't.

Are you talking about this one? Why is it better than, say, a Western Digital drive? Whose drives are they using?

Yes that is the one. They use Hitachi.

I use them because they have proven to be more reliable and I am not talking about the HDD itself, problems I have had with the likes of Western Digital was failure of the interface. I have removed HDD's from failed WD Mybooks and the drives were fine.

Yeah G-Drives are a bit more expensive, but for me I find the reliability they offer worth the cost.
